I have to disagree with you. I configured my mail server based on
comments in sendmail.cf for basic functionality. I tried various
blacklists when that seemed to be the answer to spam based on
instructions I easily found through google. I switched to using DSpam
locally as a sendmail filter.
I have the O'Reilly Sendmail book on my bookshelf but have yet to open
it since I haven't needed to. Everything I needed to do to set up my
mailserver was either explained clearly in comments in sendmail.cf or
could be easily found with a quick search. To do *MOST* things that
*NORMAL* users of sendmail need to do is easy. sendmail also provides
the ability to configure a huge amount more if you need to but most
people don't.
Instead of a new subject we need to start a collection to buy a dead
horse for people on this list who won't let go of their pet complaints.
The current way sendmail is configured by default for Fedora is
absolutely correct. If you can't figure out how to enable it as a real
mail server, you have no business running a mail server (and perhaps you
should consider a more appropriate OS than Fedora... say Microsoft's Bob).
Cheers,
Dave

Can't get NetworkManager to configure ntp
by Sam Varshavchik
I'm trying to convert from static host configurations to dhcp. My
understanding is that on dhcp clients I should remove my ntp server from
ntp.conf, with the understanding that when the network interface is set up
by dhcp, the dhcp-provided option setting will be used by
NetworkManager/dhclient to add the network's ntp server to ntp.conf.
Everything works except for this part. When I plug the cable into the
network port, the machine gets its IP address from the dhcp server, gets the
nameservers from the dhcp server, but for some reason ntp.conf remains
untouched.
My dhcpd.conf reads:
host t43 {
hardware ethernet 00:11:25:B1:40:60;
fixed-address 192.168.0.15;
}
# This is the dhcp client I'm configuring
subnet 192.168.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
option subnet-mask 255.255.255.0;
deny unknown-clients;
option routers 192.168.0.5;
option domain-name-servers 192.168.0.5;
option ntp-servers 192.168.0.5;
. . .
When I plug it in, the machine gets its IP address, router IP, and DNS ip,
but ntp.conf does not get updated.
How do I debug this? I tried stracing the NetworkManager process, but I
cannot see it forking/cloning/execing dhclient and dhclient-script.

Status of OpenOffice.org and OpenXML (MSO 2007)
by P Jones
Hi all;
I've been poking around this afternoon looking for info on OOo and
OpenXML interoperability, and specifically how it will/will not be
incorporated into future Fedora releases. I see Novell has already
made a translator available for their SLED and Windows versions of OOo
(go to novell.com and look in the download section if you want to see
them), but I can't seem to find a license... Maybe it's on the ISO
somewhere, haven't downloaded it yet.
Anyway, just curious if anyone knows more than I do... Maybe one of
the developers knows what's happening?
Thanks,
-P

Beryl update broke my Beryl :)
by Kevin B
Hi
I have Beryl [from Extras] running on FC6 with latest Nvidia drivers
from Nvidia.com.
Yesterday yum reported new packages including Beryl, Beryl-Manager etc
so I updated them. Now on login, Gnome starts to load the desktop and
Beryl -Manager launches
and kills X and puts me back to GDM logon. I renamed my .gnome2 and
.beryl?? folders
and now I can get back into Gnome. Manually running Beryl-Manager from
the Gnome
session kicks me out again. Logs don't show anything relevent.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks :)

File-name encodings and unzip
by Colin Paul Adams
Hello,
I have a file which I got from a zip file, unzipped with the unzip
command.
If I do ls on the directory from an X11 terminal or from the console,
I see the name as xgespr?ch.xml.
If I use emacs to view the directory, instead of the ?, I see a
lower-case a-umlaut (which I know is the intended name).
>From which I tentatively conclude that the file-name encoding is
ISO-8859-1, rather than UTF-8.
Are file-names supposed to be encoded on Linux as UTF-8 or ISO-8859-1,
or is it configurable?
This system is FC5, but a more general answer would be appreciated if
possible.
Also, how does unzip interpret file names? I cannot see an options to
allow trans-coding of the names to UTF-8 (I'm assuming the directory of
the zip file is encoded as ISO-8859-1, but again I don't know - I'm
trying to find out from the originator of the zip file what the
file-name encoding is on her system).

I have installed FC6 x86_64 on my new system. I would like to know how I can

It fails with these errors:

Evolution and Firefox aborting
by Todd Simi
Hi,
I'm running FC6 and am fully updated.
Using Evolution, the program completely halts and and display the
Bug Buddy send screen, which it then says the program doesn't use.
This only seems to happen when sending an email, but not all the time.
I haven't been able to associate with anything, except maybe only when
replying.
Also, Firefox just completely closes occasionally which seems to only be
associated with streaming video. I'm using he mplayer plug-in.
I was wondering if anyone has any idea what this might be before I bugzilla
it.
Thanks
Todd
