Missing configuration files for Alpine in Fedora 8, 9
by Michael Hannon
Greetings. I've been seeing some strange behavior with the "alpine"
package in Fedora 8 and 9 recently.
The gist of it is that there don't seem to be any configuration files
for alpine, even though RPM lists them.
Here's an example from a Fedora 8 system. I get the same thing on a
Fedora 9 system.
[root@localsys ~]# grep alpine /var/log/yum.log
Oct 27 16:58:27 Installed: alpine-2.00-1.fc8.i386
No complaints from the installer. OK, what got installed?
[root@localsys ~]# rpm -ql alpine
/etc/pine.conf
/etc/pine.conf.fixed
/usr/bin/alpine
/usr/bin/pico
/usr/bin/pilot
/usr/bin/rpdump
/usr/bin/rpload
/usr/share/doc/alpine-2.00
/usr/share/doc/alpine-2.00/LICENSE
/usr/share/doc/alpine-2.00/README
/usr/share/doc/alpine-2.00/tech-notes.txt
/usr/share/man/man1/alpine.1.gz
/usr/share/man/man1/pico.1.gz
/usr/share/man/man1/pilot.1.gz
/usr/share/man/man1/rpdump.1.gz
/usr/share/man/man1/rpload.1.gz
That shows not one but two configuration files in /etc/.
On the other hand, there are no such configuration files:
[root@localsys ~]# ls -ld /etc/*pine*
ls: cannot access /etc/*pine*: No such file or directory
Maybe something's wrong with the installation? RPM doesn't think so:
[root@localsys ~]# rpm --verify alpine
[root@localsys ~]#
This is significant because the alpine binary seems to have been
compiled with /usr/local as the default location for browsers, for
instance. I won't repeat the output here, but try:
strings /usr/bin/alpine | grep netscape
or
strings /usr/bin/alpine | grep lynx
I suppose this could be "fixed" by changing individual .pinerc files,
but that seems to be treating the symptom, not the problem.
Note that I have seen a directory:
/etc/alpine
on some systems, and on one system running Scientific Linux I do find a
file:
/etc/alpine/pine.conf
On the Fedora systems that I've examined, either the /etc/alpine
directory is missing altogether, or it is there but empty.
Is this a local problem, or are others seeing it too?
Thanks.

FC9 : Pb with sata_via adaptor and sata disk
by Jean-Philippe Battu
Hello
On my linux box, I use a pci adaptor to provide sata port because my
motherboard doesn't
have serial ata port. My sata adaptor is a :
# lspci
...
02:0b.0 RAID bus controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT6421 IDE RAID
Controller (rev 50)
...
#
When the system boots, the sata disk is well recognized. I can use fdisk
and mkfs to build
a filesystem without any problems
But, when I try to mount this filesystems, I can see these errors in the
/var/log/messages
kernel: EXT3-fs error (device sdc2): ext3_check_descriptors: Inode table
for group 4 not in group (block 99331)!
kernel: EXT3-fs: group descriptors corrupted!
If I use mkfs.ext3 command instead mkfs, I can't see this message but only :
kernel: VFS: Can't find ext3 filesystem on dev sdc1
fdisk -l /dev/sdc gives me:
Disk /dev/sdc: 1000.2 GB, 1000204886016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 121601 cylinders

/dev/sdc2 60790 121601 488472390 83 Linux
this disk has been worked well on another machine. Is there any problem with
the sata_via kernel modules:

IPV6 NETFILTER
by potat0
HI,
im trying to build an IPV6 router on my lab using F6 (kernel 2.6). Unlike in IPV4, i can't set forwarding policy per interface in IPV6. Some articles stated that i have to use ipv6 netfilter / ip6tables.
so, im trying first with these lines:
#ip6tables -A FORWARD -i eth0 -o eth1 -j ACCEPT
#ip6tables -A FORWARD -i eth1 -o eth0 -j ACCEPT
they don't work..
Any suggestions would be very helpful to me!
cheers,
FAZZETA

Newbie: Fresh install of FC9 - Boot hangs after login.
by Jonathan Hartzell
Newbie... My first post! XP (SP3) user, and one of the lucky ones with
no complaints. I'm drawn to the overall enthusiasm and philosophy of
all of you who've embarked on the Linux system adventure and am looking
forward to joining your ranks... but I seem to have stumbled in taking
my first step!
I've taken the best care I can in downloading the full distribution of
FC9, checking the integrity of the download, and checking the integrity
of the resulting DVD. Ran the graphical install (very user-friendly),
to sdb to avoid even a remote possibility of any MBR conflicts (XP is
exclusively on sda) with plenty of free space on sdb (319 gigs). All
went smoothly...
However on the first reboot (booting sdb), I continued to follow the
instructions, only to find that the Login process hung. Do I suck as a
Newbie, or has anyone else encountered this kind of problem?
Note: This being my first shot at Linux-related stuff, I don't have
anything but XP at this point to work with, and I won't have the usual
Linux type tools that most of you have who've simply upgraded to FC9.
I'm hoping one of you can tell me that the fault is mine, rather than
the installer DVD, as I'm concerned that I may not have the tools to
get myself back on the road. Sure would welcome some guidance out of
this apparent dead end!

Fedora 9/10 and NVIDIA ?
by Kevin Kempter
Hi All;
I'm considering the purchase of a Dell 64bit laptop with an NVIDIA
video card.
- Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme Edition X9100 3.06GHz, 1067MHZ, 6M L2 Cache
Dual Core (224-3154)
- 1GB NVIDIA Quadro FX 3700M Mobile Precision M6400 Covet (320-7518)
Anyone have any thoughts per Fedora 9/10 compatibility, potential
issues, gotcha's, etc ?
Thanks in advance.

32 or 64-bit?
by John Aldrich
I'm about to the point of having to wipe and reinstall (except for some data
folders) my personal machine. I'm currently on FC6, but I'm looking at either
installing F9 or F10.
I use it more as a desktop machine, but I access it from remote via SSH and
VNC. I also use a DDNS name to access the machine.
My question is this: Is F9/F10 (Beta) ready for full 64-bit for a desktop
machine? I've got an AMD64 CPU and I'd love to use it to the full potential,
but only if it's ready for prime-time.

File Manager super User gone???
by Rene Cusson
Hello,
Just installed Fedora 9 KDE desktop. Everything was fine untill i updated all the packages. Now there is no access
to file manager super user in the menu area. Is it hiding somewhere that i dont know about? How do you
become the super user when using dolphin? I googled this and others are having the same problem, but can't seem to find the answer.
Not looking for the su in the terminal. Want to be able to create folders in root. The create menu is disabled because i am not SU.
