yum apt
by Marek Pawinski
Hi
yum check-update shows you the packages if any that need to be updated.
What is the apt command to do the same ? apt-get -u update does not seem
to do this.

NFS problem
by Robert Spangler
Hello,
My systems
RedHat 9.0 Fedora (Laptop)
Host Client
2 shares
In Fedora's fstab I have defined the shares of the host. They are defined
with the ip address. When I boot the Fedora machine it takes a long time for
the nfs mounts to mount. After everything is up and running if I try to ls
the shares it takes a long time too, and some times I see the following:
nfs: server x.x.x.x not responding, still trying
nfs: server x.x.x.x OK
nfs: server x.x.x.x not responding, still trying
nfs: server x.x.x.x OK
and then the directory is listed.
No both machine I have the following services up and running:
nfs
netfs
nfslock
portmap
network
I have asked on #fedora and was told that it is most likely a DNS issue but
this i don't believe because the host lookup order is to first look in hosts
file which all machines are defined.
Does anyone know of any other place or places I need to look?
Thnx

Metacity
by Bevan C. Bennett
So I've been going around upgrading users from various older RedHat
versions and the number one issue that that bring up seems to be
"metacity won't do what I want it to".
It's been trying to insist that things are better when seemingly simple
GUI functionality isn't there. I understand that there's a desire to
keep the default setting simple in order to avoid the bad old days of
nightmarishly complex configuration files, but are there any plans to
add back some of the functionality that people (especially people who
got used to sawfish) now expect from their window manager?
I'm considering bugzilla-ing a feature request or two in the right
place, but I seem to remember that there may be some artificial or
political restrictions on this issue.
Some of the commonly missed functionality people have bemoaned to me:
* click-to-raise on windows (NOT auto-raise)
* maximize-vertical
* always-on-top for a particular window/app
* scroll to next desktop with mouse motion
* the ability to easily choose an alternate window manager

How to get a USB hard disk to mount on boot
by Villalovos, John L
I've been looking through the email list and I haven't found this out
yet :(
I have a USB Hard disk and it works great. I can mount it easily once
everything is booted up.
The problem is that if I put it in /etc/fstab to be mounted on boot up
the usb modules are not yet loaded into the kernel. So there is no
/dev/sda1 available.
So I am assuming that I need to get usb-storage to be insmod or modprobe
in before the "Mounting local filesystems" part runs.
Can anyone give me a clue on how to do this?
Thanks,
John

FC1 + kernel 2.6.1 + hsf modem on Toshiba Satellite
by toblo
I just add a new kernel 2.6.1 using RPM from arjanv. Everything works
fine except when I tried to install my modem driver. I can't make
install:
The modem is Rockwell International HSF 56k Data/Fax Modem (rev 01).
I tried using hsflinmodem-5.03.27 (It works for the original FC1
2.4.22-1.2115.nptl.
Anybody has success with kernel 2.6.1 and hsf modem?
thanks,

Intel i865 video adapter
by Chris Purcell
I'm running Fedora on a Dell Optiplex SX270. I'm having a problem with
the video adapter (Intel 865) where I can't get it to use any resolution
higher than 640x480. I know that there are known issue's with the Intel
i845 and i865 chipsets, but I was able to get around this problem on the
Optiplex SX260 using the i845 chipset. In the BIOS, I set the video
buffer RAM to 8MB (from 1MB) and it fixed the issue. The SX270 uses the
Intel 865 video card, and the BIOS fix doesn't seem to do anything with
this card. Is there anything else that I can try to get Linux going on the
SX270?
Thanks,
Chris

Evolution, attachments and Sent box
by Leonard den Ottolander
Hi folks,
I just sent a friend a mail with a 2MB attachment. It seems Evolution
stores this attachment with the sent message in the Sent folder.
Although I want to keep this message for archiving I do not need this
2MB blob in my Sent box, as this is data coming from my own computer and
I don't need Evolution to keep backups for this.
Is there a way to get rid of the attachment without deleting the whole
email? Any way to tell Evolution not to store attachments in Sent?
Bye,
Leonard.
