FC6 Java installation problem
by fyzyk007
Hi,
I wanted to install Java (jdk-1_5_0_10-linux-i586.bin) following the
instructions on FedoraFaq pages (http://www.fedorafaq.org/).
During the last installation point:
" yum localinstall /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i586/java-1.5.0-sun-* "
i have got a message:
"Package java-1.5.0-sun-fonts-1.5.0.10-2jpp.i586.rpm is not signed"
and the installation did not get successful.
I do not know what it means "..NOT signed" or if there are some problems
somewhere else?
Cheers,
Jaroslav

Couldn't agree with you more. To me that means configuring services the
way most people will need them.

That's just it. Probably 99% of all Linux installs don't entail
configuring the system as a true mail server. The FC and RHEL approach
means *MOST* users don't have to edit a complex config file.

Ask their mail server admin. They have no business running their own
mail server.

When I set up dovecot I had to edit /etc/dovecot.conf before it worked:
diff dovecot.conf dovecot.conf.centos

While the file is easy to understand, knowing what to enable or not
enable and why isn't. Should we have a dovecot configuration GUI?
> If every program is a special case, few people

Agreed. That means it absolutely makes sense to install sendmail such
that the typical user doesn't have to understand how to configure it to
be secure.
How long are you going to keep insisting on something that very few
people need or want? Most people don't run a true mail server. They
connect to either their ISP's or their employer's mail server. They
don't want to have to know how to secure sendmail nor even how to enable
or disable it.
I can think of quite a few other system configuration tasks that I would
rather see Red Hat or the community put resources into over expending
effort on some kind of GUI sendmail configuration tool that most users
will never use and those who need to configure sendmail will ignore
because they know they need to edit sendmail.cf to correctly configure
it for their particular needs (e.g., filters, RBLs, etc.).

Multihead video cards?
by Knute Johnson
Does anybody have any multhead video cards running under Fedora or
any other Linux? I'm in the need of between 5 and 10 video outputs
for a project that is coming up and I would like to run it under
Linux. I know that Color Graphics used to make 4 and 8 port cards
and had drivers for them but they don't any more.
Thanks,

udevtrigger absent
by Aaron Konstam
udevtrigger is not available in FC5 and I suspect is not available
Fedora versions. So restarting udev can't be done with udevtrigger on
those Fedora versions.

Cached Swap?
by Mike McCarty
Ok, I asked before, what can "cached swap" possibly be, besides
an oxymoron. I have this line from top:
Swap: 524120k total, 133360k used, 390760k free, 61148k cached
I got the reply that this is not "cached swap", but just "cache".
However,
# cat /proc/meminfo | head
MemTotal: 248088 kB
MemFree: 7828 kB
Buffers: 4612 kB
Cached: 58268 kB
SwapCached: 66212 kB
Active: 181632 kB
Inactive: 10964 kB
HighTotal: 0 kB
HighFree: 0 kB
LowTotal: 248088 kB
So I ask: What is SwapCached?
Mike

Eveyone,
I found this entry in the changelog for FC1; so, I'm not sure about
the worry for the timezone data being wrong. It looks like the plan

Why does FC6 client become unresponsive during NFS write operations?
by Nick Thompson
My FC6 desktop client becomes unresponsive every 15-30 seconds for 5-15
seconds during long NFS write operations. My installation is up-to-date as of
this morning. This occurs with both an FC4 NFS server and another NFS server
I have running nfs-utils. I can't see any issues in nfsstat on the client:

How to add /sbin to useable paths on FC5
by Nigel Henry
I have a problem when compiling a library. I am upgrading Aldrin, a music app.
The latest version needs a library that used to be integrated in Aldrin, but
now needs to be installed separately. The library "libzzub" doesn't seem to
be available for FC5, at least not in extras, or freshrpms.
This library is built using scons, but when I su to root to do a "scons
install" it insists on running ldconfig, which it can't as it's not
calling /sbin/ldconfig, and lunches out saying there's a problem.
I had a look in /etc/profiles, and I'm sure on an earlier version of FC, I
added /sbin to the paths, but FC5 seems to be a bit different.
What do I need to do, so that it is not necessary to call ldconfig
as /sbin/ldconfig?
/etc/profiles on my FC5 install is below.
# /etc/profile
# System wide environment and startup programs, for login setup
# Functions and aliases go in /etc/bashrc
pathmunge () {
if ! echo $PATH | /bin/egrep -q "(^|:)$1($|:)" ; then
if [ "$2" = "after" ] ; then
PATH=$PATH:$1
else
PATH=$1:$PATH
fi
fi
}
# ksh workaround
if [ -z "$EUID" -a -x /usr/bin/id ]; then
EUID=`id -u`
UID=`id -ru`
fi
# Path manipulation
if [ "$EUID" = "0" ]; then
pathmunge /sbin
pathmunge /usr/sbin
pathmunge /usr/local/sbin
fi
# No core files by default
ulimit -S -c 0 > /dev/null 2>&1
if [ -x /usr/bin/id ]; then
USER="`id -un`"
LOGNAME=$USER
MAIL="/var/spool/mail/$USER"
fi
HOSTNAME=`/bin/hostname`
HISTSIZE=1000
if [ -z "$INPUTRC" -a ! -f "$HOME/.inputrc" ]; then
INPUTRC=/etc/inputrc
fi
export PATH USER LOGNAME MAIL HOSTNAME HISTSIZE INPUTRC
for i in /etc/profile.d/*.sh ; do
if [ -r "$i" ]; then
. $i
fi
done
unset i
unset pathmunge
What does "pathmunge" mean?
Thanks for any help with this problem.
Nigel.
