Misconfiguration or ferature.
by Aaron Konstam
Maybe this has been addressed before and I missed it.
When I insert a data CD in FC6 as a normal user the CD is mounted and a
nautilus window with its contents appear.
As root the data CD is not mounted. The presferences in both cases are
identical. Have I missed something ore are data CD-s not supposed to be
mountable by root?

aaron konstam:
Ok, I am just being picky. What you are saying is ok as long as:
1. The rescue disk is for the same version of FC as the system whose MBR
you are updating.
2. The system on hd0 has not had its grub updated in any way.
In most cases that will be true but for many of us who grab the first
rescue disk we have available you instructions will get you in trouble
---
aaron,
your comment 1. doesn't seem to jibe with my experience:
i used a knoppix cd to reboot and run those cmds
to restore the mbr on an fc5 system

Repost: FC6 kernel lockup when ripping CD on laptop
by Wade Hampton
G'day and Happy New Year,
I am trying to rip CDs for my wife's new MP3 player but am having problems
with my laptop. I successfully ripped several without issue but now my
laptop seems to lock up soon after starting the rip process (drives spins
up, then stops, nothing works, have to hard reboot). The system is FC6 with
updates, x86_64:
Gateway mx6421 laptop, DVD+-R drive, 512M RAM, bcm43xx wireless
- wireless using kernel driver (another mail about this one)
Fedora Core 6, 2.6.18-1.2868.fc6 #1 SMP, grip-3.2.0-14.fc6, x86_64
- all updates applied, this was an upgrade from FC5, took 20 hours (prev.
report)
Note, the sky2 driver for this laptop finally works (bug reported to RedHat,
now apparently fixed, with FC5 and earlier kernels the sky2 driver would
stop working after a few minutes).
Any help would be most appreciated.

Repost: issues with my Gateway MX6421 x86_64 laptop, wireless and suspend issues
by Wade Hampton
G'day and Happy New Year,
I am having some issues with my bcm43xx on my Gateway mx6421 x86_64 laptop.
When using ndiswrappers and no encryption, the laptop would reconnect on
each boot and was quite reliable (except for when the linksys wrk54G would
lockup, a real piece of junk). When I turned on 128bit WEP and moved to the
bcm43xx driver, things are different. I power up the laptop and the network
does not come up (can't ping the wireless gateway). If I start kwifimanager
and restart networking (/sbin/service network restart) is usually comes up
(sometimes takes a couple of times to get it to come up.).
I also can't use the laptop more than about 20' from the hub. I used to be
able to use it upstairs, but it drops out. I have tried multiple channels
and even set the wireless router to B mode only, G mode only, and mixed
mode.
Kwifimanager used to display a nice plot of signal versus noise. The plot
appears broken and I can't select a network connection. However,
kwifimanager seems to help getting the connection up.... Is there a Gnome
equivalent application?
The laptop is set to ACPI S3 mode in the BIOS. I tried suspend from the
GUI. I suspends but on unsuspend, the screen stays black and nothing works
(for example caps lock does not work so even keyboard is down). I also
tried the script from: http://www.linux.com/article.pl?sid=06/05/24/1716222
which saves video state, changes to VT1, and restores video state on
unsuspend. Any help would be most appreciated as we use this laptop on the
coffee table and it is up quite a lot (it needs to be shutdown more often).
This plus the bcm43xx issue make restarts and suspends a real problem.
Any help would be most appreciated.

tom horsley responded to Aaron Konstam
The resuce mode boot already has copies of grub and other things
in the rescue boot image, and the raw disk devices are there even
if I don't mount them. Grub only needs access to the disk device
to write the MBR, not any mounted partitions.
These instructions do assume that your original /boot partition
and all the kernel images and grub config files are still there
on whatever (hd0,0) maps too. If they've been clobbered as well,
these instructions won't help much. In that case you'll need to mount
the disks and restore them from back (you do have backups,
right? :-).
----
jack byers response:
aaron, tom
thanks to both for your responses
I agree with tom's first paragraph above, re grub not needing mounted
partitions
tom's 2d paragraph above sounds like another response to me.
Maybe i didnt make it clear, but in the msg that aaron responded to,
I had already reported success on getting my original grub boot menu back
which i assume could only happen if indeed i had managed to restore grub
to the mbr.
to answer tom's last question, nothing else was clobbered,
so it all just worked:
my use of tom's instructions,
first booting off a knoppix cd, and
aided by an initial grub> find /boot/grub/stage1
worked perfectly
Jack

Puplet doesn't work
by Jonathan Ryshpan
When I start puplet, which I do from the shell ("$ puplet") nothing
happens, except that a blank space appears in the system tray. Running
as root and using KDE the same thing happens. Under gnome nothing
happens at all, except that ps shows puplet as running -- I'm not
familiar with gnome so there may be other problems here.
Is this a proper way to start puplet? If not, what is? Does anyone
else have similar problems?
Thanks - jon

Re: Re: xmaple and Fc5 (maple 10)

>I'm having the same problem with xmaple, I have only the splash screen

>Any help will be welcome since, I'm migrating some windows nodes to FC6
I had some initial problems installing maple 10 but my procedure to
get going with a clean FC6 installation was as follows:
1) Insert the CD and ensure the CD is umounted (it is in /dev/hda on
my machine) (change as necessary).
2) Now assume that you have made a directory to hold the install files
called /home/username/maple10/cd_files
3) # cd /home/username/maple10/cd_files to check that the directory exists.
4) Now loop-mount the CD: Make sure that the CD is not mounted - and
as root create a mount point
# mkdir -p /mnt/iso
Then
# mount -o loop /dev/hda /mnt/iso
5) Now copy the files to the directory in the user area called
/home/username/maple10/cd-files,
# cd /mnt/iso/
# rsync -av * /home/username/maple10/cd_files/ . (or equivalent)
Change to the appropriate directory containing the install files in
the user area - you can now umount the CD as it is not needed from
this point. So:
# cd /home/username/maple10/cd_files/Linux/Disk1/InstData/VM
Now edit the LinuxInstaller.bin file retaining its size exactly and
comment out the export line as follows - this is crucial! If you don't
know how to use vim then don't do this without help!
# vim -b +2134 LinuxInstaller.bin
change
' export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL'
to
'# export LD_ASSUME_KERNE'
save and quit
Now enter the main maple10 cd_files directory again, and run the
install script as user (I ignored the warning "error while loading
shared libraries: ibdl.so.2"):
# cd /home/username/maple10/cd_files
# sh installMapleLinuxSU
Follow the instructions presented, and allow the install to go to a
directory of your choice (Better in a non-root partition so that in
future even with a system install the Maple files will remain
untouched.) Enter the Purchase Code when prompted.
Now add a desktop icon pointing to the application binary in the
install area e.g. somepath/maple10/bin/xmaple
Finally double clicking the new icon will run Maple 10 !!! In my case
the first time running it said that I need to enter the activation
code again! However clicking OK seems to load the program fine - next
time it just seemed to work.
I also note the warning - if your system is using SELinux you may have trouble.

update.iso
by Brian D. McGrew
Good morning,
I keep seeing reference to update.iso all over the place but no where
can I find an update.iso file or any information on how to make one???
Anyone know how to make an update.iso file? At least what the
filesystem layout is supposed to be?
