KMail and PgP
by Charles Howse
Hi,
Recently, my email address was hijacked, and used to send a virus to an
address with a .ru domain.
This has sparked my interest in signing my email.
Having used PgP on Windows, my understanding of the way this all works is...
I install the necessary software to digitally sign my email, and upload the
public key to a keyserver.
I then sign my email, and anyone wanting to verify my identity looks up the
public key, assures themselves that it is really me, and then downloads the
key to their keyring.
Persons who are sure that this key belongs to me can sign the key, as well.
Then, persons can then be reasonably sure that email containing my digital
signature actually came from me.
Am I close enough in my understanding?
I found http://kmail.kde.org/kmail-pgpmime-howto.html
Is this the definitive HOWTO for signing email in KMail, or is there a better
reference out there for KMail in FC1?
I'm not opposed to compliing the software as the above page indicates, but I
have a "Personal Desktop" installation of FC1, and wonder if I have the
compiler installed?

ncftp vs. lftp?
by Rodolfo J. Paiz
Hi!
Just fine-tuning some stuff here, and I noticed lftp in Fedora. I've never
used it, but I do know ncftp (also included) pretty well. What makes me
curious is that, when performing a minimal install, lftp is installed and
ncftp is not. I would have to manually replace lftp with ncftp.
Can someone comment on lftp vs. ncftp? Reliability, security, convenience?
Anything?

anyone familiar with k3b in Fedora?
by Dave Stevens
I have a Lite-on DVDRW LDW 411S CD and DVD burner and could not find a working
CD burner in the default set of FC1 packages. I am trying to use k3b. The
user interface is very nice, but for some perverse reason it doesn't actually
write anything on the CD. I am trying to make a copy of some music and have
tried burning an audio cd from ripped mp3s and no joy.
ideas?

Preferences wont stay (esp. German keyboard layout)
by Thomas
Hi again,
I used redhat-config-keyboard to select the german keyboard layout.
Thats fine. The trouble is, every time I restart x, the setting is gone,
and I cant type characters like the pipe '|' or '<' and '>'. If I fire
up redhat-config-keyboard, the german keyboard appears selected. If I
simply hit ok in the dialog, the keyboard woks. After the next restart,
the keyboard layout seems to be gone until I startup the
redhat-config-keyboard again.
Some friends of mine have exactly the same problem with the german
keyboard layout, so it seems to be a general issue. Still, i couldnt
find any help for this on the web.
I run KDE, if i start gnome-control-center and apply a theme for the
Gnome programs, it seems to be exactly the same behavoir. The theme is
applied at once, but after the next restart the setting is gone.
Any help on that?
Thanx,
Thomas

MIDI with C-Media 8738?
by Björn Persson
I can't find a way to play MIDI music through the built-in "sound card" on
my motherboard. Playmidi tries to use /dev/sequencer (and so does Kmid on
the rare occasions when it doesn't segfault). /dev/sequencer exists as a
device file (device 14, 1), but trying to open it produces the message "No
such device".
I found the following in /etc/sysconfig/hwconf:
class: AUDIO
bus: PCI
detached: 0
driver: cmpci
desc: "C-Media Electronics Inc|CM8738"
vendorId: 13f6
deviceId: 0111
subVendorId: 13f6
subDeviceId: 0111
pciType: 1
pcibus: 2
pcidev: 9
pcifn: 0
I currently have Linux 2.4.22-1.2149.nptl, and the cmpci module is loaded.
Assuming that the kernel is configured as specified in
/usr/src/linux-2.4.22-1.2149.nptl/configs/kernel-2.4.22-i686.config, the
cmpci module should have MIDI support. There is a line
"CONFIG_SOUND_CMPCI_MIDI=y".
If I load the v_midi module /dev/sequencer can be opened, but then Playmidi
says "No playback device found.". Maybe v_midi is for some other hardware?
/dev/midi00 seems to exist (device 14, 2). Should I link /dev/sequencer to
/dev/midi00?
In that other OS I can play MIDI files just fine, so I know the hardware is
OK.
Thanks in advance for any help.

No Drawers in KDE?
by Thomas
Hi there,
I just tried KDE and find myself unable to add a drawer to the KDE
Controlpanel. There are no drawers available in the 'add' Menu of the
control panel.
Any hint how to do that?
Thanx,

Re: Random System Crashes {Scanned}
by Mike Chepesky
>If you are seeing the problem when you are using the machine, it is

Well, it happened again... I was on the network, but wasn't doing anything
on it (had Mozilla up, but not using it). I was looking at screensaver
previews when it happened this time.
I did find out that Ctrl-Alt-F1 works, and it boots me back to a login
prompt. Unfortunately when I log in, and try "startx" it tells me it is
already running on this display (not too surprisingly...)

seeking quiessence via noflushd
by M.Hockings
Has anyone been successful in using noflushd with FC1 and the
2.4.22-1.2140.nptl kernel ( or 2149) ?
I've obtained version 2.7 of noflushd and it configured, compiled and
installed OK but seems to kick kupdated into a loop or something such
that it draws 88% or the cpu.
Any thoughts ?
Kind regards,
Mike

keyboard shortcut
by Marc Williams
I would like a keyboard shortcut for the menu item "Lock Screen" but I
don't think one exists by default, at least I can't find it in the
docs. Nor can I find how to add it.
Any help?
