Hi all,
I have Fedora core 1 and Windows XP installed on my computer. Within Fedora I would like to use some files from Windows sometimes. How do I make it?
Thank very much,
Li

Depends what you mean. If you just want to access files from your C: drive, then you should be able to mount it if you have the right ntfs modules. If you actually want to run WinXP software under Linux, Wine would work to a certain extent. If you explain a bit more, I can get back to it and help you.
running files is easy when it is mounted, check linux-ntfs.org for details. on the other hand, for using wine www.winehq.net i'm not sure), up to a certain extent it will run some apps, unless that application tries writing to and reading from the windows partition... on the other hand there are commercial versions, one of which is www.codeweavers.com which probably work better than wine.

Hi,
I checked that website and it is great. But before I download something I like to make sure I get the right one. I wonder how I check which kernel is used exactly on my machine from the terminal.
Thanks,
Li

The command "uname -a" minus the quotes, will give you the requested information.

Now I can make it. One more question: How do I umount it after I am done with my files? I typed the command (umount /mnt/win) as root and the terminal says /mnt/win is busy. So what is going on?
Thanks,
Li

--- cd / umount /mnt/win
you can't umount a removable disk if your cwd is on the path.

Thanks for all.

To clarify: /mnt/win is busy means that there is some program running that is "using" something on /mnt/win, either as a current directory, or it has a file open.[1]
You can use the /sbin/fuser command to see which programs are using /mnt/win. It returns the "process ID" of each program, and a character representing how the filesystem is being used. You may need to be root to see all the programs.
For example, $ /sbin/fuser /mnt/win /mnt/win: 3425c $ ps 3425 PID TTY STAT TIME COMMAND 3425 pts/2 Ss 0:00 -bash
So a bash command is using /mnt/win as a current directory, and it's on terminal pts/2 (probably your second terminal window).
See man fuser for more details.
fuser is part of the psmisc RPM.
Hope this helps,
James.
[1] There are a few other possibilities: see man fuser for details.
