Migration to Zanata
by Noriko Mizumoto
Hi Fedora developers
Having the consensus with FESCo [1], we FLP (aka translation team) have
started the process of migration to new fedora.zanata.org instance from
Transifex [2]. First all translators started to migrate in November 2014
(still going on).
Now it is time to migrate all projects. This is expected to start after
F21 GA. For the owners of the projects, there are two options to choose
for the migration below.
One: Delegate us to implement migration
If this option is chosen, partially automated migration will be
performed by Zanata team. Once it completes, then the owner visits new
place and confirms everything intact (Some manual adjustment may be
required).
Two: Manual migration
If this option is chosen, the owner performs all the migration process
by his/her self. Please advise the estimated completion date.
I have attached the list of all the target projects below. If any
package is missing and it should be added into the list, please let me know.
Could all Fedora developers please go through the list and advise which
option is preferred for your project, so that we will be able to
schedule them? For option One, we need to know current
maintainer's/owner's contact.

Open Seat on the Fedora Server Working Group
by Stephen Gallagher
This past week, David Strauss chose to step down from his position on
the Fedora Server Working Group, citing a lack of alignment with his
current work usage. The Fedora Server SIG would like to thank David for
his contributions up to this point and wish him well.
This means that there is currently a vacancy in the Fedora Server
Working Group. The Working Group is the nine-person volunteer body that
oversees the development, testing, release, documentation, marketing and
evangelism of the Fedora Server. Membership on this Working Group is a
moderate commitment requiring a participation of a minimum of two hours
a week, one hour of which being the (usually) weekly meeting.
Membership on the Fedora Server Working Group does not require you to be
a developer, tester or administrator. Anyone who is interested in
advancing any of the Fedora Server's goals[2] is eligible to
self-nominate. Document-writers, translators, Fedora Ambassadors,
end-users and anyone else can become a part of this team.
If you feel that you are interested in becoming more involved with the
Fedora Server, we encourage you to self-nominate by joining the Fedora
Server mailing list[1] and sending a self-introduction and nomination
email to that list. We will have open nominations from now until
Tuesday, December 9th, where we will vote on the new member at the
weekly meeting.
If you self-nominate but aren't selected to serve on the Working Group,
do not fret! The Server SIG is open to all and the Working Group will
always listen to your advice and concerns, so please stick around! While
the Working Group is the final authority and voting body when
disagreements come up or official decisions (like branding) need to be
made, we are not the only people working on the Fedora Server. The
Server SIG is small today, but growing. We would very much like to have
you join us.

Announcing the release of Fedora 21 Beta for ARM aarch64!
by Peter Robinson
The Fedora 21 beta release for the ARM aarch64 platform is here, and - as usual
- is packed with amazing improvements to Fedora, as well as fantastic free and
open source software, gently harvested for your enjoyment. No bits were harmed
in the making of this beta.
What is the Beta Release?
=========================
The beta release is the last important milestone before the
release of Fedora 21. A Beta release is code-complete and bears a
very strong resemblance to the third and final release. Only
critical bug fixes will be pushed as updates up to the general
release of Fedora 21. The final release of Fedora 21 is
[https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/21/Schedule] expected in
early December. Meanwhile, download the beta of Fedora 21 and
help us make it even better:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_file_a_bug_report
Every bug you uncover is a chance to improve the experience for
millions of Fedora users worldwide. Together, we can make Fedora 21
a rock-solid distribution. We have a culture of coordinating new
features and pushing fixes upstream as much as feasible and your
feedback will help improve not only Fedora but Linux and free
software on the whole.
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Staying_close_to_upstream_projects
(See the end of this announcement for more information on how to help.)
Fedora 21 Base
--------------
Each of the products will build on the "base" set of packages for
Fedora. For instance, each product will use the same packages for
the kernel, RPM, Yum, systemd, Anaconda, and so forth.
The Base Working Group develops the standard platform for all Fedora
products, which includes the installer, compose tools, and basic
platform for the other products. The Base set of packages is not a full
product intended for use on its own, but to be kept as a small, stable
platform for other products to build on.
Highlights in the Beta Release
==============================
In this section, we'll look at some of the things that are new or
interesting in the Beta release.
A Note on Shellshocked
----------------------
You've probably read all about the "Shellshocked" vulnerability
in GNU Bash, which affected Fedora 19, 20, and 21 Alpha. Rest
assured that Fedora 21 beta has been patched to close this
vulnerability.
Fedora 21 Server
================
The Fedora Server product is a common base platform that is meant to
run featured application stacks, which are produced, tested, and
distributed by the Server Working Group. Want to use Fedora as a Web
server, file server, database server, or platform for an
Infrastructure-as-a-Service? Fedora 21 Server is for you.
Fedora Server Management Features
=================================
The Fedora Server product introduces new Server management
features aimed at making it easier to install discrete
infrastructure services. The Fedora Server will introduce three
new technologies in Fedora to handle this task, rolekit, Cockpit
and OpenLMI.
Rolekit (https://fedorahosted.org/rolekit) is a Role deployment
and management toolkit that provides a consistent interface to
administrators to install and configure all the packages needed
to implement a specific server role. Rolekit is at an early stage
of development in Fedora 21 Beta.
Cockpit (http://cockpit-project.org/) is a user interface for
configuring and monitoring your server or servers. It is
accessible remotely via a web browser.
OpenLMI (http://www.openlmi.org/) is a remote management system
built atop DMTF-CIM. It can be used for scripting management
functions across many machines as well as querying for
capabilities and monitoring for system events.
*** Release Schedule ***
The full release schedule is available on the Fedora wiki. The
current schedule currently calls for the final release to come
out on December 9th:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/21/Schedule
Dates are subject to change, pending any major bugs or issues
found during the development process.
Issues and Details
-------------------
This is an Beta release. As such, we expect that you may
encounter bugs or missing features. To report issues encountered
during testing, contact the Fedora QA team via the
QA mailing list (test at lists.fedoraproject.org) or in
#fedora-qa on freenode.
For tips on reporting a bug effectively, read "How to file a bug
report:"
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_file_a_bug_report
Thanks much to all the contributors who've helped bring Fedora 21
this far! We're very excited about this release, and we hope that
you'll enjoy it too.

