Kernel 2.6.16-1.2107_FC5 breaks Squid
by Andreas M. Kirchwitz
Hi folks!
Just installed the new kernel 2.6.16-1.2107_FC5 (32-bit, i686),
and everything seems to work fine -- except Squid (not matter
if I use the one that ships with FC5 or my own).
No problem with small data objects (a few kilobytes).
telnet localhost 3128
GET http://www.kirchwitz.de/test.html HTTP/1.0
Large data objects won't work. According to ethereal, the data
is loaded successfully. And I also find the complete objects
in /var/spool/squid, but the data is not output to the application:
telnet localhost 3128
GET http://www.heise.de/ HTTP/1.0
After a few kilobytes, the stream suddenly stops. Sometimes,
Squid doesn't do any output at all, although the object is in
the cache.
With the previous kernel 2.6.16-1.2096_FC5 all is well.
What has changed in the kernel that makes Squid break so hardly?
Maybe other applications are affected as well. Don't know yet.
The error with squid was simply very obvious. ;-)

wireless connection and X session
by François Patte
Bonjour,
I am facing a problem that I don't understand. I installed FC4 on my
laptop and wireless is working fine but if I launch the wireless
connection after the boot (using for instance ifup eth1) I loose the
ownership of the X session, ie I am unable to open any graphical
application.
If I kill my session and log again, I recover this ownership (and the
wireless connection is not lost...).
Who can help me?
Thank you.

Howto: rolling your own FC5 Kickstart installer DVD's?
by Philip Prindeville
Is there a good document on how to explode the FC5 DVD .iso file, add or
subtract some files and RPM's, maybe add a ks.cfg file to it, and then
put it all
back together again?
Seems that this would be a handy tool... I'd like to be able to do automated
installs of FC5...
Thanks,

Re: please reply to this message, Re: which FC to install..Mercury PVCLE266 Via Socket 370 Flex-ATX
by Jose Achmad Palala
the cpu runs at what speed? how much ram do you have? it's either it didn't
match the requirements so it won't install or you'd need to specify a linux
installation option (i.e. acpi off or something like that at the front.
press F2, F3 or F4 on the boot prompt when you boot to CD... and view the
options.

build pango from source
by Kazimieras Vaina
Hi,
I'm trying to build pango 1.12.2 from source. The
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5200
bug has been fixed in that version.
I'm using spec file from src rpm. I use this command to build pango:
rpmbuild -ba rpmbuild/SPECS/pango.spec --target=x86_64,i386
However build fails giving me this message:

My problem is; I can browse the samba network (win2000 active directory)
in my company. When I click on computers, I can see the shares in them.
If the share is available for everyone, then I can get in. But if the
share is only available to certain users, an authentication dialog pops
up asking for
user, domain, password. Here even if I put the correct values, it will
not let me get in. I thought this was winbind problem - but maybe not.
What do I need to do in order to browse shares? I do not want to join
this computer to the domain or use any authentication based on windows side
to login to this computer, because our windows server is quite
unreliable. On the other hand, I like to use printers and such.

This is a fairly new FC5 installation, new ISP, and new wireless router

Cups and new kernel
by Alberto Ferrante
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA256
Dear all,
it seems that the new kernel, released today as an update
(2.6.16-1.2107_FC5), prevents cups from working correctly. When this
kernel is used, cups does not correctly handle requests (e.g., if you
ask for printer configuration or for printing something, the application
sits there, waiting for cups... That will never reply).
Regards,
Alberto Ferrante

crontab won't run script with absolute path
by kjcsb
I am experiencing a strange problem where crontab won't run a script when I
specify the full path to it.
whereis logrotate
logrotate: /usr/sbin/logrotate /etc/logrotate.conf /etc/logrotate.d
/usr/share/man/man8/logrotate.8.gz
crontab -l
02 21 * * * logrotate /usr/share/mysql/mysql-log-rotate
In this case the crontab doesn't run because of a path issue.
X-Cron-Env: <SHELL=/bin/sh>
X-Cron-Env: <HOME=/root>
X-Cron-Env: <PATH=/usr/bin:/bin>
X-Cron-Env: <LOGNAME=root>
X-Cron-Env: <USER=root>
/bin/sh: logrotate: command not found
crontab -l
02 21 * * * /usr/sbin/logrotate /usr/share/mysql/mysql-log-rotate
In this case the script is not run at all. No errors are reported in the
logfile.
I'm sure there's an easy fix for this other than a symlink to
/usr/sbin/logrotate?
Any advice appreciated.
Regards
Cameron
