Trouble Burning Core 5 CDs
by Bjorgen T. Eatinger
I am trying to create the 5 CDs necessary for a new Fedora Core 5 installation, and can never get a good burn. The media check always fails, during installation.
Once thing I noticed is that the ISO images appear to be a bit larger than 650MB, which is the recordable size of the CDs I am using. I will try 700MB CDs, but I wonder why the images would be distributed to be over 650MB, and if this is really the issue.
I tried burning the CDs using 3 different burners on 3 different workstations, with the same results. Is there a recommended media manufacturer? I am burning at the slowest speed (16x) possible as well.
I have never had so much trouble burning CDs before! In fact, this got so crazy, that I finally gave up and purchased a Fedora book on Core 2 which contained the CDs, and they worked perfect. But I am now running 3 versions behind. This has been an extremely frustrating experience, to say the least.
This is so much trouble, that I wish there was a company that produced and sold a commercial Fedora release on CDs.
Sincerely, Bjorgen T. Eatinger

Got Asus motherboard P5RD1-VM....
The problem is the first two strings indicating that the kernel is not
identifying the devices/chipsets. How to find the right
solution/driver/module, or at least understand what that is for...

FC5 - Eclipse with Sun Java
by Mostafa Afgani
Hi,
I am trying to run Eclipse with the Sun jdk-1.5.0_08 but it fails to
start with the following error messege dialog:
JVM terminated. Exit code=1
/usr/bin/java
-jar startup.jar
-os linux
-ws gtk
-arch x86_64
-launcher /usr/bin/eclipse
-name Eclipse
-showsplash 600
-exitdata f0015
-vm /usr/bin/java
-vmargs
-jar startup.jar
I am using alternatives to manage the java symlink. When the
alternative is set to FC5 jre-1.4.2-gcj version of java, Eclipse
starts up just fine. Is there some configuration step that I have
missed?
TIA,

OT: Searching mail folders and subfolders in evolution
by Patrick Doyle
I know this is a bit off topic, but since evolution seems to be the
default mail client (for FC5, anyway), and since I figure there are
folks out there reading this list who know the answer, I figured it
couldn't hurt to ask...
Does anybody know how to search evolution folders and subfolders for
messages with particular text? I've tried the obvious solution of
selecting the "On this computer" top level folder, selecting "Message
Contains", entering the word for which I am looking, and clicking on
"Find Now". But I don't find any messages. If I navigate down to the
subfolder and repeat the experiment, I find what I'm looking for, but
I don't always know what subfolder contains the information for which
I'm looking.
I've gotten spoiled by Coppernic on WIndows, with it's integration
with Outlook. Should I be looking at beagle to do the same thing? Is
there a Gnome applet similar to the Coppernic applet for Windows?

Reading and applying patches
by Chong Yu Meng
Hi all,
I'm having some difficulty understanding patching in general. A little
background: I downloaded the source tarball for a program and it will
not "make" cleanly. Checking the forum on the website, someone had
published a patch in the form of text in an email that looks like this:
--- mlrate/mlrate.c 2003-01-27 10:31:31.000000000 +0100
+++ mlrate.new/mlrate.c 2004-11-22 12:37:52.086783325 +0100
@@ -25,6 +25,8 @@
#include <string.h>
... and continues for a bit longer
I assume that I should copy and paste the text into a separate file and
save it. But how do I apply the patch to the source file, which is
mlrate.c?
Also, how do I read the file? From some patch files I have come across,
they have "pluses" and "minuses" and other notation. What do they mean?
Can someone point me to some URLs where I can understand more about
these patch files?
Thanks in Advance!

How to create /dev/dsp ?
by Timothy Murphy
I took a disk out of one computer, and put it in another
(more precisely, I took out the Utrabay hard disk from a ThinkPad T20
and put it in a ThinkPad T23)
and now I am told there is no sound because
"Device /dev/dsp does not exist".
How exactly does one ensure that this device is created?
There seems to be a rule in /etc/udev/rules.d/
KERNEL=="dsp*", MODE="0660"
I take it this just says that if /dev/dsp is created
it should have mode 0660?
I googled quite extensively for "fedora udev dsp"
and came across a large number of queries
and a few answers which I tried without success.
Several referred to "alsaconf" which does not seem to be available in FC-5.
I seem to have modules running which should create /dev/dsp ,
as shown by the partial lsmod list below.
I'd be very grateful for a solution to this conundrum:
how do I create /dev/dsp, and why has it not been created for me?

Incidentally, is there any way of re-starting the sound system
apart from re-booting?
Why can one not say "system sound restart"?

Disabling hardware detection
by Jacques B.
I know you can disable hardware detection, but can't find how to do
it. Once FC5 has properly booted up and recognized your existing
hardware (and hence the config files are ok) can you not disable
hardware detection to speed up booting? If so, how is that done in
FC5? I haven't added hardware in quite some time. And if I do, I can
simply re-enable it.
Thanks,
Jacques B.

ATI 8.28.8 mplayer xv crash
by William John Murray
Hello all,
I have discovered that since updating ATI drivers (3 weeks
ago?)
mplayer always crashes my machine if the xv video out display is used.
In my xorg.conf I have a line in "device"
"VideoOverlay" "on"
If I comment it out I get no xv, and no crash.
This is with a Radeon Mobility 300 driver
kmod-fglrx-8.28.8-1.2.6.17_1.2174_FC5
and
xorg-x11-drv-fglrx-8.28.8-1.lvn5
It used to work, with older drivers.
Has anyone a solution to this?
Thanks,
Bill
