Network printer not working, how to debug?

I just bought a Brother laser all-in-one (MFC-7860DW) after determining 
that it should work fine with Linux. It does wired/wireless and I have 
it connected to my network via wireless.

A mac and a windows machine on the network see the printer and it works 
fine with them.

When I use system-config-printer to try to set up the printer in Fedora 
15 the following happens:

I click the Network Printer dropdown under "Select Device" and the 
printer shows up with the proper IP address. Under "Connection", "IPP 
network printer via DNS-SD" is selected. I choose the driver and apply 
the settings. It prompts to print a test page and I click to print it. 
The job for the test page is submitted and a window with the settings 
shows up and the Printer State shows as "Stopped - Destination printer 
does not exist!". The Device URI is 
"dnssd://Brother%20MFC-7860DW._ipp._tcp.local/".

Not really sure where to go from here.

Try using a different Device URI.  The error you're getting is because
the device URI doesn't include a queue name (because it couldn't be
detected, I suppose).

You may be able to find out the default queue name by visiting the
printer's web server (if it has one built-in), or by consulting the
printer's documentation.

Try using something like:

ipp://192.168.2.101/ipp

replacing the IP address with the correct one for the printer, and
see if that works. It does on F14 for a MFC-7820N using the CUPS driver.

Where you go from there depends on how you want to handle the
printer IP address. I have mine assigned a fixed address by the DHCP
server, though you can probably give it a static IP address in the
printer setup.

There is a way to use the setup you have, but it involves opening up
ports in the firewall, and running the zero-config daemon. (I forget
the name of it.)

FWIW, you might well find that adding "ipp" to the end of the original
dnssd device URI would also work.  If that's the case it would be useful
to know -- perhaps that can be tried automatically.

see if there is another choice other than dnssd URI - perhaps just the
IP address itself. Probably have to return to system-config-printer and
modify it or delete it and create it again.

I look into the printer setup and did not see drivers for a MFC7860DW , 
have you downloaded the drivers from Brother for that printer ?

And be sure to watch for those SeLinux error that popup , fix selinux 
errors as they pop up or you won't get your printer to work.  It is not 
wise to disable SeLinux.  Fedora 15 makes it real easy to fix the SeLinux
errors.

 For cups printing Printers should not be configured on the printer
clients . Only on the server. Without any configuration on the client
you should see the printer as an option when you print.

You say that the correct driver is in the Fedora Printer setup ?
I set my printer printer up as such and it works fine as a network printer;

URL:    lpd://192.168.1.101   (use your own IP)

But during the setup watch carefully for any SeLinux error messages and 
correct those as you go along.
Another tricky thing about Fedora is while your in the Printer Setup it 
will want a root password auth and that windows will be hidden behind 
another larger window where you can't see it, so watch down on the
Panel Bar for windows for root password auth.

As for the scanner some work on Network and some don't, i had to hook a 
USB cable to use the scanner,  be sure xsane is installed.

FWIW, at work we have a Brother all-in-one, though I don't think it's
the one you have (I can't actually remember and I"m not there at the
moment), but using the drivers downloaded from Brother's web site
both printing and scanning work fine. It's hardwired on our network,
not wireless, but I can't think why that would make any difference.

and oh, BTW, at work I'm using Centos-5.6, not Fedora, so that may also
make a difference.

so, if all else fails, you may have better luck with Brother's drivers.
YMMV.
