Hi
A few ages back there was a discussion on setting up a gallery for
Fedora based on community or fan artwork.
http://pygallery.sourceforge.net/ was suggested as one of the Python
based solutions. Not sure if there are others we can take a look. It
would be good to provide a place for the community to submit, rate etc
at http://art.fedoraproject.org. It can provide custom designed and
branded wallpapers, themes, sound themes, GDM/KDM login screen themes,
Icons and so on.

I have been trying to get one started for some time now. Alas, I do
not possess the skills needed to get one up and running. However, I
have talked with Thos...the maintainer of art.gnome.org...and he said
he would try and help whomever decides to take on this task.
I think it would be great to have a place where graphical contributions
from the community can reside and be
viewed/downloaded/ranked/discussed. It would be awesome if someone
with more technical know-how would like to take on this task. I'd like
to help with the organization and layout of the gallery.

You dont have to implement it from scratch. We have settled up on python
as the preferred language in fedoraproject.org. So any of the python
based solutions that we can use or modify to suit our needs is fine.
What we need is a centralized place for the community to submit artwork,
rate them and perhaps include some of the best ones into Fedora Core
itself.

Without trying to seem negative, I'd like to give my initial report on the
gallery aspect. I have searched sourceforge, freshmeat and google: I have
come up with no photogallery projects written in python, let alone one as
versatile as needed.
Currently I see there to be two solutions:
1) Bite the bullet and use an PHP implementation
2) Code implementation from scratch in Python (I can get a fellow Fedora
user and LUG member to help, but can make no promises in regard to time)

The point is, while there are very good python based web applications,
python is much less used than php in this area. I believe you will
face this problem again and again in the future if you strictly
require pyhton based solutions.
That said (I am _not_ against python at all), I saw in the CMS
decision thread a proposal for a zope/plone solution. This has the
advantage of being really flexible, and every possible
extension/application you may think has alreay one or more
implementations.
For example, googling for "zope photo gallery" the first two results are:

Thanks for the link. I was unaware of he zope thread as I just joined the
list. Unfortunately, none of the apps from those links properly fit the
bill, as things like searching, rating, etc. would certainlty be needed. The
project seems is to be more along the line of kde-look.org or
art.gnome.org(I am not sure of these systems have a particular
name/category, please tell
me if they do).

Seems to me that the pygallery is a gallery generator (ie. generates static
files) and is nothing like what is needed (kde-look.org art.gnome.org)

Hey Art, that's cool. The direction to head is in finding the right
direction, so to speak. The main need is for a leader who is willing to
both do the work and guide the effort. There is no one right answer - the
site can become whatever you make it. If you have a clear idea of how the
art site should work, run with it! If not, you can always solicit ideas
from others and then move ahead with implementing them. The only
requirement is a willingness to keep driving things ahead to find the
solutions and implement them.
As far as the technical side of things how much of that do you feel
qualified to take care of? It sounds like pygallery is not "it". If you
find an existing solution to deploy, the Fedora Infrastructure team can
help with deploying it, but if a solution needs to be written from
scratch, that would probably be something that you'd have to do...

direction with pointers that has already been given. You can
participate in the meetings scheduled to come up or discuss those

possible, and have found no script even close to the needed task written in
python. However, I have already contacted a programming buddy of mine, and
we willing to begin writing the necessary app from scratch.
If the general list is ok with this, then I would like suggestions for the
design of the site, etc. And also recommendations of wether we should begin
development on one of our own servers, or if we will be give access to the
fedoraproject.org server at art.fedoraproject.org or similiar.
When exactly is the next meeting planned?

You should begin development on your own servers. Once things are "ready
to go", we can run the site on the fedoraproject.org servers.
Although it's very nice to have, Python is not a hard & fast requirement
for the web site. Do you know of any implementations in other languages of
what you need? If nothing else, they will give you a template to write
python code from :)

I know we haven't settled on Zope for anything, but there is a chance

Well, I had a look to those sites and their organization (with
searching/rating/catagories) seems more the customization of a weblog
rather than a picture gallery.
Searching for this kind of topic you can find (again) many Zope/plone
based solutions, and also stand alone ones.

