is there a way to get CD isos of Fedora 7?

I have a workaround to install Fedora 7 if I can get the
isos on CDs. I can only find DVD iso for Fedora 7.

I would think I'm not the only person who uses Fedora
who does not have a DVD reader/burner.

Is it now the policy of the Fedora Project to only
make DVD iso available for download?

You can get ISO image files using the BitTorrent protocol from
http://torrent.fedoraproject.org/ .

here is how you can install Fedora without a DVD player...

Download the FC7 DVD iso.... extract the boot.iso from the DVD iso... (use
your tools of choice)

Create an nfs share on another system and put the FC7 DVD iso in that share.

Burn the boot.iso to a cdrom

boot the system you want to install FC7 on from the cd with the boot.isoimage.

When you are asked how you want to install choose "NFS share"

Enter the ip address and directory name... and voila... network install of
FEDORA and you did not have to expand the ISO to do it.

Pretty cool!

Phil,

Thank you for your excellent advice. However, I cannot
boot from CD, my BIOS only allows me to boot from an
IDE CD-ROM and I have a SCSI CD-ROM.

However, there is another workaround that Conor Daly
sent me when I was trying to install FC 3 and had the
same problem - not being able to boot from CD:
1. copy and rename the following files to /boot
    initrd.img
    vmlinuz
2. modify grub.conf
title Fedora 7 install
         root (hd0,0)
         kernel /vmlinuz-f7-install ro root=/dev/hda3
         initrd /initrd-f7-install.img

I have been exchanging email with John Reiser regarding
this same issue and I might have made a mistake in
grub.conf, I might have to correct it and add "askmethod"
after after vmlinuz:

title Fedora 7 install
         root (hd0,0)
         kernel /vmlinuz-f7-install askmethod
         initrd /initrd-f7-install.img

There are numerous optional installation kernel options, but none are
required. All many do is save minor steps during installation initialization.
Rather than renaming, I put them in their own subdir in /boot, e.g. /boot/f7inst.

In the FWIW department, I do the same thing you mention below except that I start with the
emergency repair disk. It give you to option to install (GUI and text) and I just do the
NFS install from there...it works great!

You can use the option install from HD too, copy the .iso to
certain
folder, eg. /f7 copy the isolinux folder from the .iso to /f7 too, boot
with grub and use the kernel at /f7/isolinux to boot. For detail I'm
already posting about this at another day ;-)

Since my BIOS only allows me to boot from an IDE CD-ROM
and I have a SCSI CD-ROM, I cannot boot a Fedora 7
live CD, I cannot boot from any CD.

The ones I tried do not return any matches.

The query would be for your model of CD-ROM to determine whether it can be a
boot device. Every LSI/SYM875* controller I've encountered can automatically
boot from CD-ROM without any host adapter configuration, but only if the
CD-ROM device is boot capable, and that capability includes understanding the
type used by the CD you wish to boot from.

I googled "LSI Logic / Symbios Logic 53c810 (rev 12)"
nothing regarding being able to boot was returned,
only the bug I see when I boot my system.

That adapter has no BIOS unless installed to a motherboard that includes an
NCR BIOS embedded within the motherboard BIOS (ASUS and a few others used to
do that), but even then only a HD could be booted from it.

http://tinyurl.com/2nzcvg can replace your 53c810 without any reconfiguration
of any kind necessary in Linux. It does have a BIOS that can boot a CD if the
CD device has that capability. There is a probable difference in that its
external connector is 68 pin, while yours if present is probably 50 pin. If
all you have connected is your internal CD that won't matter.

Booting the installation kernel/initrd through Grub right off your HD would
be very much easier than futzing with hardware.

You'll need to know the exact make and model of your SCSI controller,
then visit the vendor's support page and find the users manual.

You should be able to get the info you need from the dmesg command,
from /var/log/messages, or from some magic keypresses during the boot
sequence, which out to show on a splash screen.

Just stating the obvious, but do you get a message flash up while
booting the computer to press some keys to enter a SCSI setup?  Perhaps
before the one for entering the BIOS?

I had that on one of mine, after that it was a case of navigating
through their next set of screens to twiddle settings for different
drives on the bus.

If your SCSI is built into the motherboard, you might want to try
finding a general manual for your motherboard.

When I had the same issue of not being able to boot
from CD-ROM, Conor Daly sent me instructions on
copying the initrd.img and vmlinuz to /boot.
I copied and renamed initrd.img and vmlinuz to /boot
and modified grub.conf to see them:
title Fedora 7 install
         root (hd0,0)
         kernel /vmlinuz-f7-install ro root=/dev/hda3 askmethod
         initrd /initrd-f7-install.img

I will boot my system and select the Fedora 7 install I
just added to grub.conf.
The "askmethod" allows me to choose where the install
is located - I have the dvd iso on an external hard drive.
I also have, thanks to a very generous person, 5 cds of
Fedora 7. So if I can't get the dvd iso to work, I'll
use the 5 cds. I used this method using cds when I
installed FC 3.

If you're only installing to one or a few systems, and it or they already
have some OS installed that has Grub on it, and you have a broadband
connection, you need neither DVD nor CD. Fetch vmlinuz and initrd.img from
the F7 isolinux directory appropriate to your hardware from your favorite
mirror, put them where Grub can find them, and install from the internet. On
a virgin system (no OS installed), find the 7904kb boot.iso image on mirror
and burn and boot that to install from the internet.
