CUPS "Unable to get printer status (Forbidden)!"

I'm trying to use a printer attached to a USB port on a remote machine, but I get the above message. I can access the computer in question with -------------------------------- [tim@alice ~]$ telnet 192.168.2.2 631 Trying 192.168.2.2... Connected to 192.168.2.2. Escape character is '^]'. -------------------------------- I suspect the problem is that the printer is not found, whatever name I give to it. I see -------------------------------- [Job 66] Unable to get printer status (Forbidden) -------------------------------- in /var/log/cups/error_log on the client machine. vlc-playing DVD won't display on external monitor

ok, as a followup to my previous post, i slapped f9 on my inspiron, then VLC and associated RPMs, popped in a DVD, it plays nicely on the laptop. then, connected an external (samsung WUXGA) flat-panel monitor via DVI, and the entire laptop display is reflected nicely on the monitor *except* for the actual DVD image in the VLC window -- that just shows up as blank, either in regular or fullscreen mode (in fullscreen mode, the entire external display is blank, even while the movie is playing on the laptop). i'm no expert at video so, somehow, the DVD image is not being passed out on DVI, while everything else is. thoughts? is there a VLC setting to tweak this? this is a dell inspiron 9200 so it's a fairly old system -- at least a couple years. but until now, running external displays off that DVI port has worked just fine. so why is the DVD video content being treated this way? rday

Retrieve F9 startup log after boot

F9 displays a startup log consisting of services started followed by status ([invariably [OK] ). But in the middle are ocasionally error messages (eg from privoxy ) which scroll by so fast that I am unable to read them. Is there any way to view the startup log as either a normal user or as root to see the error messages? Thanks.

Viewing pictures in Konqueror

FC8 Why is that in Konqueror file manager that you can see a few jpg pictures, instead your viewing the camera icons, I know about clicking on pictures and opening them to view, but I want to see the pictures without opening them.

Wireless communications.

Hi all, I just started using Fedora / linux and I am having an issue with wireless communication. I installed Fedora 8 on my laptop; I have installed all of the updates available to this point. I am using an old Dell Latitude Laptop with a cisco systems wireless card. It works fine with widows it just doesn't seem to want to connect when I log into Fedora. I am probably missing something but I don't know what it is. The error that I am getting when I try to activate the card is that it is an invalid argument (8b06). One of the things that I am not sure about is how do I choose the type of wireless security I am using? The cables side of the network system works fine. I am very familiar with wireless communications and I am pretty knowledgeable about the windows software but any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Bill Marcum

Icecast on Fedora core 9

Hi, I'm having trouble getting icecast to work on fedora core 9. I've editted the icecast.xml file and can get it to start but when I point my browser at 127.0.0.1:8000 I get nothing. I've stopped iptables and turned off selinux, but still no good. nmap -p8000 127.0.0.1 shows the port to be closed. Nay help or suggestions would be gratefully received. James

Why is FC9 mounting my media again?

After an update FC9 is mounting CDs again. I checked preferences, set for don't browse and don't play. This has been fixed for years, and now today it has started grabbing the media as soon as the drive is closed. Can someone tell me what config or prefs file has been "upgraded" this time? Installed Service Cannot Open Ports

I installed a service with open tcp ports. When the machine boots the service starts after the network is configured but I cannot connect to the ports. When I run this services from root it all works fine and can connect to the ports. Any ideas? Steve
