Hi,
having big problems with the new thunderbird-3.1.1-1: After exiting a running thunderbird-3.1.1-1 and starting it again, nothing happens: No error message or something similar. Logging out or restart does not help. I had to downgrade thunderbird for getting it to run again.
Somebody has similar problems?

check your profile directory, /home/username/.thunderbird/*.default/, for a file 'lock'.
if there delete it and try again.
if not there, from a terminal, enter
thunderbird
press <enter>, watch for error message.
if none and does not open, enter
thunderbird -safe-mode
to see if it will start. this is a 'safe mode' which disables extensions.
watch for error message.
if starts:
1] in menu bar;
tools > error console > all
look at errors for help. if any, post back.
2] if it starts, in menu bar, select 'tools > add-ons' to open 'add-on' window.
highlight 'extensions', click 'find updates' button at bottom, apply any updates.
3] if it starts, then on menu bar, select 'tools > add-ons' to open 'add-on' window.
disable _all_ add-on, close thunderbird, try to start from desktop.
if thunderbird starts, open 'add-on window' again, enable 1/2 of your add-ons, close window, close thunderbird.
try to start from desktop. if starts, open add-on window again, enable 1/2 remaining extensions, close 'add-on window', close thunderbird, try to open from desktop again.
repeat until thunderbird will not start from desktop.
when thunderbird does not start, open in 'safe mode' from terminal, as above, open 'add-on' window, disable last 1/2 that you enabled, close window, close thunderbird.
open thunderbird from desktop, open 'add-on' window, enable 1 add-ons in failed group, close 'add-on' window, close thunderbird.
open from desktop and repeat above until you find bad/incompatible add-on.
leave this add-on disabled until updated version is available.
also, see;
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Updating_extensions
in addition, you can enter your add-on names at;
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/
to check to see if they are compatible for your version.

My situation may not match yours... But, I am running F11 and I've downloaded the TB 3.1.1-1 from the Mozilla site and am running it just fine. You didn't mention....did you try starting TB from the command line?

Hi g,
I can't say it exactly, but it must have been one of these:
CompactHeader 1.2.3 Enigmail 1.1.2 Lightning 1.0b2pre (installed by Fedora rpm thunderbird-lightning) Mail Redirect 0.7.4 Provider for Google Calendar 0.7pre ThunderBrowse 3.3.1 ViewAbout 2.0
I'm sorry, but I disabled all these in one step, and then enabled each extension stepwise (each time after enabling one extension, thunderbird did run flawless). So I can't report which of these was the culprit.
Kind regards

Hi g,
I checked all again, and I have to correct myself:
I saw that I had not enabled *Mail Redirect*: Now after enabling it, I had exactly the same problem as I reported in my first posting. Disabling *Mail Redirect* helped me, so it was the culprit.
Sorry for inconvenience.

Curious too: playing a little bit with Mail Redirect 0.7.4 (enable/disable/enable/...): Sometimes thunderbird will start, sometimes not (even with mailredirect-0.7.4-tb3-20100708.xpi).
Kind regards

ok. checking;
Mail Redirect 0.7.4 https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/550/
it shows "Works with Thunderbird 0.7 - 2.0.0.*", so, therein lies reason for your problem.
yet,
mozdev.org - mailredirect: index http://mailredirect.mozdev.org/
states;
Thunderbird 3.x support
Click to download the Mail Redirect Extension 0.7.4 for Thunderbird 3.x.
which points to;
http://downloads.mozdev.org/mailredirect/mailredirect-0.7.4-tb3-20100708.xpi
also on page,
mozdev.org - mailredirect: index http://mailredirect.mozdev.org/
there is mention of a bug, tho, not related to your problem;
Bug 12916 - Allow bounce/redirect of mail messages https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12916
so, maybe, if you remove version you have installed and install above, you will recover use.
if it does not, at least you know what to do. :)
Sorry for inconvenience.
not an inconvenience, just one more bit of knowledge. ;)

even more interesting. same version as in my last post.
jfthot, i would still try removing and re-installing after a close and reboot to insure all is cleared.
if you had this installed in a previous thunderbird version and upgraded to present, that may/could/might be cause of problem. never know when dealing with add-on/extensions. [ at least that is what she said. ;0 ]

FYI, if you try to install that version of Mail Redirect on TB3 it will not install. It will tell you it is incompatible. Also, if you have that version installed and upgrade from TB2 to TB3 the add-on will be disabled until you upgrade to the version that supports TB3.

Hi Ed,
the problem exists *not with the 2.0.0* version but with *mailredirect-0.7.4-tb3-20100708.xpi* , available from http://downloads.mozdev.org/mailredirect/mailredirect-0.7.4-tb3-20100708.xpi.

Yes, I got that. My FYI was just a general one since it seemed that "g" may have been suggesting it possible to run the older version on TB3. Just dotting the "i"s and crossing the "t"s. And being annoyingly pedantic. :-) :-)

no. i was suggesting latest release, which he later stated he has.
maybe i lost you with all those links. :)
few annoy me. i consider source. (gbwg)
later. i need to crash.
Oh... I was wondering if starting tbird from the command line with strace may yield some clue....

no problem. our emails are passing in ether space.
Curious enough: sometimes thunderbird starts, sometimes not (even if disabling/enabling several times).
then there may well be a bug still lurking.
start checking 'error console' to see if anything shows up.
later.
!CRASH!

It wasn't the links...just the words surrounding them. :-)
I suppose the phrase "shows "Works with Thunderbird 0.7 - 2.0.0.*", so, therein lies reason for your problem." means something different to me. :-)

I should have mentioned that you probably would have to do "strace -f" so the child processes are also traced.

wherein is problem as above links to;
mail_redirect-0.7.4-mz+tb.xpi
you missed my usage of word 'therein' and missed understanding my following with;
}> yet,

all of which was before Joachim states his using above, and i was going on a presumption that he may have been using older version of 'mail redirect' from an install of an earlier version of thunderbird that he upgraded.
so, no, i was not inferring that he use older version of 'mail redirect'.
are we clear now? :)
