problem with new lcd monitor
by BB Cao
Dear All,
My old monitor finally phased out. Unfortunately when I pluged in, I got a message "mode not support" after FC3 started about 1 minute, and the keyboad didn't respone me, but the machine seemingly is still working in an unvisuable way. Am I supposed to reinstall FC3 in order to solve this problem? Thanks.
Best,
BB Cao

strange new problem -- Auto-logging me out
by Jeff Vian
In the past 4 days my machine has started logging me out.
I am running FC3, fully updated.
I usually leave the system logged in (at home, behind a firewall) and my
email client running to keep my mail server from getting overloaded.
Since about Saturday I have been finding that the system has logged me
out and when I come back to it the screen is at the GUI login.
/var/log/messages shows nothing untoward except the killing of the login

chkrootkit shows nothing.
netstat never shows any unexpected connections.
This looks like something has put the session on auto logout, but the
timing seems a bit intermittent. It never logs out when I am active on
the console, but only after it has been idle for a time.
I have checked preferences and was unable to find anything that would
set the session for an idle timeout/logout.
Does anybody know of a recent update that would do this, or know how I
can check/reset anything that causes the logout?
My habit of leaving the machine run 24X7 with things going on
automatically is being interrupted with this behavior. Any help will be
appreciated.
Thanks

How turn off screen when close notebook?
by Christopher J. Bottaro
Hello again,
I want my notebook's LCD screen to turn off when I close the notebook and
then turn back on when I open it up again.
I opened/closed my notebook and looked in /var/log/acpid:
[Thu Jun 2 15:35:18 2005] received event "button/lid LID 00000080 00000001"
[Thu Jun 2 15:35:18 2005] completed event "button/lid LID 00000080
00000001"
[Thu Jun 2 15:35:46 2005] received event "button/lid LID 00000080 00000002"
[Thu Jun 2 15:35:46 2005] completed event "button/lid LID 00000080
00000002"
So obviously I need to add a conf my /etc/acpi/events dir:
event=button/lid LID 00000080 00000001
action=???turn on LCD???
event=button/lid LID 00000080 00000002
action=???turn off LCD???
What should those actions be? Thanks for the help.

system not swapping
by Eric Storch
I am not sure why but my system is not swapping.
When I run swapon -s it shows:
Filename Type Size Used
Priority/dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol01 partition
2031608 0 -9
When I run free -m it shows:
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 1003 986 16 0 81 450
-/+ buffers/cache: 454 548
Swap: 1983 0 1983
The really odd thing here is when I open a terminal i get:
bash: fork: Resource temporarily unavailable
bash-3.00$
How can I force the kernel to swap?
uname -a shows :
2.6.11-1.27_FC3 #1 Tue May 17 20:27:37 EDT 2005 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
any info is good info, and thanks.

internal and external monitors, different resolutions?
by Roman Maeder
I run FC 3 on an ASUS M68Ne with a 1400x1050 screen. It uses the Radeon 9700
chipset which is well supported by the radeon driver of Xorg. Recently
I was playing with attaching an external monitor/projector. By default, the
same image that is seen on the LCD is also sent to the external monitor,
without any config changes. However, as not all projectors can handle the
high resolution, I am considering an alternative to lowering the resolution
for the whole server. The nicest would be the following: the external
monitor displays the top left 800x600 or so rectangle of the internal
screen. This would be great for presentations, allowing me to view notes
etc. on my screen but not displaying them on the projector. The radeon
driver's clone mode, however seems to imply the same resolution for both
monitors. Does anybody know whether my desired setup is possible?
I understand that I can configure the driver to show two separate views of
one large virtual framebuffers, but then i could not see the projected
image on my internal screen.

apache account to run cronjob ?
by M E Fieu
Hi.. In FC, I need to generate some data using cron
job and display on the web page. I use root to run
cron job and generate the data and those file are of
rwxr-x-r-x so the apache user can execute and display
it on the web.
But because of the senstivity of those data, I used
.htaccess method to protect the web folder. But
because those file are in rwxr-xr-x, any non-user can
login in to the box can still read it.
How to settle this issue. Use apache to run cron job
to generate those file ? But my apache user account
has no shell configured. /bin/nologin I need to
enable its shell ?
