OK! I selected the appropriate configuration options and my (GQ ZX-5361) laptop now hibernates. And didn't have to use a command line.
There is one problem- I have a dual boot machine and if I hibernate FC6, I can't get back to Windows XP because Grub doesn't pause to allow me to choose the other boot option. Is there a config option to make it do that? I need to hibernate FC6 so I can boot into Windows, do something, then come back to where I was in FC6.

I found it. just hit the arrow key quickly. when the Grub screen is going by without the normal delay. At least I got in once. I don't know yet if it will be easy to hit it every time.

In the /boot/grub/grub.conf file there's a couple of parameters you might want to play with:
timeout=5 hiddenmenu
You can increase the timeout (in seconds), so the menu stays up a bit longer. And you can comment out the hiddenmenu option, so the full menu appears straight away.

The default (5 seconds) that it waits when starting after a normal shutdown is plenty of time. But after hibernating, it doesn't wait 5 seconds. I suppose if I change 5 seconds to 15 seconds, it might wait longer, but it doesn't seem likely. I tried turning off "hiddenmenu", which allowed me to see a brief flash of the Grub menu just now.

There is a "pause" command in the GRUB info file (it provides more details than the man file).
info grub
Navigate to the "commands" section, then the "menu" (commands) sub-section, and read the "pause" page.

This is just an idea, I'm not sure how feasible/appropriate it is. You can have the Windows boot loader as default and call Grub from it.
