Why not just get a converter for the plugs and buy a normal sound card?
Well, I might guess, because the usual 3.5 mm jacks are crappy, in general, and really crappy on some cards. I was sorely tempted to solder some normal sockets on fly leads to one of my computers.

If you're looking for a pretty high quality sound card look here... http://www.auzentech.com/site/index.php
Although the Dolby Digital Live and DTS connect function does not work, everything else should per their FAQ.
