TOP Question
by Ed Warner
I've noticed an entry in "TOP" that I don't remember
seeing before, nor is it listed in the man pages.
In the memory section there is a display called
"active" and inactive", that lists the size of memory
for these two.
What is inactive memory?
What's the difference between used memory and active memory?

1) Please do NOT hijack foreign threads! Mails on the list have
reference header tags and thus your mail breaks threads.
2) You should report it to bugzilla if you think you discovered a bug.
Anyway you probably you should better post such questions to the
fedora-devel-list.

XFree86: error loading glx
by Mitch Wiedemann
My wife's computer is showing the following error in XFree86 Log:
(II) LoadModule: "glx"
(II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so
dlopen: /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so: symbol _nv000344gl,
version LIBGLCORE not defined in file libGLcore.so.1 with link time
reference
(EE) Failed to load /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so
(II) UnloadModule: "glx"
(EE) Failed to load module "glx" (loader failed, 7)
The box is running 2.4.22-1.2149.nptl. I've read the NVIDIA_GLX/README
file. I've un-installed the driver and removed all related files
(mentioned in the README), and then re-installed. The installer builds
the kernel module, X runs without any trouble, just no glx (which means
no Neverwinter Nights :( ).
My computer is running the same kernel, and is loading glx without any
trouble, but I believe I installed the NVIDIA driver before I last
updated the kernel.
My XFree86 Log looks like this:
(II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so
(II) Module glx: vendor="NVIDIA Corporation"
compiled for 4.0.2, module version = 1.0.5328
Module class: XFree86 Server Extension
ABI class: XFree86 Server Extension, version 0.1
I've searched all over the net, to no avail. Can anyone shed some light
on this?

o.k.This behaviour started yesterday, but I didn't carry any change on
my graphic card settings...Any idea???
Tnx

Anyone know why when I try and reply to a mail on this list it bounces
back and tells me I'm sending to an "Unwanted_To Address"?

by listas@lozano.eti.br
Hi,
I have an ipaq running familiar 7.2. Fedora should recognize the ipaq as it is
put on the usb craddle and start a ppp link using usbnet, but nothing happens.
It was sugested I should get a newer kernel. Before I try this, anyone on this
list uses an ipaq (mine is an h3800) and familiar linux?

The message below was originally rejected by your Spam Filter, but was re-sent through webmail. It was blocked for: F5_Unwanted_To_Address: fedora-list(a)redhat.com.

I have a Ipaq 5550 with windoze. However, it was a known problem by time i checked that USB connection was not working. The only choice in mycase was serial connection, regardless of what flavour of linux is running.
Kernel recompiling can help if your PDA is not properly recognized when you plug the usb cable. Dmesg is your friend in this case.
You may want to try synce, multisync and all the gnome/kde packages ontheir site (synce.sourceforge.net i presume).

LCD monitor recomendation
by Richard E Miles
Hi
I 'm looking to upgrade my monitor and would like to get an LCD monitor.
Preferable a 17 inch. Can I just buy a monitor or do I have to worry
about linux XFree86 compatibility?
Can anybody recommend a good LCD monitor?
Thanks

Re: Fewer partitions are better (Re: Disk Layout/Partitioning Practices)

The combination of LVM with a journalled filesystem under Linux is similar
to AdvFS under Tru64. One difference is that with Linux LVM you have to
unmount a partition to resize it. Another is that AdvFS allows you to
defragment a live filesystem.
> Backups can be done with the vdump and vrestore.
The disadvantage of this is that your backups aren't portable to another OS.
There are no special backup tools for LVM partitions under Linux. Just use
pax,
tar, cpio, afio or whatever you normally use (but not dump)!
