OT: Cloud Operating System

Forecast: Xcerion Clouds the OS Horizon, Fuzzes Google, Microsoft Out of
Picture
By Darryl K. Taft

Opinion: A Swedish startup with big-name backers touts its vision of a
cloud operating system—something that Microsoft and Google have yet to
show clearly.
When it comes to talk about computing in "the cloud," my thinking on the
subject is, well, cloudy. I know companies like Google and Microsoft are
working on getting there, and Salesforce.com is basically cloud central.
But nobody's achieved this overall strategy of building out a back-end
infrastructure to support an extensive network of services residing out
on the Web. So, even though I'm not from Missouri, my attitude about
this cloud stuff has been "show me."

Adding a printer to OpenOffice
by Frank Cox
I want to automatically create a .ps file from a html file using a script on
this FC6 machine.
It seems to me that OpenOffice should fit this bill as it can load a html file
and print to a PostScript file. However, doing this automatically from the
commandline is becoming a challenge.
I thought I might be able to set up a printer using spadmin that would simply
print to a file, then use a command like:
ooffice -pt textfileprinter document.html
Unfortunately, I have run into a roadblock here in that, on my installation of
OpenOffice, when I run /usr/lib/openoffice.org2.0/program/spadmin and select
"new printer" the options "Add a printer" (and "Import printers from a
StarOffice intallation", though this one is not relevant) are greyed out and
the only selections that I can make are "Connect a fax device" or "Connect a
PDF converter".
So how can I add a printer to OpenOffice that will print to a Postscript file?

I'm running dovecot under CentOS 4.4. I like more stability and less
volatility for my server than FC provides. The "customization" is
required since I only want dovecot to listen for IMAP/POP connections on
my internal LAN. Yes, these ports are blocked on my external NIC but I
like the idea that dovecot doesn't accept connections from an external
address. I also vaguely remember that it complained for some reason I
didn't specify just the internal network. Unfortunately, that was long
enough ago that I don't recall the exact complaint.
Dovecot on my server is:
[root@fraud etc]# rpm -q dovecot
dovecot-0.99.11-4.EL4
It looks like 1.1 is available for FC6. From "yum info dovecot":
Available Packages
Name : dovecot
Arch : i386
Version: 1.0
Release: 1.1.rc15.fc6
Size : 1.5 M
Repo : updates
Summary: Dovecot Secure imap server

Dave

New UPS, can't find its device?
by Gene Heskett
Greetings;
FC6 system, uptodate as of an hour ago.
My old ups has been missing power bumps, causing resets, but its battery
is fresh and good, so I popped for a new Belkin F6C1500-TW-RK
When I plugged its usb cable into a usb2.0 hub, I got this in dmesg:
usb 3-3.4.4: new low speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 8
usb 3-3.4.4: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
hiddev96: USB HID v1.11 Device [Belkin Belkin UPS] on
usb-0000:00:02.2-3.4.4
That last 'device' I assume I'd find in /proc.
However, when I do an lsusb -v|grep -A56 'Bus 003 Device 008', this falls
out:
Bus 003 Device 008: ID 050d:0751 Belkin Components

And, apparently udev is at work as I have two new devices in the /dev
directory that showed up when I plugged the usb cable from it into the
hub:
crw------- 1 root root 254, 24 Mar 5 16:50 usbdev3.8_ep00
crw------- 1 root root 254, 25 Mar 5 16:50 usbdev3.8_ep81
The ups is powered up, so it seems like I should be able to cat that
puppy, but:
[root@coyote Bulldog]# cat /dev/usbdev3.8_ep00
cat: /dev/usbdev3.8_ep00: No such device or address
rinse lather repeat for the _ep81 address:
There are not any /dev/ttyUSB* devices beyond the one associated with a
pl2303 cable that's plugged in also. The instructions from Belkin to
install their monitoring software says the device it is going to use must
be present before running the installer. Am I not building enough
modules in my 2.6.20+rds custom kernel or what?
Thanks all.

FC6 vs FC6 respin? how to tell?
by Robert P. J. Day
i'm sure there's a trivial answer to this but i was just handed an
unlabelled DVD, allegedly of the FC6 respin. short of comparing some
RPM versions on the DVD, is there an obvious way to tell that this is
the respin and not the original FC6? thanks.

is $FCBASE/core is the core repo? my mirrored repo is mirrored using
reposync instead of rsync (therefore, I only have the RPMs .. other
stuff in the hierachy are not downloaded) ... do i need to add some
more stuff into FCBASE?
