OK, I'm confused....
On F12 yum info for xorg-x11-server-Xorg shows...
Name : xorg-x11-server-Xorg Version : 1.7.6 Summary : Xorg X server URL : http://www.x.org
When going go http://www.x.org one reads....
The current X.Org release is X11R7.5 http://www.x.org/wiki/Releases/7.5. The next major release will be X11R7.6 http://www.x.org/wiki/Releases/7.6.
How does 1.7.6 compare with 7.5 or 7.6?
I'm asking since the current release of opensuse 11.2 has
Name: xorg-x11-server Version: 7.4-61.63.1
And the problem that I see with the nVidia drivers and compositing doesn't exist on opensuse. I get 3D effects...no problem.

Thanks...and I see.... It didn't dawn on me to read the release notes... :-(
Wonder why the opensuse version works for me...and F12 doesn't....
Weird....

Don't know/think it was meant to work with F12, out of the box. But it does on F13 though. Compiz anyway, dunno bout 3d.

Well...all of this is interesting and at the same time confounding....
I think the breakage occurs in the xorg server. I'm now tempted to try F11 since it has an older version, even in the updates, and it has KDE 4.4. There are things that are nice about opensuse....but I'm more used to the RH way. And besides, opensuse may upgrade their xorg server at some point and I'd still have the problem....
Decisions, decisions.... It is a good thing installing systems doesn't take "forever".... :-)

In short, X.Org != X.Org *server*. The X.Org is "protocol version 11, release 7.5", which contains (among other things) the server, version 1.7.6. The catch is that the actual server executable is also called Xorg. ;-)
$ Xorg -version

I would compare that to opensuse output.

F11 has 1.6 something too.... So, I'll give that a whirl....
