These are

preparing for F10
by Fred Silsbee
when I installed F9, I encountered an equivocal question in the grub section ......something like this:
what HD do you want to boot to?
I must have given the wrong answer but did command line grub commands and straightened it out.
I have
(1) sda1 with XP Prof and the MBR where the grub thing resides...right?
on boot, the first drive encountered is sda1
(2) sdb1 with F9
I am guessing the right answer would be (2)

Data Recovery:
by Jeff Maxwell
I had a problem with the install of Fedora 9 (Up grade from Fedora 8). I am attempting to use Fedora 9 Live to access my hard drive in order to recover any data - pictures, documents, etc.
It seems that Fedora 9 Live is unable to find my hard drive.
How do I get access to this data?
Or, if I simply attempt to install Fedora 9 (not upgrade from a prior version) will my data be left behind?
Thanks.

BBC iPlayer stopped working
by Mike Fleetwood
Hi,
About a week ago BBC iPlayer (http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/) stopped
working for me. By stopped I mean the embeded flash video player
within the web pages just don't appear. I was very close to when I
upgraded flash-plugin from 9.0.124.0 to 10.0.12.36 so I though that
might have been the cause. However I have since downgraded
flash-plugin and it still fails.
YouTube videos work OK.
This is on my desktop with Fedora 9 ix86 and updates applied.
Has anyone else in the UK seen this?
How do I start debugging this?
Thanks in advance,
Mike

Replace F9 Network Manager with old network initializer
by Dave Feustel
I just got the openSUSE 11 Bible and looked immediately for info on
NetworkManager, which I found on page 440. There is stated that NM is
primarily for wireless, while traditional network configuration should
be used for wired networks. Since I have a wired system, NM is probably
not right for me. What do I need to do to replace network manager with
the tradional method of configuring networks on F9?
>
(Note: so far as I have determined, Network Manager is not discussed at
all in the Fedora F9 Bible except for a note on page 19 saying that
NetworkManager is now the default for F9. Please correct me (with page
numbers) if I am wrong about that).
Thanks.

Spontaneous pulseaudio death
by Rick Stevens
Hi gang. I've recently been having spontaneous pulseaudio daemon deaths
occuring. The daemon just quits. There is a trace of it in
/var/log/messages:
Oct 20 13:27:45 prophead pulseaudio[9301]: shm.c: shm_open() failed: No
such file or directory
Oct 20 13:27:45 prophead pulseaudio[9301]: pstream.c: Failed to import
memory block.
Just curious if anyone else is experiencing this. It may be related to
a vpnc issue as it seems to happen after I've had to do a couple of
vpnc...vpnc-disconnect cycles, but I can't confirm that as yet.
Oh, yeah, this is a fully updated F8 machine with pulseaudio 0.9.8 and
vpnc 0.5.1. Yes, I know F8 is old, but I need Xen for a couple of
things and F9's dom0 for Xen is a no-go (says so in the release notes
and confirmed by actual attempts to use it).

KDE4 Save Session
by Patrick O'Callaghan
One configuration option in KDE4 is to restore a manually saved desktop
session, however there doesn't seem to be a way to actually save the
session in the first place. This used to exist in KDE3. Is there
something I'm missing or is it a bug?

Odd one for sure
by Gene Heskett
Greetings:
System is a 4 core phenom, 4GB ram, F8 uptodate but vanilla 2.6.27.3 SMP & PAE
kernel. However this will also take place when booted to the next to last F8
kernel, so I don't believe its kernel related.
I'm not sure if my system is haunted or not, but in the early hours of the
morning (it will be fine later), if I click on the kmenu icon to bring up
that selector, the selector comes up, but only after the screen is blanked
which is instantly, but it will flash back on every few seconds for about 200
milliseconds. If I then move the mouse and click on an empty location of the
screen, which kills the kmenu, it comes back to normal.
Does any one have a clue?
Thanks

I didn't know about the system-config-display command. I'll try that next
time.
What I did was modify my /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and changed the "NVIDIA" line
to "nv". It works for now so yay.
So I booted, and this time Fedora 9 found my correct resolution.
But next time I boot, Fedora may decide to lock me into 800X600
Would system-config-display help with my random 800X600 resolution problem?
Thanks
