Escaping "upgrade hell"
by Bob Shaffer
I've recently been investigating certain (I won't mention any names)
distributions which seem to have an endless life-cycle. With these
distributions, it seems that you can keep all of the software on your
system at the most current versions and avoid the process of upgrading
your entire O/S when new releases become available. This seems like the
only logical way of handling things to me. Is it possible to do this with
Red Hat/Fedora or, if not, will this be something that will be possible in
the future and when?

Epiphany in FC2
by Paul Vandenberg
Hi,
It looks like FC2 will have a development snapshot of Epiphany
(1.1.12). Any reason why Fedora is using this version of Epiphany when
the stable version 1.2.x was released a while ago, i.e. before GNOME
2.6 was released? I know Red Hat was thinking about making Epiphany
the default browser in the future, but it seems that the Fedora
project isn't that big on it. Anyone in the know, who can clarify
things for me?
Thanks.....Paul

Redhat Support Sucks!!!!
by Scott Burch
*This message was transferred with a trial version of CommuniGate(tm) Pro*
Just a quick note to let people on this list know. Stay with Fedora!
Don't install RedHat!
I had a customer that just needed to feel good by purchasing telephone
support, so I installed RedHat. We had an issue with a driver, I called
RedHat and almost a month later have not heard back from them (even though
we purchased the 4 hour response contract).
Tell your customers that buying RedHat is not worth the cost. The
support is better on this forum and it's free!
Keep up the good work guys.

KDE 3.2.2
by Peter Cannon
Hi All
I know this probably has been covered before but is there an easy
painless way to upgrade to the latest stable version of KDE?
I am currently running 3.1.4-4 Red Hat yum has not upgraded this,
perhaps because of the title not sure really, I have looked at KDE's
site and could download the latest version but I don't seem to be able
to find instructions for upgrading my system.
I have a basic knowledge RPM and have done configure make make install
but just let it run its course I wouldn't know what to do if it went
wrong.
Will I need to un-install the Red Hat version and install 3.2 or is
there a way to upgrade?
Regards

RE: RedHat Support Sucks!!!!
by Nix, Robert P.
That was my first thought as well, but I talked directly to him, and he was following up with RedHat, and not getting the response or attention his problem needed. In this case, the wheel squeaked, but was allowed to fall off anyway.
We also talked about providing a bit more detail beyond his conclusions, which he did in a later message. Since that message, he has received several suggestions here, and some new attention from RedHat. I have to agree though that his initial attempt to find relief through RedHat would have left a bad taste in my mouth as well.
My hope is that he is now on a path that will lead to a solution.

KDE dies
by Edwin Humphries
My new fedora installation (fully updated) seems to be subject to KDE
dying - nothing I can do seems to resurrect it, and whilst I know
there is a way to open a new tty shell f4rom within an X application,
I can't seem to find it.
What's worse, when it happens, it seems to kill the USB system: when
loading into Windows, it can't find the USB mouse attached, and seems
to require making a change to the USB settings in the BIOS.
Weird!

I got around the problem by using the following exclude line in my yum.conf
exclude=gtkhtm* fortun* kdetoys evolutio* gnome-pilo* libsou*
It appears that evolution, gnome-pilot, and libsoup need the update to
gtkhtml3.
I am not sure what you mean by what mirror for yum you're using. I can
provide my yum.conf file if you would like, but there are quite a few
repositories in there and I am not sure which one has the gtkhtml3 update
that may be causing the issue.

Old Farts and Young Farts
by glm
Hi All,
As I understand it the only real difference would be the Aroma; and,
therefore lets get it together as we all have the best opportunity to
acheive undeniable success with the Fedora Project.
Can I suggest that we concentrate our efforts to this end and face the
fact that we are stuck with RPMs and that with the YUM to update,
upgrade, install, info, remove, list, clean, provides, check-update,
group install, groupupdate, and group list we are well endowed to
acheive this.
Please take a look at the YUM HOW- TO and try root@FC1xxxx # yum update
and then root@FC1xxxx # yum install.
You can also use YUM to keep your other RH distros Up2date quickly and
simply.
