Hello!
Although I'm very much a Fedora newbie, I have been using other Linux distros for some time and am OK with the "standard" operations.
However, I have got an FC5 magazine cover disk DVD and want to try Fedora for the first time. I've installed it and initial impressions are very good.
There are some things which I have not come across before, such as YAM, PIRUT, and PUP. I want to find out how to use these packages, how to add repositories to them, and which repositories to add. For example, I understand that I need to add livna in order to install an nvidia driver. (My LCD monitor is off-centre unless I use the nvidia driver, rather than the generic nv one.)
There will be other things I will find which are new to me as well.
Is there a manual on using Fedora which I could download and print out? I would rather do this than keep bombarding the list with basic questions. There is no document included on the DVD.
Thanks for any help.
Keith

...or hit the auto-adjust button? :) livna we can deal with immediately, seeing as you asked. They package their yum setup as an RPM, so install it: rpm -Uvh http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-5.rpm
The nvidia drivers are called kmod-nvidia. You will need to run a system update first as they will not work with the FC5 release kernel.
be careful adding repositories. Some conflict with others. Look at their websites first. Many of them tell you which repos they are designed to work with. Personally I use extras (comes already set up) livna (see above) kde-redhat (I'm a kde-weenie when I am not using fluxbox or similar) oh and the gstreamer-0.10 repos too (just to try them out, really)

not a manual as such, no. however there are some very good online docs. You could print a lot of them off I suppose. Please read the FAQs first and search the archives (or google). After that, on the whole, any questions tend to be welcome here. There are a lot of folk here who will gladly answer you. try these first:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki http://www.fedorafaq.org/ (a little outdated now, still talks about FC4) http://www.fedoraforum.org

Stuart.
Thank you very much for your help. You have given me a good start to get to know Fedora.
I have tried several distributions during the past 12 months, but most of them didn't last long on my hard drive. It looks as though Fedora will last!
The "auto-adjust" button on my monitor works with some distros, and centres the picture. But, there are some with which it doesn't work, and Fedora is one. That's why I would like to install the nvidia driver fairly quickly.
Cheers

Hey Keith, welcome to Fedora!
To install nvidia drivers: # yum install kmod-nvidia

Hello Bart, and thanks for the welcome.
I tried your method of installing the nvidia driver, but it didn't work. I must have done something wrong but, because of my lack of knowledge about Fedora, didn't know what.
For information, I went into text mode and typed yum install kmod-nvidia. I got:
Loading "installonly plugin" Setting up Installation process Setting up repositories core updates extras Reading repository metadata in from local files Parsing package install arguments No match for argument: kmod-nvidia Nothing to do.
I tried editing the xorg.conf file to change the driver from "nv" to "nvidia", but that didn't work.
While typing this post, I have just realised that I hadn't installed the livna repository, so I am wondering if that was the problem.
However, when I did it Stuart's way, installing livna first, it has worked!
I think I have really messed this up, but I am learning fast. :-(
Many thanks again to you both.
Cheers

You haven't messed anything up, just tried to do things out of order. For one: The kmod-nvidia package _is_ in livna, so if you don't have that repository installed, yum can't find it. :) And secondly, without that package installed, putting "nvidia" as the driver name will not work because it refers Xorg to the nvidia binary drivers, which you didn't have installed. No harm done. -Dan

Dan,
Thanks for your reply.
A couple of small points to clarify things.
When I ran "yum install kmod-nvidia" I thought it would possibly run a script which would find the package from a repository and install it. This 'installation by a script' is used in other distributions. Wrong!
When I got those messages, I wondered if the driver was installed, but the xorg.conf file needed editing to change the driver (as is required with other distros I have tried). Wrong again!
Cheers
Keith.

It would have found it if it new where to look. Install the rpm.livna.org rpm as instructed Stuart Sears
wget http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-5.rpm su -c "rpm -ih livna-release-5.rpm" su -c "yum install kmod-nvidia"
You shouldn't have to modify the xorg.conf file - it should do it for you.

I had got the nvidia driver installed by following Stuart's advice. You're right, I didn't have to edit the xorg.conf file, and was explaining to Dan what I had done wrong.
I am very much a Fedora newbie.
