BIOS and GRUB haywire
by Thufir
I had difficulty installing a package (Sylpheed-Claws), which broke
some dependancies for X Windows beyond my ability to repair. So, I
did a fresh install of FC5. This time, however, I opted to have grub
install not to the MBR but to /dev/hda. This was a critical error on
my part, which, I think, led to some serious problems.
After the fresh install I ran yum update, useing the anaconda-type
interface to install Sylpheed-Claws, which worked very well, better
than yum or even yum extender. (Nothing broke.)
I then edited /home/hosts and ran "service xinetd restart" and
"service network restart", then rebooted. On reboot the screen was
filled with "GRUB", at least one hundred times, but not an infinite
loop. I rebooted, and got a message about no floppy in drive A,
except that there's no floppy drive. There's hda and hdb, plus a
CD-ROM and CD-RW, but no floppy.
I rebooted again, but am now just getting a blank screen. It took me
a bit to recall that this computer used the "del" key to bring up the
BIOS settings, I'd been pressing the function keys.
When the computer boots now I'm just getting a blank screen, totally
black. Disconnecting the monitor gives a message about "no signal",
it's not the monitor.
I can't get into the BIOS settings, no matter if I press "del" or not.
The lights indicate that two CD-ROM drives are being accessed,
repeatedly, in a loop, but putting a bootable CD into either drive
doesn't result in anything happening.
My conjecture is that it's related to grub, as it's a boot problem,
and some sort of interplay with the BIOS settings. Is this a hardware
problem? I removed the battery for a bit, but that had no result.
thanks,

PLEASE HELP (openswan ipsec) (+)
by SERGIE
I have got two linux boxes with fc5 on it. one has a static external IP,
another one is connected via cisco and uses address mapping - from the
external cisco IP to a "fake" internal.
How do I set up a net-to-net connection?
Example conf:
conn net-to-net
left=212.220.1.2 # Local vitals
leftsubnet=192.0.2.128/29 #
leftid=(a)xy.example.com #
leftrsasigkey=0s1LgR7/oUM... #
leftnexthop=%defaultroute # correct in many situations
right=212.220.1.1 # Remote vitals
rightsubnet=10.0.0.0/24 #
rightid=(a)ab.example.com #
rightrsasigkey=0sAQOqH55O... #
rightnexthop=%defaultroute # correct in many situations
auto=start # authorizes but doesn't start this
# connection at startup
But whike speaking with .2 IP, it actually statically maps to 172.x.x.x
address of linux box. It is possible to send data from mapped linux, and the
packets come out with normal 212.220.1.2 IP (mapped back).
OpenSwan IPSec however, according to logs, somehow discovers 172.x.x.x address
and refuses to negotiate....

FC5 - Eclipse with Sun Java
by Mark Eggers
Make sure that you have Sun's java and tool chain in your path before
the GNU Java and tool chain.
You can do that in /etc/profile (I keep this under RCS control) with the
following:
pathmunge /opt/jdk1.5.0_08/bin/java
I also add JAVA_HOME and JRE_HOEE environment variables for Tomcat.
If you do not want to do this, you can specify the option on the command
line.
From the documentation under Eclipse runtine options:
-vm <path to java executable> (Executable, Main)
when passed to the Eclipse executable, this option is used to locate the
Java VM to use to run Eclipse. It must be the full file system path to
an appropriate Java executable. If not specified, the Eclipse executable
uses a search algorithm to locate a suitable VM. In any event, the
executable then passes the path to the actual VM used to Java Main using
the -vm argument. Java Main then stores this value in eclipse.vm
I prefer changing the system path. That way all programs will run under
the same Java VM.
In addition, you might want to link /opt/jdk1.5.0_08 to /opt/java and use:
pathmunge /opt/java
instead.
This will allow easy system-wide modification of the Java VM just by
changing links. You can test other virtual machines just by pointing
the link at a different distribution.

folder icons missing
by ron
Hi,
While configuring a Konqueror file management profile, I seem to have
wiped out all my folder icons. They show up using nautilus. The
.directory files are missing. They should contain:
[Desktop Entry]
Icon=folder_flat
I need a script to replace the missing .directory desktop configure files.
How come Konqueror in the root account displays the folder icon
correctly with these files missing?
One other thing I have noticed. When logging out of the root account
with all applications closed, just as the screen blanks, a konqueror
window full of folder icons briefly flashes on screen.
Anyone know why, and how to fix this?
Any help will be appreciated.

Changing IP address on Fedora 4
by Philip Mark Donaghy
I've read many posts on the internet about the problems related to
changing IP address. We changed the IP on a Fedora 4 system now we are
unable to start httpd. I've looked for references to the old IP
everywhere. And the error_log does not tell me anything. Is there a
way to get more information from httpd?
Thank you,

KDE pop-ups (wall, write) (+)
by SERGIE
Hey guys,
I have enabled the local chat service in kcontrol (in description in says it
allows to listen write and wall and other messages from users and programs.)
In earlier versions of kde after running "wall something" a window appeared
stating that the message received. Window had name "kwrited/1" or
something...
Now however no windows opened, and even in konsole no messages pinted. "mesg"
is everywhere "y".
Now got KDE 3.5.4-0.1.fc5.
I have also noticed that runnnig who in KDE displayed two my users - my logon
and that kwrited listener.... What can I do?? Help!!
on /dev/tty* (consoles) everything works well.
on /dev/pts/2 (konsole, gnome-terminal) the problem is what I described.,,

help interpreting dmesg output
by Ian Malone
Hi,
I was using dvd::rip to scan the volume level of a set of vob files
on a hard disc. The following dmesg is from the second time I tried
it. Progress got to about 20% (very quickly, I assume the file had
been cached), then finished. This turned up on the console:
Message from syslogd@atlas at Tue Sep 5 15:23:55 2006 ...
atlas kernel: Oops: 0000 [#4]
followed by registers and a call trace. Something very similar
happened when I tried to cat the file to /dev/null. After
repeating this a couple of times I cleared the cache by copying
another large file to /dev/null which seemed to eliminate the
problem.
The dmesg output is below. What I'd like to know is whether this
looks like a hardware problem, a filesystem problem or simply a
bug somewhere. Thanks for your time.