HTML 4.01, CSS 2.1
On the HTML, though, keep to lower-case tags, properly nest tags, and
close all of the tags that you can. Try to keep entirely separate
stylesheets and avoid inline styles. Make sure you use a proper DTD,
and that the pages can pass validation checks. Also avoid tags and
attributes that are deprecated or unavailable in XHTML standards.
Basically, we want HTML that is ready to become XHTML or can easily be
ported to another markup. If you can meet Section 508 and WAI
accessibility guidelines, that would be great. If you choose an AJAX
solution, make sure it scales backwards to work on older browsers, too.
Using AJAX and DHTML-type solutions would produce a nicer interface, but
we want the site to be as accessible as possible.
PNG, SVG
Try to stick to PNG graphics. Do not use GIF images, and prefer PNG
over JPEG. Obviously, we will want to accept all kinds of
contributions, including vector graphics creations, so make sure you
allow for SVG submissions, and possibly other formats, too. Completely
proprietary formats, such as some of the formats used by Adobe solutions
or Paint Shop Pro, should not be supported. Providing directions for
exporting to more open formats should be easy.
RSS
Although not a requirement, RSS feeds of updates would be nice to have.
Layout
You are free to come up with whatever sort of layout you desire. As
long as it is relatively easy to use and works well, you can do what
feels right to you. We should be able to theme the site to match
coloration and graphical nuances of other Fedora materials, but this
should not restrict the layout.
Alternatively I could
make a couple and we can figure it out from there. But be
forewarned,

close all of the tags that you can. Try to keep entirely separate
stylesheets and avoid inline styles. Make sure you use a proper DTD,
and that the pages can pass validation checks. Also avoid tags and
attributes that are deprecated or unavailable in XHTML standards.
Basically, we want HTML that is ready to become XHTML or can easily be
ported to another markup. If you can meet Section 508 and WAI
accessibility guidelines, that would be great. If you choose an AJAX
solution, make sure it scales backwards to work on older browsers, too.
Using AJAX and DHTML-type solutions would produce a nicer interface, but
we want the site to be as accessible as possible.

handling of the TARGET attribute (not supported in XHTML). Altough I am some
time away from coming to this problem. Any suggestions on how to handle
that?
PNG, SVG
Try to stick to PNG graphics. Do not use GIF images, and prefer PNG
over JPEG. Obviously, we will want to accept all kinds of
contributions, including vector graphics creations, so make sure you
allow for SVG submissions, and possibly other formats, too. Completely
proprietary formats, such as some of the formats used by Adobe solutions
or Paint Shop Pro, should not be supported. Providing directions for
exporting to more open formats should be easy.
RSS
Although not a requirement, RSS feeds of updates would be nice to have.
Layout
You are free to come up with whatever sort of layout you desire. As
long as it is relatively easy to use and works well, you can do what
feels right to you. We should be able to theme the site to match
coloration and graphical nuances of other Fedora materials, but this
should not restrict the layout.

If you follow the guidelines I have laid out above, we should have a
great deal of flexibility in the appearance, so you should be able to
focus on the function of the site and we can hammer out appearance
details as we go.

You have three choices, and I'll leave the choice up to you.

Works well, but can cause problems with the passing of the referring URL

I'd just like to throw my support behind TurboGears
(http://www.turbogears.org/) for this one. Presumably it's going to be
on its own hostname (art.fedoraproject.org?) so there won't be
interference with other web applications.
I could go into a long diatribe about how easy and flexible and etc. TG
is, but I recommend you take a look at it yourself.
The only downside is that it requires a daemon that uses Python, but
OTOH if the machine will be running Zope and/or Python CGI then I can't
really see that being a problem.
Unfortunately I don't have any time to work on it directly myself, but
I'm certainly happy to provide direction for those that do. Also,
#fedora-python now exists on Freenode for those that want more info
about Python et al.
BTW, *amazing* job Diana. Also, do you do [X]HTML or just mock-ups?

Thanks for the Turbo Gear suggestion. I looked at it, and it seems very
interesting
to me. I am just not sure, that I am willing to add this layer
of unfamiliar tech to this project. It seems like something I would look
into personally for future project however.
The project is intended to be written in Python, so in that regard TG would
fit right in.

Thanks. While I do HTML...theses are mockups...just images. My hope is
