Need help. Problem with setgid on Fedora Core 9.
by Steven W. Orr
I upgraded from Core 4 to Core 9 (fresh install) and now my mailinglist
manager, mj2, won't work anymore. Here's the problem. In ~majordomo/bin, I
have all of the programs (written in perl) and all of the associated
wrappers. The wrappers are all owned by majordomo (owner and group) and
the appropriate ones also have setuid and setgid bits set. Unless I am
sudo'd to the majordomo account (103 in this case), the program does not
start because of a problem with setgid.
BTW, selinux is totally disabled.
528 > ~majordomo/bin/mj_shell
Insecure dependency in eval while running setuid at
/usr/lib/perl5/5.10.0/SelfLoader.pm line 54.
Compilation failed in require at
/usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.10.0/Term/ReadLine/Perl.pm line 63.
529 >
I did some experimenting and discovered that the setgid bit is not working. In
fact, I even went so far as to modify the code so that the wrapper was
installed setuid/setgid as root and I made the program do a setgid, setegid,
setresgid to 103, all to no avail. The error that I get back is EPERM, which in
the man page says:
The calling process is not privileged (does not have the
CAP_SETGID capability), and gid does not match the effective
group ID or saved set-group-ID of the calling process.
To recap, the fundamental problem is that I seem to no longer be able to
run setgid either as root or as the result of installing a program with
the setgid bit set. The software I'm using is actuallying looking to see
if the current group is the same as the saved group.
It doesn't matter if I run it as steveo or root. The only time it succeeds is
if I am su'd to majordomo.
If anyone can help me and help quickly, my server is now down, and I'd really
appreciate suggestions on what to do.
Is there something that needs to be done to allow setgid to succeed? AFAICT,
that's the only thing that's holding me up right now.

How is KDE4 supposed to be used ?
by linux guy
There is and has been a lot of grumbling about KDE4 from a number of
people including myself. On the other hand, some people think its
great.
I can't help but wonder if I am missing something on how its supposed to
be used. Is there a guide or website that has a little tutorial
somewhere ?
Thanks.

then every time you add or make changes and do 'save'. they should be saved.

true - not relevant, unless you change size of view and do not mind having
window come up different each time started. tho maybe not. kde has lost a
lot of features in kde3 to kde4.

and you will have to go back and re config everything all over.
as long as you are using thunderbird for email, why do you not use firefox
for web browser?
konq is a great local file browser, but i have never seen it work as well
as firefox. plus, konq does not have wide selection of addon and plugin
features as does firefox does.
to me, konq doing web browsing is like msbsos explorer doing browsing and
one more of kde's trying to act like msbsos.
one last thought, unrelated to your post, do you really need to hang an
8,249 bytes base64 cryptographic signature to each of your emails?
to authenticate your email, you could sign your email with an 8 character
key to keep things down.

Updating createrepo seems like the way better plan to me instead of that
workaround. Could you be so kind and tell me which createrepo version we
need a least to get a "proxy-friendly createro"? Or is the answer "just
use the latest and greatest" (host is a rhel5 or centos5)?

livna: could we have kmod-nvidia-2.6.26.6-49 for f8 ?
by linux guy
I am running the latest stable kernel for my Fedora 8 installation.
$ uname -a
Linux localhost.localdomain 2.6.26.6-49.fc8 #1 SMP Fri Oct 17 15:59:36
EDT 2008 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
I would like an nvidia driver for this kernel. It doesn't seem to be
available.
$ yum list kmod-nvidia-2.6.26*
Installed Packages
kmod-nvidia-2.6.26.5-28.fc8.i686 173.14.12-4.lvn8
installed
Available Packages
kmod-nvidia-2.6.26.3-14.fc8.i686 173.14.12-3.lvn8 livna
kmod-nvidia-2.6.26.3-14.fc8PAE.i686 173.14.12-3.lvn8 livna
kmod-nvidia-2.6.26.5-28.fc8PAE.i686 173.14.12-4.lvn8 livna
Could someone rectify this ?
I know that I could compile it from source as I used to do for every
kernel, but I'd like to reply on livna for this.
Thanks.

How to reset graphics driver to nv?
by Dennis Mattingly
I made a small system change, and now X-Windows doesn't start, and I only
get a command line login.
Any help that I can get with getting my system to graphical mode again would
help.
Description:
Sometimes my Fedora detects correct resolution at bootup. Other times it
doesn't, and forces me to 800X600. Well, I got tired of 800X600 resolution
so I went to menu System -> Administrator -> Display. One of the options
there had me running nv driver, so I selected "NVIDIA manufacturer" option
and pressed okay. Now Fedora always dumps me to command line.
Any advice?
Thanks

Re: TVtime and KWORLD PlusTV Analog lite PCI
by Yordanis Tornes Medina
I'm back, finally a get my KWORLD PlusTV Analog lite PCI working. Reading http://www.linuxtv.org/v4lwiki/index.php/Saa7134-alsa I set saa7134 file into /etc/modprobe.d/ with the following options:
options saa7134 card=59 tuner=56
install saa7134 /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install saa7134; /sbin/modprobe saa7134-alsa
see card=59 tuner=56, it is not my card number, but it work :-)
saa7134-alsa is registering my card as card -1, unless I set the line:
options saa7134-alsa index=1
at the end of the file /etc/modprobe.d/saa7134, and then saa7134-alsa register my card as card 1. I think that without options saa7134-alsa index=1 saa7134-alsa try to set my card as card 0, but it can't be because audio card 0 is the onboard audio card.
Get working TVtime with sound with /usr/bin/tvtime.sh like this:
#!/bin/sh
sox -r 32000 -w -t alsa hw:1,0 -t alsa hw:0,0 &
mpid=$!
tvtime
kill $mpid
Radio is working with Gnomeradio, but i need to plug my speakers into audio out of my TV card to get audio. I can't record, in gnomeradio/settings/mixer source don't show anythink and when I click record button in main interface I get the following error:
Could not set "line" as recording Source.
I will try with a script for gnomeradio like tvtime.sh to pass audio to my onboard audio card, it would work.
Now, gnomeradio is getting the following error:
lirc_init: No such file or directory
gnomeradio-Message: Could not start lirc!
I have lirc-lib-0.8.3-73_cvs20071109.fc8 and lirc-0.8.3-73_cvs20071109.fc8 installed, what configuration I must set, what is lirc_init?
Greetings

F9. Mouse over files fails to display file info with Konqueror
by Nigel Henry
On previous Fedora versions, and on other distros using KDE3, and Konqueror,
hovering the mouse over a file, or directory, would bring up a little popup,
and at the same time, the same info as on the popup would be shown on the
bottom bar of Konquerors window.
For example. At the moment I'm trying to resolve a Java problem, and there are
many directories, and files which are symlinks. The only way I can see where
the link is pointing to on F9, is to right click on the file/dir, and look in
the properties. Obviously this involves a lot of clicking, when you just want
to see where several directories symlinks are pointing to.
Is there anything I can configure on F9 to get the mouse over file/dir
behaviour, as is on KDE3.5's Konqueror?
Thanks for any help with this annoying problem.
Nigel.
btw. What is the little green LED type thingy at the bottom of Konquerors
window? It doesn't respond to the mouse.
