F8 NetworkManager & WPA2 PSK
by Bernd Bartmann
Hi,
I just installed Fedora 8 on my DELL Latitude D620 with Intel WLAN
card and so far everything is looking really good besides that I can't
get a connection to my WLAN access point.
The AP is an Linksys WRT54GL, the ESSID is set to hidden and it has
WPA2 PSK enabled. I've no problem connecting from WinXP
In Fedora 8 I enabled the services NetworkManager &
NetworkManagerDispatcher (BTW: Why are these services not enabled by
default?). After logging in into GNOME I see the NetworkManager tray
icon, click on it and select "Connect to an other wireless network".
It then asks me to enter the ESSID and after that I can select the
auth type, but there is no option for "WPA2 PSK". It offers me "WPA
PSK" and "WPA & WPA2 Enterprise". What do I have to do to get get
working WLAN connection with WPA2 PSK?
Thanks in advance,
Bernd.

Hi all,
I just upgraded my F7 box to F8 via the dvd. So far, so good.

F8: Cannot log in with home directory on LUKS partition
by Nothus Infelix
I used F7 with my home directory on an encrypted LUKS partition for
some time. Today, I blew away my root partition and installed F8 on it.
Now, I can't log in with my user account. Whether logging in graphically
or on the console, the system complains that /home/user can't be found.
The console will log me in with / as my home directory, and kdm offers
to do the same but cancels the login if I say no.
Odder still, once I'm logged in, bash has no problem finding my home
directory. If I do cd ~ (as user) or cd ~user (as root), I'm put right
in to my home directory.
Here's the relevant partitions:
crypttab:
home_crypt /dev/sda5 none
fstab:
/dev/mapper/home_crypt /home/user ext3 rw,noatime 0 0
And here's the ls -l of /home:
drwx------ 45 user user 4096 2007-11-09 13:59 user
Like I said above, the partition is mounted correctly at boot time and
the files are accessible to my user, and even bash resolves ~ correctly.
It looks like the problem is just in login. Any thoughts?

Summary of issues with clean install F8 in Dell D610
by Mike C
I am summarising the issues I have had with an F8 install using the
DVD iso in a Dell D610 laptop.
1) The install would not boot until a suggestion to add some
parameters to the kernel line as per
http://smolts.org/wiki/System/Dell_Inc./Latitude_D620 was done. This
allowed the install to continue through to a successfull first boot
although there were strange kernel messages during boot:
The same kernel messages appear in /var/log/messages as
"Nov 9 17:37:27 localhost kernel: Uhhuh. NMI received for unknown reason a1
on CPU 0.
Nov 9 17:37:27 localhost kernel: You have some hardware problem, likely on
the PCI bus.
Nov 9 17:37:27 localhost kernel: Dazed and confused, but trying to continue"
Subsequent boots are no different if the parameters mentioned above are used.
2) When I logged into KDE I had multiple kde crash handler messages
which came from the sound system. I had to turn off sound altogether
in kde control centre although amarok will play just fine. I have
reported this at
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=373881
3) I can manually start the wpa_supplicant daemon using "service
wpa_supplicant start" as root and this gives a good wireless
connection with wpa/psk, and I can collect an ip address with
dhclient. However I cannot get the wpa_supplicant daemon to start at
boot time. I tried the f7 trick of changing the startup sequence
number from 12 to 09 in /etc/init.d/wpa_supplicant but this made no
difference. I could of course add these commands to /etc/rc.local but
it would be nice to be able to start the daemon at boot with chkconfig
wpa_supplicant on. Once the supplicant has started then the wireless
connection is solid and works fine.
Other than these I have not found a problem! However I would have
hoped to have had a smoother start to using F8!
If anyone has any suggestions as to a workaround for any of these
issues I would be grateful.
I would imagine there are quite a few Dell D610 laptops around so
these issues may well be seen by others with this machine.

I would like Just a bit of advice about Fc8?
by Bill Case
Hi all;
I should know but I haven't gotten it clear in my mind. I am going to
download Fc8 in the next couple of days and I am not sure whether to go
for i386 or x86_64?
I have an AMD Athlon 64 x 2 Dual-Core processor on a ASUS M2NPV-VM
motherboard on a desktop with a small household LAN . I am not heavy
user of data bases etc. I am mainly a SOHO type user, with ordinary one
person requirements. I.e. OpenOffice, Firefox etc.
Previously I have been told (maybe here, maybe somewhere else) that I
will get better usage as i386 until the applications for x86_64 are in
better shape. I have been watching the to-and-fro-ing regarding i386
and x86_64 on this list regarding Fc7 over the last few months.
So, I am just looking for a bit of advice about which would be the most
appropriate for me, and people like me, to install; Fc8_i386 or Fc8_x64?

F8: Sound only through PC speakers
by Braden McDaniel
Since installing Fedora 8, I'm getting sound only through my PC speaker.
Well, almost. In the Soundcard Detection app, the test emits sound
through my normal speakers (which are plugged into an Audigy2 Value). So
apparently the system knows about the card and is capable of using it.
But aside from this, all sound I've tried to emit (desktop sound
effects, Rhythmbox) comes through the PC speaker.
What do I need to twiddle to make things work right?

Xine DVD playback only as root
by Craig Preston
I have Xine installed in Fedora 8. DVD playback only works if you launch it
as root. If you try and play a dvd as a regular user, it says the source is
encrypted and cant play the movie. I have installed libdvdcss along with all
the other dvd codecs. Any way to play a movie as a regular user? or is this
how it is?
(PS Totem is the same)