[FREEZE REMINDER] Fedora 21 Final Freeze is tomorrow
by Stephen Gallagher
As the $SUBJECT says, tomorrow we go into the two-week Final Freeze for
Fedora 21. That means that you need to have all of the packages that you
want to see land in Fedora 21 submitted for stable by the end of the day
*today*. After that point, we will initiate the Final Freeze Policy,
where you will need to request a Freeze Exception (or be fixing a
Blocker bug) in order to get changes into the Final release. Anything
else will be deferred to the [updates] repo for release day.

Mass orphan: iarnell
by Pierre-Yves Chibon
Hi all,
Following ticket: https://fedorahosted.org/fesco/ticket/1360 I have just
orphaned all the packages from iarnell on all branches.
During the mass-orphaned we found out a bug in pkgdb making it orphaned all the
branches of the package, not just the ones for which the user is POC.
Unfortunately, this means we have orphaned branches that were maintained by
someone else than Iarnell. If you are in this situation, sorry about that, feel
free to just re-take the branches.
Feel free to visit pkgdb to pick the package(s) you may be interested in.
Best regards,
Pierre

[IMPORTANT] Fedora 21 Schedule Change
by Stephen Gallagher
== tl;dr Version ==
We are accelerating the Fedora 21 schedule so that we will enter Final
Freeze one week earlier than previously described on the schedule
page[1]. This means that all fixes intended for inclusion in the Fedora
21 release must be submitted for the stable repository no later than
November 17th (so that we have time to do the updates push and build the
Release Candidate on November 18th). The Final Release date will remain
at December 9th. This essentially means that we are implementing a
planned two-week Final Freeze instead of the traditional one-week
freeze.
== Why are we doing this? ==
The Fedora 21 cycle has run considerably beyond its original deadline,
primarily due to the massive number of changes that we have been
implementing this time around (in particular, the shift to producing
three top-tier Products has had a significant impact). Because of the
schedule adjustments that took place during the Alpha and Beta phases,
we are now looking at an early December release for Fedora 21.
With the Final Release being so close to the December holidays, any
delay that occurs at this point puts Fedora at real danger of slipping
out of 2014 entirely. To minimize this risk, FESCo has decided (with QA
and rel-eng input), that we are going to make a one-time modification to
our schedule. The historic cause of slips has been that the time between
the start of Freeze and the completion of the release validation has
never left enough room in the schedule to fix any blocker issues that
come up. By moving up the Freeze, we hope to be able to identify these
blockers faster and maintain our curernt planned release date.
We are aware that shortening a schedule puts added strain on our
developers, which is why we generally do not do so except at great
reluctance. However, the Fedora Updates Policy[2] describes the period
between Beta and Final releases thusly: "The branched tree should now be
stabilized and prepared for release. Major changes should be avoided
during this period." So the shorter time-frame should already be
dedicated only to addressing bug-fixes. Most of these can be handled
with a release-day update if needed; those that are truly release-
blocking will remain so (and will be allowed to be built into the
release candidates during the freeze).
