Boot from the Fedora 4 Rescue CD. It should mount your system without trouble at /mnt/sysimage. At the rescue CD prompt:
# chroot /mnt/sysimage # vi /etc/fstab
and fix the entry for root. Then "exit" or control-D twice to exit from the shells, remove the rescue CD, and you should be fine. I've resized LVM's from the FC4 rescue CD so I know it works with them.

Use FC4 CD1 or DVD and boot into rescue mode. It will detect the LVM automatically. I do not really understand what your problem is, but booted into rescue mode you can edit the fstab.
