Why are you trying to play audio CDs as root, for goodness sake?
I have no actual
passion to play CD-s as root, but it has always worked
before. /dev/hdc which is attached to the cdrom has permissions:
brw-rw---- root disk
So if anything it should only be accessible as root. So what sense does
that make?

Sounds like a feature, not a bug to me...
But what are the permissions on the appropriate devices in /dev?
James.
