Hi;
I have a HP psc 1315 attached to my FC6. I have all upgrades as of this morning. I tried to print a simple *.txt document through gedit and OOo Writer with no response. The job is in the queue; gedit job shows document as 'unknown'; the OOo job shows the proper document name but does not process. Printer is set to go; no flashing warning lights; paper inserted; relatively new ink cartridges. Printed fine a couple of days ago. Printer works in WindowsXP.
Command line printing (~]$ lp '/home/bill/Desktop/Docs/Stuff/BugInstall') fails to print as well. Message: request id is psc_1310_series_-143 (1 file(s)).
What now ??

What is the output from lpq?
Have you checked http://localhost:631 and made sure that the printer is active and not stopped?

Is there, by any chance, a second entry for your printer anywhere under CUPS? My HP2550L always gets listed twice. One of those entries does just exactly what you describe, the other entry prints fine.

Nope. http://localhost:631 says only one printer. Fedora printing gui says only one.

No, I haven't. If that works, then there is a major problem with one of the recent updates (kernel) because I have had to remove and re-install three other programs in the last few days.

Hi Frank;
I was afraid you would ask. I am trying to quit smoking after 50 years. Today is my first full day without. I have been having brain cramps all day. Had to look up what they were.

1) MySql. 2) ClamAV & freshclam 3) Bugzilla -- bugzilla could easily have been my screw up -- but the other two had been working fine until a few days ago. I forget the exact day I installed the latest kernel but within a day of the realease.

Actually, you generally do "install" the kernel (add another one to the box), rather than update (replace the last-latest with the now-latest).
Although you can update a kernel, it's usually a bad idea.

True Tim. But I was trying to indicate that my printer (and maybe other problems) started after installing the latest kernel by yum, NOT after a new install of FC6.

generally, you should install new kernel, reboot, if no problems with a day remove old kernel
However, I don't use RH's over bloated kernels on our desktops, "use the source luke"

I would keep them longer than that. You might not thoroughly test a kernel within just a day or so. And an update to something else, afterwards, might present a problem between it and the new kernel. I think it's always best to keep at least one or two prior kernels.

I guess running NOC's for years has taught me that you have backups for more than one reason. Typically each machine has a kernel source kernel install, the .config is copied into new ksource and re-made, not much can go wrong.
I stopped using RH supplied kernels at around RH4, when a RH update of the kernel _did_ in fact break things... Since then I've rolled my own, and never had a single glitch, and I apply that rule not only to the fedora desktops, but also to every server I manage (none of which run fedora/rh).

Additionally, I found out that configuring the printer manually and setting the HAL entry to not active works for enabling reliable printing. The HAL version of the driver never worked for me. My Device URI shows the below: usb://HP/psc%201200%20series?serial=CN45KG30905H
The entry which does nothing for printing is below: hal:///org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/usb_device_3f0_2f11_CN45KG30905H_if1_printer_CN45KG30905H The description for the HAL printer is below: HP PSC 1400 Foomatic/hpijs
Just adding a comment to add to the two entries posted by an earlier user.

Well the log seems clear enough. There are support files for your printer missing from your hlips installation. So where did they go? You said you did an upgrade. Was hplips upgraded? Personally I am superstitious. I install the HLIPS package from sourceforge if it is still there. This is unrelated but just recently an unintentional update of the NetworkManager related packages stopped wireless from working correctly.

The problem here is that it is looking for a 'psc_1310_series_' entry, when it should be looking for a 'psc_1310_series' entry.
Could you file a bug report please, so that I can diagnose the problem further and get you to try out a fix?

The problem with filing a bug report is that it is no longer a bug. I removed the printer with the Fedora printer installation gui and re-installed. It now works fine.
