But now, whenever I choose a screensaver, it just does blank
screen, it does the preview allright, but not when I wait to see

Help need for fc3 installing on IBM Xseries 360
by Jin Baiqi
Hello, I installed fc3 on this 4-cpus machine and
found that it can boot with linux kernel with only one
cpu supported.
However, when I try to boot with SMP kernel, it keeps
rebooting. This machine has 4 cpus and 2 scsi hard
disks. This machine is supposed to support redhat
enterprise 7.2.
I will very appreciate you for any advice or possible
hints.

Yes. Basically, all you need to support multiple
processors is the SMP
support in the Linux kernel. And Fedora comes with
SMP-compiled kernels
available.
> Or how can I get around to use 4 CPUs efficiently?
Make sure you're using the SMP kernel: type uname -r
and check for the
letters "smp". Or look at /proc/cpuinfo and count the
processors.

The fact that I've seen several people say "Good bye", "this is crap, I'm leaving", etc. This list IS a tremendous resource. It is also a tremendous burdon when people get this far off topic, and refuse to let go. That's when people new to the list; people who just wanted some help with their system, throw up their arms and say "Enough of this crap: I don't need 50 e-mails about how to post which get me no closer to a running system; I'll just re-install Windows and be done with it."
The argument has two sides, and there can only be an argument if both sides participate. If you really feel so strongly about Top or Bottom posting, or html, or business mandated signature blocks, and have a problem with how someone posts, TAKE IT OFF THE LIST! Talk to the specific person directly. But don't make everyone else suffer through your argument. GO OFF THE LIST! Another precept of using a list is that you don't send personal messages on list; YOU TAKE IT OFF THE LIST. Everyone is so freakin' worried about the whole top posting issue that they've set aside all other manner of "rules" for list posting.
LET THIS DIE! TAKE IT OFF THE LIST! You ARE losing subscribers over something stupid and unnecessary. Again, JUST LET THIS DIE.

PHP doubts
by Rajiv
Dear All,
I am able do add password using the following PHP script
<?php
$password="pass";
exec("useradd user2");
$volumesp = popen("passwd user2", "w");
fputs($volumesp,$password."\n");
fputs($volumesp,$password."\n");
pclose($volumesp);
?>
# php sample.php - gives sucessful output
The password for the user "user2" is being created sucessfully.
But I am unable to add a samba user using a similar script
<?php
$password="pass";
$volumesp = popen("smbpasswd -a user1", "w");
fputs($volumesp,$password."\n");
fputs($volumesp,$password."\n");
pclose($volumesp);
?>
# php sample.php - I am have to enter the password 2 times like I do in
command line.
I am also facing the same problem with smbadduser instead of smbpasswd
command. Infact these are the only commands I am facing problems executing
in PHP scripts.
I agree - this may not be the right list for this question - Pls help me in
troubleshooting this problem or atlest help me guiding to the right list.

Rajiv

nscd (and NetworkManager) 100% cpu problem
by Chris Jones
Hi All,
I have recently started having problems when running Network Manager on
FC3. I have been using it without any major problems for a while, but
now when I activate the server, its seems to work, connecting correctly
to the appropriate network. The problem is that it seems to start up
nscd which then goes into a 100 % cpu usage state, and also seems broken
since "su" for example then no longer works.
I'm not really sure where the problem is, but I suspect nscd since I get
a similar problem is I start it by hand, even if Networkmanager is not
running.
Any suggestions ?
I'm running nscd 2.3.4-2.fc3 updated from the fedora repositories. I
have updated things recently (must notably going to kde 3.4) but I
cannot pinpoint any change that caused this...
cheers Chris

RE: installing Request Tracker 3.4.1 on FC3
by Ronald Nissley
I have RT 3.4.1 running on FC3. It works fairly well...I'm running it on
some older hardware which may explain the (IMO) somewhat slow
performance. I've not yet been successful running it using fast-cgi and
suexec, but haven't given up. It took a lot of time and patience to get
it installed and running. Probably the single greatest time investment
was reading through much of the documentation
(http://wiki.bestpractical.com/). The following is for FC2, but should
still be largely relevant:
http://wiki.bestpractical.com/index.cgi?FedoraCore2InstallGuide If you
have a specific question I'll do my best to answer.
Best wishes!

Subject: installing Request Tracker 3.4.1 on FC3
Has anyone successfully installed Request Tracker 3.4.1 on Fedora Core
3?
http://www.bestpractical.com/rt/
We've been able to install it very easily under Debian using 'apt-get
install request-tracker3':
http://packages.debian.org/testing/misc/request-tracker3.4
We tried the RPM for RH9/FC1, but ran in to all kinds of dependency
issues. We've also tried installing from the tarball and following the
instructions, which was also a major headache.
Any hints to getting Request Tracker working on FC3? Is there a yum or
apt repository that has RPMs?

- Robert

Squirrelmail and Index.php
by Corey Head
Ok, here's my configuration:
squirrelmail-1.4.4-1.FC3
httpd-2.0.52-3.1
I've got Squirrelmail and Apache setup and they're
working great! The only annoyance is that from any
browser I should be able to type
www.myserver.com/webmail and get the login page. It
doesn't happen unless I type in
www.myserver.com/webmail/index.php. The 'index.php'
is entered in httpd.conf as a DirectoryIndex.
Following up on the earlier thread, adding an
additional '/' at the end of webmail, didn't fix the
problem. The alias in the squirrelmail.conf file in
httpd/conf.d is as follows
Alias /webmail /usr/share/squirrelmail
In that directory is a file called index.php. I've
tried changing permissions on the individual file and
the directory as a whole. For a while I even had it
as 777 for the whole directory. No luck still. I put
it back to 755 and tried changing owner/group to
apache and root and random users, but to no avail. I
do have another .php file that works just great for
phpicalendar. So...my dillema I believe is with
squirrelmail. Any ideas? Or should I just give up
and create a virtual host?
Thanks!
Corey

hardware question: Intel entry server board SE7221BK1 & Fedora Core 3
by Alexander Dalloz
Hello all!
The advantage of such a nice community base is, that we can share
hardware experiences - I still have in mind a community feeded database
of compatible and non-compatible hardware for Fedora .
I am now in the situation to build and setup a new server system for a
client very urgently as the old server hardware seems to die. So I would
like to hear that the Intel entry server board I now had a close look at
is no problem for the current Linux kernel and Fedora in specific:
http://www.intel.com/design/servers/boards/SE7221BK1-E/index.htm
Does anybody of you run this board with Fedora Core 3? Any feedback is
welcomed. So especially is SATA problem free with the chipset - the RAID
function seems to be BIOS supported software/driver RAID only and is no
must - and how about the lm_sensors support? I found that the National
Semiconductor LM96000 chip should work with the LM85 module, while for
the National Semiconductor* PC87427 I didn't found anything. Remote
observation of fan radiation and temperatures is needed.
Red Hat Linux Enterprise 3.0 is supported, but that always means the
"costs" to need a specific kernel for the provided drivers & tools. As
security update kernel come out more frequently than such driver updates
are provided such dependency on non open source / GPL software is hardly
acceptable with a system connected to the net 24/7.
Any experience based input is apprechiated. Maybe a suggested alternate?
Who prefers to stay anonym may mail me personally :)
Cheers
Alexander

YUM Question
by Joachim Backes
Hi,
in my /etc/yum.conf, there is an option
exclude=kernel*
But is seems to be without any effect: If a update my system by
yum update
it offers the kernel packages too.
Only when using
yum --exclude kernel'*' update
then the kernel packages are not offered for update.
What I'm dowing wrong?
