Hi,
Last I used ubuntu was when Fedora 11 was released. I faced a lot of
crashes with Fedora and was forced to move to another distro. Ubuntu
was the next best choice because of its easy availability.
One major thing I found when I used it was that it was very stable and
I never saw any crash. It turned out that Ubuntu freezes its version
when it releases its distro. It means that if Ubuntu is initially
shipped with XYZ-1.0 and with a few days XYZ-2.0 is released, they
won't update it unless any major security issue is there. As a result
Ubuntu users do get old stuff at times but that stuff is very well
tested and hence fewer crashes. In Fedora we try to provide users with
latest tools and softwares and at times we pay the price of slightly
unstable release.
This has somewhat been implemented with the updates policy[1] (which has
been around for quite a while now).
Right now I am using Fedora 13 KDE and it crashes a few times but
recovers on its own. Personally I don't see it as a big trouble but I
can imagine that a beginner would not want a bug report on his desktop
very frequently. I am not aware about the state of GNOME desktop.
I hope you've filed relevant bugs? :P
For some reason, I haven't experienced even a single crash this
release :D
In the end it is just about your needs and your guts to experiment.
Personally I believe Fedora is awesome if you want to learn stuff and
want to remain on the top of technology. Who would like to see an
outdated tool sitting peacefully while new versions are released
everyday.
I understand this. I just want to be clear on whether ubuntu is the
"easiest to use" distro, or the "easiest to obtain" distro. Since the
community has seen a sort of shift towards making fedora more usable as
compared to cutting edge as earlier, I would not like it to be the
former.
Thanks,
