Is anyone able to offer some help with Skype.
I installed their Linux RPM version and yum'd the dependencies. It works well between Skype users, at least the voice is fine and I can see the other persons video although that's not a feature I would use.
But although it will connect to the "plain old telephone system, I subscribed to that feature," it doesn't provide a usable connection. All I have to test with is my cell phone and only hear weak and broken audio, a call to my brother's answering machine gets dropped before I can say more than a few words leading me to believe it's not hearing me?
To add to the uncertainty my satellite ISP contributes a couple of seconds of latency, there is the delay between here and the satellite and from there to the earth station plus what ever other system delays occur and of course I don't know what effect that might have beyond the obvious human reaction to the delayed response.
Any thoughts on the subject appreciated.

skype-2.1.0.81-fc10.i586 is the most up to date version. There is no version specific to F12. I've been using skype on Linux for a while and I've observed that skype <-> skype calls work just fine even with video. On the other hand skype <-> land line calls are inconsistent. At times I've experienced delays, noise and drop outs, other times it works fine.

skype-2.1.0.81-fc10.i586.rpm was the version I found on their web page. It was designated for Fedora and I took it. I can look for the later version but suspect it will not be much different? I need to try it though.
I have not done any extensive trials but what little I have done has produced results similar to yours or worse. When I speak to my brother I will find out if there was any voice message on their machine ...
AS you said Skype to Skype worked well but I don't know only one person using it despite there being a million users! I have no practical need for Skype but wanted to try it. I am impressed with VOIP, Skype and Echolink both provide good voice communications computer to computer.
Thanks for your observations.

Your welcome. BTW, I have heard that Skype is supposed to be planning an open source release of the client for Linux.

Since you have the skype to skype part working, why not try the PC to phone part with ekiga (or some other FOSS SIP client) instead?
Bob
quick heads up here, i swapped versions a bit too starting out.
i got snarled by the .skype dir remaining that yum didnt remove. installing a second Skype version got real bizarre results.
i finally moved .skype .skype- and reinstalled the cited version, then i got happiness.
YMMV, good luck, jackc...

Yes, I'll try most anything, where would I get the phone connection for Ekiga? I had to subscribe at Skype to get it and so far it doesn't look like it will work ...

Do you mean connection to the normal phone network? Fedora could be used for inbound connections if you are a contributor. See the Fedora talk page.
There are also pools of people that provide access to local calls from their location in exchange for similar help from others. Free World Dial Up is one such group.
Personally, I like twinkle better than ekiga.

I think Ekiga offers you a selection of services to signup, you can choose any of them. I haven't used SIP myself, but I am sure some on this list have. I vaguely recall a discussion about SIP service providers in the past. You might want to check the archives about that.

I found that Ekiga was already installed in this F-12, originally installed from the Omega F12 Live CD, and yes upon starting it it guides you through configuration and obtaining an outgoing telephone connection [for ten Dollars]. I did all this, an involved process but doable. It doesn't work, it acts as though it may be connecting to the "echo test" site but there is no audio to indicate that it is functioning, just a little call completed at the bottom.
I would expect it should work since it was included with this version of Fedora. The other VOIP applications I have tried worked without much effort once installed. Strange!
Obviously I have something wrong. Does anyone else have this working? Have any idea what I should do next?
