I'm afraid this may be a very ignorant question, but how do I access the DVD drive on my desktop?
It is shown by lshal: -------------------------- udi = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/storage_model_DVD_ROM_DRD_841B' block.storage_device = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/storage_model_DVD_ROM_DRD_841B' (string) info.product = 'DVD-ROM DRD-841B' (string) info.udi = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/storage_model_DVD_ROM_DRD_841B' (string) --------------------------
And I see it referenced in /proc/sys/dev/cdrom , from which I guess I should find it at /dev/cdrom . But when I try to mount it, I don't see the CD in it: -------------------------- [root@alfred ~]# mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom mount: No medium found --------------------------
So is this the correct device? How can I tell?

Do "cdrecord --devices".

Use cdrecord -help to get a list of valid options.
Use cdrecord blank=help to get a list of valid blanking options.
Use cdrecord dev=b,t,l driveropts=help -checkdrive to get a list of drive specific options.
Use cdrecord dev=help to get a list of possible SCSI transport specifiers. +++

Interesting. I get something in my F8 box.

Thanks for the suggestion. There was a previous discussion regarding cdroms. Maybe you'll get something there (cited on a recent thread):

Do you have more then one CD/DVD drive? You can see what device /dev/cdrom is a symlink for by running "ls -l /dev/cdrom". If you only have one drive, you may have to clean the drive...

Thanks. I only have one drive. /dev/cdrom is a symlink to /dev/sr0 , but trying to mount this has the same outcome.
I guess the drive needs cleaning, or more. I should perhaps have mentioned that this is an ancient machine - I keep it running because it is the only machine I have with a Centronics printer socket for my HP LaserJet 5L. I'm not sure if I ever used the DVD drive, but certainly not for many years.
I think I have Windows-2000 on it. I'll fire that up and see if it can do any better.
But I was thinking that it was a pity Linux/Fedora does not have something like Windows "My Computer", where one can see at once what devices can be seen. Or maybe there is an equivalent?

A new drive would be fairly cheap, and doesn't have to be permanently put into an older machine. On the other hand, you could do what I did: I bought one of those USB to parallel port adaptors, so I could use my HP LaserJet 4L with my laptop. It's a bit slow, but I didn't have a range of different USB adaptors to try out at the time.

There's a few graphical hardware browser, and there's command line tools like lsusb, lspci, dmesg, etc.

It is shown by lshal:
udi = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/storage_model_DVD_ROM_DRD_841B' block.storage_device = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/storage_model_DVD_ROM_DRD_841B' (string) info.product = 'DVD-ROM DRD-841B' (string) info.udi = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/storage_model_DVD_ROM_DRD_841B' (string)
When I do lshal in my F8 box I get this (way down in the output):
udi = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/storage_model_DVD_ROM_SD_R1312' access_control.file = '/dev/sr0' (string) block.device = '/dev/sr0' (string) linux.device_file = '/dev/sg0' (string)
I'm just curious: do you get any of that?

Yes, I do get that: -------------------------- udi = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/storage_model_DVD_ROM_DRD_841B' access_control.file = '/dev/sr0' (string) access_control.grant_local_session = true (bool) block.device = '/dev/sr0' (string) --------------------------
I did actually know /dev/cdrom was a link to /dev/sr0, but I get the same result when trying to mount the latter: -------------------------- [root@alfred tim]# mount /dev/sr0 /mnt/cdrom mount: No medium found --------------------------
I guess there may be something wrong with the drive. It's rather ancient. I'll try it in another machine.

I'm coming in late on this, but is there a CD (media) in the drive when you try the mount command?

Yes, there was a CD in the drive, in fact it was the Fedora KDE Live CD, which I was trying to boot from.
I tried it in another drive in the same machine, and it did boot from the CD.
So I guess there is something wrong with the drive.
