Sudden problem with LAN access to some of the net
by Claude Jones
This problem has so stumped me I don't know if I can fairly describe it, but I
post what I can here to see if it strikes a chord with anyone else. My
scenario is an FC4 machine that is right on the net - I use this as my home
machine and it is mostly for experimentation and email. I use FWBuilder to
protect it. It serves as dhcp server to several pc's in my home all running
Windows. All has been working well for months. Two nights ago, I was trying
to get bittorrent to work and was experimenting with opening various ports.
That same night I did some updates. That's a poor description, I realize, but
it is just to set the stage. The next morning, two of the pc's on my Lan had
lost some of their connectivity. My wife's laptop, for example, couldn't get
email or run messenger - just returned 'couldn't connect' messages. However,
she could still browse websites. Similar problems with a second pc that I
don't have much access to, so I can't be specific but, he couldn't get mail.
Two other pc's continued to function normally. I fired up an old laptop I
keep here for testing, and it connected and all functions worked.
So -- dhcp is working - the problem machines are getting valid addresses -
they continue to have some functionality
I suspect an issue with DNS - I had set up a DNS server on my FC4 box months
ago, and it has been working well - dhcp gives out 127.0.0.1 as the dns
server to the lan machines - what I did to fix the problem was to change that
entry in dhcp to my isp's DNS server - presto, things started working...
So, any ideas on what I could have broken with my DNS configuration?

Monitoring file integrity with FC4 - Tripwire??
by Hahnel William J (CI)
I'm looking for a mechanism to monitor the integrity of critical files on my
FC4 servers. I understand Tripwire is the application to do it but I am
having no success getting it set up. I downloaded the source from
SourceForge but can not follow how to set it up. I could not locate an RPM
for the application.
Any help getting something set up would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Radeon x.org driver - does it need kernel module?
by Toralf Lund
What exactly is the deal with the radeon x.org driver and kernel module
on FC3/4? Do I have to install the module for the X driver to work? If I
do, what's the correct modprobe.conf entry?

Computer on a PCI card
by Brian D. McGrew
Good morning!
Remember the SunPCI cards? A whole computer on a PCI card sans the disk
subsystem which was provided by the host???
Well, I'm looking for the same thing but something I can drop into an
Intel machine (Dell 1800/850) and run a second OS on. I know I'm into
blade technology now but I need to put this in a tower box.
Can anyone point me off in a direction where I might find such a
creature?
Thanks!

strange characters in terminalmode
by roland
Hello everybody,
Normally I use Alt-Ctrl-F1
FX to make a telnet session to the
fedora-server
Using offcourse LTSP
To get nicer screens I use frames with the standaard graphic
characterset.
Everything works well with LTSP but when I do the same in a
terminalsession of the linux graphical console all the graphicchar
change into some exotic characters.
How can I fix this?
Thanks

Re: PCI error on x86_64 2.6.13 kernel
by Jack Howarth
I can confirm that I don't get this mem allocation kernel
error on the Sun dual Opteron when using the 2.6.12-1.1456_FC4smp
kernel rpms instead of the 2.6.13-1.1526_FC4smp rpms. Of course
these are the x86_64 rpms.

Re: removing nvidia drivers for livna rpm
by Jack Howarth
I figured out that I needed to rerun the installer
NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-7667-pkg2.run with the --uninstall
flag. After deinstalling and reinstalling the nvidia kernel
rpms from livna using yum everything works fine now.

PCI error on x86_64 2.6.13 kernel
by Jack Howarth
Using the latest 2.6.13 kernels in FC4 on a Sun dual opteron
workstation, I am seeing an error at boot time that doesn't happen
under older kernels.
Oct 3 11:21:48 diego kernel: MEM window: d0200000-d02fffff
Oct 3 11:21:48 diego kernel: PREFETCH window: disabled.
Oct 3 11:21:48 diego kernel: PCI: Failed to allocate mem resource #6:20000@f0000000 for 0000:09:00.0
This appears to be a non-fatal error at first glance but is worrisome.
Has anyone else seen this problem and is there a fix of any sort?

CPU load monitor - kcpuload available for FC4?
by Claude Jones
I'm looking for an rpm or source for kcpuload - does anyone have this working
for FC4? I like it because it's simple, loads in the systray, and does one
thing, show CPU activity; it does this quite nicely for SMP machines, which
is what I need it for. I've hunted around one but I can't seem to find
anything except for Debian - if anyone knows of an alternative, I would also
be interested.

Login error (Gnome 2.12)
by Marcus Zingmark
After all I installed Gnome 2.12 with the nrpms RPM instead of with Garnome.
Everything seems to work just fine instead of one thing, I get this
error when trying to log in with my guest account.
This is what I get:
"Your $HOME/.dmrc file have incorrect permissions and is being ignored.
This prevents the default session and language from being saved. File
should be owned by user and have 644 permission."
The files is owned by user "guest" and have 644 permission, since that
didn't work I tried to erase the file and see if I got any result, but
non there neither (put the file back).
Any idea what I should do?
