Restarting XServer
by Mark Sargent
Hi All,
my book don't cover it, and googling, for some reason, gave nothing
specific(restarting x server(on Fedora 3)). Was instructed to do this,
after starting the iiimf app for Japanese input. Cheers.

Just my opinion, but I would tend to go with the newest I could get my
hands on. I had a similar experience with a company that was a
collection agency. They were still running RHL 7.3 and wanted to know
why their system wasn't supported anymore. They, via their primary
consultant, were also afraid to upgrade to a newer version because of an
irrational fear things wouldn't work - despite having an updated system
with their critical software applications running on it demonstrated to
them. They actually came in and rolled back to RHL 7.3 after completing
an upgrade because of this fear and then tried to say I didn't do
anything for them. <sheesh...!>
As an side note, I don't do business for collection agencies anymore -
the ones I've dealt with were as cheap as they were repeatedly and
knowingly unethical (even illegal) in their practices. But I digress...
Anyway, your assertions are essentially correct about versioning - RH/FC
handle this much better than Windows, but it's not perfect either. Be
sure to test no matter what you do. I think the better question to ask
in your situation is should you be running Fedora Core or Red Hat
Enterprise Linux. I would choose between Fedora Core 4 since it's due
for release on June 6 or Red at Enterprise Linux 4. I've been running
FC4 Test2 / Test 3 / Rawhide with no serious issues other than things
you'd expect from running pre-release software. I'll be updating as soon
as I can download the final version. If you need the security of a
company supported distro, go with RHEL4.
Hope that helps!
Cheers,
Chris

Small Linux Distros
by mlists
I was wondering if anyone could help me, I'm in the process of creating
a new network appliance and am looking for a small extensible rpm based
distro does anyone have any suggestions?
I seem to remember reading something a while back about a distro that
allowed you to create your own custom distro, or am I just going mad?
Thanks in advance

Add the following line to the bottom of the acl section in squid.conf
(you will have to do some reading to figure out where)
acl allowedsite dstdomain .abc.net
Add the following line to the top of the http_access section, but
below the "INSERT YOUR OWN RULE(S) HERE..." line
http_access deny !allowedsite
Save and restart the squid service.
You should try googling for a solution before posting a mail here.

Yum "problem"
by Sasa Stupar
Hi!
Before I didn't have any problems with updating my FC3 using yum but now
I got this issue about dependencies:
---------
--> Processing Dependency: clamav = 0.85.1-1.1.fc3.rf for package: clamd
--> Finished Dependency Resolution
Error: Missing Dependency: clamav = 0.85.1-1.1.fc3.rf is needed by
package clamd
-----------
However, I have clamav allready installed:
------------
# rpm -qa | grep clam
clamd-0.85.1-1.1.fc3.rf
clamav-0.85.1-1.1.fc3.rf
clamav-milter-0.85.1-1.1.fc3.rf
clamav-db-0.85.1-1.1.fc3.rf
---------------
I have tried with "yum clean all" and restarted update with "yum -y
update" but still the same problem.
I use the following repositories:
dag
extras
base
updates-released
Is there something wrong with yum or what?

Sasa

Get a card wit the Orinoco chipset (e.g. Enterasys and many branded-names
from Dell, HP and others.).
Found none on eBay for $20 and it worked from the second I inserted it in
the slot and booted FC3.

Apache + Mod_BW experiences vs QoS
by Ow Mun Heng
Hi,
I'm wondering the effectiveness of using mod_bw or mod_bwshare (which
is masked in portage) versus a solution that uses QoS for Upstream
bandwidth throttling/management.
The fact is that I'm trying to figure out which is the best method in a
virtual server environment which is hosting a couple of independent
web-sites.
Does anyone have any experience to share. My previous tests using QoS
may not be wholly applicable for virtual servers since I control it
using Port ports instead of virtual sites.
Anyone?
