Root mail account is dying

Whenever I attempt to access mail from root, it pauses, then dies with
the following error message.

You have mail in /var/spool/mail/root
I am not worried about the particular messages being shown; I understand
what is going on there (I get SMART messages whenever I reboot the
machine). My concern is that I can't get into root's mail.

to use J in apps. I was expecting to see a small app appear on the
bottom panel. Have I missed something.? Cheers.

OS recommendations/Aging software issues
by Marc M
Hi,
I work for a major defense contractor that is very tight with money at
times. Two years ago, before I came, they got RH 9 (bought or downloaded-
whatever). I guess that got deemed appropriate to buy at the time, and it
has been sitting here getting old ever since. The purpose of this server is
to run Symantec Manhunt on it as an IDS. They bought Manhunt at the same
time and never got around to deploying it until now.
Now I am about to deploy a linux server (Dell) and I am trying to figure out
which version to go with - RH 9, FC 1-3, or whatever. I want it to be
redhat-based since I am the main admin, and I am more comfortable with that
than on debian based systems.
On the other hand I am not sure what to do. My boss makes the argument that
we need to run the oldest, since he has seen versioning issues and conflicts
in this situation. However most of that is in the world of Windows which
does stupid things by default as we all know.
In this scenario my argument is <still> that we should go with something
more recent. I don't like the idea of putting something out there that is so
old it isimpractical by today's standards, that am going to think is stupid.
I guess there is some wisdom in being able to keep the age of the OS in sync
with the age of the software, but in the linux realm, that really isn't the
same issue as it is in other areas - right? OTOH I don't want to do a 'yum
update' on the box and not be able to get updates because the version is so
<frickin'> old. I think FC2 would be a good choice. Although it is still
old, it at least is a little bit ahead of RH9. An additional concern - even
if I were to deploy FC2, I would probably want to upgrade that too. Is that
gonna be a problem? Can I upgrade versions of Fedora (2 to 3 to whatever) on
a production box without a lot of problems? Will yum do that cleanly and
consistently without a lot of headaches?
Whatever choice I make is going to have to last for a good while. Does
anyone have any advice for this situation?
Thanks in advance
Marc

Problem with Latex2Html and kdvi
by Harald Grossauer
1.) When I try to run latex2html on a simple document it fails. The
problem seems to be somewhere in the pstoimg script, which fails with a
"bad file descriptor" error on my FC4_test3_x86_64 box. On another FC3
box (x_86) it fails with a segfault. Without wanting to flame: it runs
perfectly on a Suse box!
2.) Compiling of Latex documents is successfull. Viewing them in KDVI
gives (on the FC4_test3 box):
File corruption! KDVI had trouble interpreting your DVI file. Most
likely this means that the DVI file is broken.
The DVI code set a character of an unknown font.
The same doc compiles and views correctly on the FC3 box.
Any comments on these two problems?

sync'ing & editing Palm device data under FC3
by Thomas Tschoellitsch
How could I sync a Palm device under FC3? Apparently there's no
version of the original HotSync Manager (although it might work using
WINE, which I haven't tried yet).
Aside of purely sync'ing I'd be interested in editing my data, too. So
if there was something similar to Palm Desktop for FC3/ that you could
recommend, please do.

No IIMF Selection in System Settings(Tools?)
by Mark Sargent
Hi All,
on my fresh install FC3, home box, I see a selection in settings(could
be tools, though) for input method for IIIMF. On my upgraded FC3
machine, work box, I don't. I checked that all the RPMs were installed,
/iiimf-server, iiimf-x, iiimf-libs, iiimf-gtk, iiimf-gnome-im-switcher/
and found that this 1
/iiimf-gnome-im-switcher
/ wasn't. So, I installed via yum, and due to it still not appearing, I
even did a reboot, to no avail. Anyone know if this is a known thing for
an upgraded system.? I also added InputMethod Switcher to my panel, but,
when clicking Add or Remove, there are no language select options in
either Available Languages or Languages shown in menu. Need to add
something.? I get the feeling that the selection that is in either
Settings or tools is another app altogether. Cheers.

building php, using mysql for apache2
by bruce
hi...
trying to build php4 with mysql4.1-12, for use in apache2. i have the
following "./compile" that works for php5. however, when i try to use it for
php4, i get a msg, stating that it can't find the MySQL Headers...
can anybody provide any pointers as far as what the Headers are for mysql,
and where they'd be located? if i knew the files, i could do a search to
find where they're located.
----------------------------------
./configure --with-apxs2=/usr/sbin/apxs --with-mysql=/usr/bin/mysql_config

Fonts messed with new "freetype" upgrade
by Gene Smith
I had great fonts in Firefox with FC3. Today I did a yum update and new
freetypes package was installed. Fonts look bad now and can't seem to
get good ones back. (Of course "great" and "bad" are subjective.) My
fonts were set (I think) to Bitstream Sans/Serif. Tried others on list
(Luxi, etc) and still not good. Now they are wide-spaced and not as
dark. Any idea where my "good" fonts went or how to get them back?
