Hello,
I did an upgrade using:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Upgrading_Fedora_using_yum#Fedora_17_-.3E_Fedo...
and it was generally smooth and successful, which generally made me ecstatic, until the two issues (from what I can tell up to now) came up:
1. Sound is gone. I have looked around all over, but am unable to figure out what the problem is.
2. SELinux: My SELinux claims it is disabled. Here is what happens when I try to change it:
$sudo setenforce 1 [sudo] password for: setenforce: SELinux is disabled
There are a couple of minor issues, but I think these major ones are most important to me at this point.
Any help/suggestions?
Many thanks and best wishes, Ranjan

Have you checked to see if the pulseaudio daemon is running? It's possible your desktop environment isn't starting it as part of the session startup.
- SELinux: My SELinux claims it is disabled. Here is what happens when

$sudo setenforce 1 [sudo] password for: setenforce: SELinux is disabled
Check the /etc/selinux/config file and see if you have it disabled there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- - Rick Stevens, Systems Engineer, AllDigital ricks@alldigital.com - - AIM/Skype: therps2 ICQ: 22643734 Yahoo: origrps2 - - - - NEWS FLASH! I don't quite know how to check this, (sorry!) but when I do this:
$ pulseaudio E: [pulseaudio] pid.c: Daemon already running. E: [pulseaudio] main.c: pa_pid_file_create() failed.
which tells me it is running, right?
Anything else I should check?

Yes, I found this online immediately after sending e-mail and got this working upon reboot....Thanks for this also!!
Best wishes, Ranjan

Yes, it's running. Ok.

Check your volume controls and see if you have them muted. I'm not sure which desktop you're running, but with XFCE, I can left-click the speaker icon in the upper right to bring up the mixer.
Also useful, install pavucontrol, run it and check what it says. If you install it, it'll be under
Applications->Multimedia->PulseAudio Volume Control
(at least it is under XFCE and older versions of Gnome).

I tried pavucontrol, but did not get any messages. Do you need any specific information from this to help?

Did you see the note in the above link to run
su -c 'yum reinstall libvirt-daemon polkit'
if you didn't do the upgrade in permissive mode?
It could be this polkit issue you are seeing.

No, no, I did the upgrade in permissive mode.
Here is a list of what I tried:
sudo semodule -r matahari sudo semodule -B sudo fixfiles restore sudo reboot
After that, I tried
sudo yum reinstall libvirt-daemon polkit
and got
No Match for argument: libvirt-daemon
but the polkit did reinstall.
I then tried reinstalling selinux, and pulseaudio to no avail.
As final shot, I tried reinstalling everything:
sudo yum reinstall *
And all went through, but still no sound. Hence this request for advice.
Funny, I don't see anyone who has reported this problem on F18 in the archives.
Many thanks, Ranjan

If by "this problem" you mean audio problem, then you might have noticed these:

No, I did not, thanks!
For me:

returns

So, I suspect that this is a bit of a different problem?
Anyway, when I do the following:
$lxmusic personal/Music/white_stones/windancer.mp3

I get no sound, but pavucontrol lights up on playback:

Following up on this, I continue to miss sound on this old Dell Precision 650 desktop with a i386 architecture.
Any suggestions as to what I should even be looking at? I am not sure if it is a bug, and if so what I should file against.
Btw, I did check that the speakers are on and connected.
