Is there a way I can type a command and see how much battery life I have?
My battery meter shows 0% even though I can unplug it and have the battery working with no problem. I just don't have a way to fix this problem so I want to know how I can check the battery level when I unplug it.

Rough: cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state
If nothing appears, your kernel (acpi part) might lack support for your hardware.
Some acpi tools may show battery info from command-line :-) (ask http://freshmeat/ for instance).

or on older laptops (like mine) -
cat /proc/apm
which produces:
1.16ac 1.2 0x03 0x01 0x00 0x01 97% -1 ?
The 97% is the battery charge.
