Newbie issues installing switchdesk.

Hey! I'm a bit new to Linux - run Ubuntu at home and at school FC8. In class trying to get fedora core to switch from GNOME to KDE using switch desk I receive this: switchdesk KDE bash: switchdesk: command not found So I attempted an install. yum install switchdesk Setting up Install Process Parsing package install arguments No package switchdesk available. Nothing to do Again - I'm very new so I saw this suggestion and decided to try it - not sure of the difference. yum -y install switchdesk Setting up Install Process Parsing package install arguments No package switchdesk available. Nothing to do Really, I'm not sure what groupinstall does but that gives me: Warning: Group switchdesk does not exist. No packages in any requested group available to install or update ((I had used it on a classmates computer and he was able to get to KDE - I guess I'm not so lucky)) Really, I'm not sure where to go from here, every attempt of installation or moving on results in a missing dependency or something just not existing. I'm not getting much throughput on this, about 16Kbps at the moment. At this rate, I'll be unable to get the snapshot in the bag before leaving for North Carolina and a brief vacation. Hi, I've just installed Fedora 9 on my laptop, and unfortunately a few things are getting worse in Fedora. Network management has always been awkward on Fedora and with Fedora 9 it's getting much worse. 1. I have always edited the config files directly to get things working. And still have to ( it's just a straight forward wireless connection ). 2. NetworkManager is now the default on install, BUT... 2.1 NetworkManager does not give you a wireless connection when no user is logged in. 2.1.1 How am I going to run any network service, NTP, NFS, httpd, etc..... without a network? 2.1.2 How am I going to remotely administer my machines? 2.2 NetworkManager does not give you the ability to configure system wide networking services or policy. 2.3 NetworkManager does not have any decent documentation. 3. Try using WPA and DHCP at the same time. It's never worked in this or any previous Fedora. Yes, NM will do it, but that's no good because of the previously stated problems. the network service won't do it because it tries to run DHCP immediately after bringing up the interfaces...It SHOULD wait until wpa_supplicant has run and the interface is available for traffic before kicking off DHCP... GDM was functional, well behaved and stable in Fedora 8. I used it to log into other F8 machines locked away in difficult to get at racks. Fedora 9 has effectively removed that ability by shipping a GDM with gdmsetup. How many users depend on that functionality? I did, and won't be able to upgrade to F9 for any other machines. A suggestion... Use the fedora website/wiki to collect information about use cases. Find out what people depend on. Use that to provide a guarantee that functionality and usefulness won't go backwards. If it was ever setup, I'd tell you everything I do with my machines. Russell

Mystery of yum update

I am running Fedora-9 on two Thinkpads, a T23 and a T43. When I ran "yum update" on both this morning, the T43 updated the kernel to kernel-2.6.26.5-45.fc9.i686.rpm while the T23 did not update kernel-2.6.25.9-76.fc9.i686.rpm . Why didn't the T23 update? Is it just a question of the machines finding different repositories? Konqueror does not show my homepage when started (F9, kdebase-4.1.2-5.fc9.i386)

I have configured konqueror so it should start with my homepage (settings>Configure konqueror, setting "When konqueror starts" to "show my homepage"). Leaving the configure menu by OK button. But after exiting and restarting konqueror, this new controls are lost, and konqueror starts with "Show the introduction page". Getting these results after multiple trials. F10beta: SElinux problem with firefox and npviewer.bin

Hello I've just installed F10beta and it seams to be step forward. But I have problem with firefox and flash content in some web sites. there are these errors (Summary only): 2x SELinux is preventing npviewer.bin (nsplugin_t) "read" to ./profiles.ini (home_root_t). 2x SELinux is preventing npviewer.bin (nsplugin_t) "write" to /home/pali/.mozilla/firefox/me1qy2e6.default/.parentlock (home_root_t). 14x SELinux is preventing npviewer.bin (nsplugin_t) "write" to ./#SharedObjects (home_root_t). 1x SELinux is preventing npviewer.bin (nsplugin_t) "read" to ./43176123e8eb6e4cae1cae54f50effde-x86.cache-2 (home_root_t). 1x SELinux is preventing npviewer.bin (nsplugin_t) "write" to ./AssetCache (home_root_t). What does it mean? How can I solve it? Can I only disable this part of SElinux policy? Pavel

dual - head extended desktop

Hello guys, It is possible in Fedora 9 with ATI drivers to extend desktop to two monitor so i will have a big desktop and i can move windows from one monitor to second with having on each monitor different resolution? So far it was not working for me. Thanks! David

Lenovo ThinkPad T400: F9, F10b, or Wait for F10 final?

I just got a shiny new (OK - since they're black finish, they're not actually shiny <smile>) Lenovo ThinkPad T400 model 2765-T6U. I'm trying to decide if I should: 1) Load Fedora 9 on it until F10 comes out and then upgrade 2) Load the latest F10 build and "ride rawhide" for about 4 weeks 3) Just wait until F10 final gets here and live with the Win XP preload til then ...Obviously I'd prefer option 3 the least! Here's the catch: This new series ThinkPad has _both_ the notorious Intel e1000e Gig-e NIC (the hardware of which a certain recent kernel bug has taken a likening to eating) and the Intel IWL5001 series WiFi card. It also has ATI graphics. I'm thinking I will load F10b now, add the iwl5001 series firmware, patch to latest rawhide specs and then try not to cause a situation that destroys the NIC.
