Dear All,
Sorry to be late, I was out for holidays.
Thank you all for your kind help. Finally I solved it, but a stupid
MS way. I stopped all processing and restarted the box. After
rebooting the "su" works normally.
I feel shame for such "resolving" (actually it stays unresolved)
but I hadn't time enough to investigate it more.
Thank you so much for your kind effort and help.

Shouldn't it be 770?
Another thing you could check is entries in /var/log/secure. If it is a
pam problem, it should show up there.
$ ls -ld /root
dr-xr-x---. 15 root root 4096 Aug 4 09:36 /root
]$ ls -ld /
dr-xr-xr-x. 18 root root 4096 Aug 2 08:55 /
