That would make me feel better. Because I feel like I have a good grasp
on Samba, so thus the reason this is so puzzling. I believe I'm using
3.0.2-7.

The fact that you mount the remote share at all means you are
authenticating - be it the correct credentials or not. I've lost the
original thread - what is the syntax of the command you are using to mount?

fresh upgrade from rh8.0 to FC1, gtk etc problems
by Gene Heskett
I have a 3 part $PACKAGE_CONF_PATH (or whatever its named), as follows
since I have kde3.2, installed in /root as the default face on this
box:
[root@coyote /]# echo $PKG_CONFIG_PATH
/usr/local/lib/pkgconfig:/root/kde3.2/lib/pkgconfig:/usr/lib/pkgconfig
There are duplicates of various ages in these seperate dirs and I
obviously need to do some space patrol.
Since the install, and in fact before it, I gradually became aware of
gtk/gdk problems. I'm determined to get rid of one of the pkgconfig
directories as its obviously obsolete after the install of FC1.
Forceibly re-installing a package being complained about by a
Makefile is not solving my problems due to finding the wrong includes
and libs etc, etc.
Which one of /usr/lib/pkgconfig and /usr/local/lib/pkgconfig dirs is
now the correct place to reference for the *.pc files on an FC1
updated box?
Where also, did the install put all the -devel includes so I can get
rid of the older/out of date ones in the other tree?
Ditto question for libs?

esd daemon
by mdsabila
Hi all,
Is it normal for esd to establish connections to the internet? Simple
netstat gave me a several established connection to different server
even to my ISP DNS machine on port 53. Also, any program out there that
can view tcp connection as 'top' can do for processes?
TIA.

HP's 441 technology
by Chadley Wilson
Hi there ppl,
I read an article in the brainstorm mag where HP has come up with a
Linux solution where they are saving money on hardware costs.
The 441 is a bit of a scare but obviously do-able.
what the 441 is , is a pc with minimum 8 usb and 4 VGA cards.
How this works is they use usb keyboards and mice and split the one PC
into 4 workstations.
Obviously the question is how did they do it, is there a way to set this
up with out their fancy hp software using Linux? FC1 in-particular

Disappearing audio device.
by akonstam@trinity.edu
This is roughly the scenario:
1. I installed rp8--- rpm
2. Could not access audio card got an error message that the card was
being used by another program.
3, removed realplayer8
4.Installed RealPlayer9 rpm.
5. My audiocard disappeared. It is still found by hwbrowser, and it
still is in the kudzu /etc/sysconfig.hwconf database
6. But redhat-config-soundcard says it can't find the soundcard.
Another error I get from some applications is that they can not find
/dev/dsp, but this device is there and seems to have the right
characteristics.
I have removed RealPlayer9 it does not help. rebooting does not help.
Any ideas of where to look for the problem?

Re: Firefox and Fedora
by Gareth Russell
As far as I know Paul, Fedora will be sticking with the main Mozilla web
browser for the foreseeable future. This is mainly due to the fact that
Firefox is meant to be a very lightweight client and not a full featured
browser like Mozilla is, and Firefox still hasn't reached a 1.0 version
as of yet. Its still too new.
Hope that helps

Does anyone on this list recommend a wireless broadband router that they

Re: Old farts and new Linux

Let's see just how off topic we can get ...

Keith kvetches:
By my math, Linus is 34y 4m old. According to the gigasecond server
( http://www.araneus.fi/gigasecond/ ) he will be 2^31 seconds old on
Friday January 15, 2038 ( He was 2^30 seconds old on Jan. 7 this year).
But with cryonics, nanotechnology and proper precautions, perhaps he
will turn out to be a 64 bit quantity. Here's hoping. Imagine, 10 digit
major kernel numbers... :-)

[OT] webserver ?
by Michael Weiner
I have a question i realize is off topic somewhat but i need a little
assistance if i might.
I have a rather large domain i am responsible for running a webserver,
and in an effort to improve the site's rankings in search engines, a
consulting firm has suggested some interesting changes to the way the
webserver operates. Their first suggestion which i am struggling with is
to take all requests to http://w.blah, http://ww.blah and send a 301
redirect back to the user to http://www.blah. Not being an apache
rewrite module expert, i thought i would throw the question out to the
community at large and see what suggestions might arise.
I apologize again for being somewhat off topic here, but this is on a
fedora core 1 install to replace a rather large rh73 base running the
website.
Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.

Dual Boot Installation
by Edwin Humphries
G'day all,
I'm installing fedora on a windows XP computer: it has a 40Gb
partition: 13Gb NTFS windows system partition, 102 boot Linux
partition, 11.9 Gb Linux root partition, 957 Mb Linux swap partition,
and 2 Fat32 shared data partitions.
I've been consistently getting 2 errors:
1. When partitioning, I get a "boot partition /boot may not meet
booting constraints of your system for you architecture".
2. when installing packages (at random stages): "There was an error
installing [package]. This can indicate media failure, lack of disk
space, and/or hardware problems. This is a fatal error and your
install will be aborted. Please verify your media and try your
install again. Press the OK button to reboot your system." The media
has checked out fine.
To try and resolve this problem, I've tried:
1. Installing off CD with "linux allowcddma" - same problem
2. Installing off CD with "linux ide=nodma" - same problem
3. Installing off newly burned CDs - same problem
4. Installing via local FTP from previously downloaded ISOs - same
problem
5. Installing via local FTP from rpms extracted from previously
downloded ISOs - same problem
6. Installing via local from newly re-downloaded rpms - same
problem
I'm fresh out of ideas - does anyone have any suggestions? :-/
