package differences between live cd and install media

Does the live media contains a lesser number of packages(programmes) than
install media since there is signifcant difference in size of both??

Yes,

LiveCd caontains only those packages which are needed to run successfully OS
from CD. A full installation can be found with install media.

Live media is also installable but if you are comparing the non-live
DVD/CD set image with the desktop Live CD, the default package set has
the difference of Openoffice.org which is only available in the former
by default.  Also the non-live image includes development tools,  KDE
etc although those are not installed by default.   Does that answer you?
