Grub has disabled my CD boot
by Bob Wittorf
I am trying to upgrade Fedora Core 4 to Fedora Core 5. I put the iso disc
which I downloaded into my DVD drive, reboot, and wait. My bios is set to
boot from the CD/DVD drive first. After the bios screen, I get the message
"GRUB stage 2" and then the menu appears. GRUB completely bypasses the boot
from CD stage.
My version of GRUB is .95. I compiled and installed the latest version
1.9XX, but it did not remove the old version. Incidentally, since I can't
boot from this CD drive, I can't get Super-Grub to work either. I don't
know, however, if that will help any.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

Upgrading to FC5
by Jim Lowman
Hello,
I've been running FC4 on a dedicated AMD64 box,
and also on a laptop, and have downloaded and
burned the ISOs for both the i386 and AMD64
versions of FC5.
Is it always recommended to do a clean install,
or would choosing the upgrade option on
installation suffice?
Between versions I use yum upgrade to stay current.
Do I really need to download and install the newer
version of FC?
Sorry for the newbie questions. I'm trying to
make the transition from Windows.
Thanks in advance...Jim

Windows 2000 was there. Now he is not able to boot to windows and he has

How will he get the option of dual boot means how to edit grub so that he
can get the option of dual boot?
Thanks & Regards

New prob, no music player works on this lappy.
by Gene Heskett
Greetings;
HO laptop, dv5320us, light scribe cd/dvd writer drive. FC5-i386
installed.
When I insert an audio cd, it eventially asks me what I want to do I
clicked on play. But that app, although it goes thru the motions (I
think it was Kscd) is silent, and none of the input switches and
buttons in kmix will do anything but bring up circuit noise, no audio
seems to be making it from the cd reader to the rest of the system.
When I looked in /media to see if hal or udev had created a device
there, it had not done so.
grip, noatun and a couple other apps are all similarly blessed with
silence.
Any good ideas as to what to check next?

Annoying win key problem
by Marcelo Magno T. Sales
Hi, folks
There's a problem with the win key in FC5 which is annoying me since I
migrated from FC4. In Fedora's KDE 3.5.1 and later in kde-redhat's KDE
3.5.2, when I logon, the win key doesn't work as it should.
When I press win+C, for example, it looks like these keys are "sensed"
by KDE as two separeted keypresses instead of one "combo" keypress. I
can see this when I try to configure a new shortcut using the win key.
When I press it, the shortcut field shows "win+", but when I press
the next key (while holding win), the shortcut field shows only the
second key pressed and not the combination win+key.
Then I open Regional Settings in Control Center and undo and redo my
keyboard configuration several times until it starts to work again.
It remains working as far as I don't log out. After the next log in,
the win key may or may not work, apparently randomically.
This strange behavior didn't happen in FC4 with KDE 3.5.1 and below.
I use a brazilian ABNT2 keyboard, don't know if this problem occurs
with others keyboard layouts.
I believe the problem is not in KDE, since it didn't happen in FC4
with the same KDE 3.5.1. However, the win key work after I change and
unchange settings in Control Center...
Any clue about why is this happening, or at least where I can start
researching this? Don't know where the problem may be and I have
three FC5 machines with the same behavior.
Thanks,
Marcelo
