Re:YUM failures
by don vogt
I screwed up the commands a little on my previous
message I hate when that happens.
They should be
yum --exclude=xine-lib update
and
yum --enablerepo=livna update update
xine-lib-extras-nonfree xine-lib
I am not sure the order of the updat packages in the
last one makes a difference, but this is what I did (I
checked my bash history)

I had pretty much the same -problem.
I had livna disabled in the repo file.
I think what I did was the following.
I ran
yum update --excludepackage=xine-lib
To get all the other stuff out of the way.
Then I ran
yum --enablerepo=livna update xine-lib
xine-lib-extras-nonfree
and yum kept it all straight with no errors.
I think that xine-lib is a fedora package and
xine-lib-extras-nonfree is a livna package and you
have to give yum a chance to see bothe repos.
Hope that helps.

firefox won't launch
by Peter Lesterhuis
Hi,
In order to visit a secured website I tried to import my certificate. I
need to visit the website for my job. Until now I have to reboot into
Windows and I am getting tired of having to do that. I was issued to
download software from VerSign and then restart the browser. So I did.
Now firefox doesn't start at all.
I removed ff en then reinstalled, but it still won't lauch. Konqueror
does though.
Does anyone have a clue?

f8 and everex zonbu
by Jack Wallen
hello all. I have found myself attempting to rescue an everex laptop
with a via on board video card and atelheros wireless. so far I have
tried about every flavor of Linux I know with mixed results. either
the graphics are horrific (or, in the case of F8 do not work at all)
or the wireless doesn't work. I would like to install F8 but I can't
even get the video to work enough to run the live cd.
does anyone have any experience with getting F8 working on this
hardware? I've spent quite a bit of googling and the closest thing I
can come up with is openchrome (which doesn't seem to have been
updated recently.)
am I missing something?
thanks all

NetworkManager and a boot-time network connection in F8
by Wolfgang S. Rupprecht
Is there a way to configure NetworkManager to bring up the network at
boot time? I find it remarkable that this Linux program defaults to
treating a network connection as a service tied to a user. Shades of
the evil empire of the northwest. I'd like my laptop to send me cron
mail and keep synced with ntp whether I'm logged in on the console or
not.
Unfortunately wpa_supplicant is once again cranky in F8. Moving
wpa_supplicant to the S09 slot didn't get it all working, hence my
attempt to use NetworkManager.
(Sorry if this is a faq. Googling this list is nearly impossible
without some way to search by possting date and Fedora version.)

Fedora 8 Won't Install using DD0203 DVD/CD Drive
by Rick Bilonick
I had reported problems with installing Fedora 8 on an Athlon 64-bit
system. The install DVD would start but then couldn't access the DVD
(couldn't seem to find the DVD drive even though the system booted from
the install disk - would ask what type of device had the images and/or
wanted to install a driver disk).
I changed the DVD drive to an older DVD/CD burner drive and the
installation works just fine. The drive that wouldn't work is labeled as
a DD0203 DVD+/-RW. There is no brand name. I did a search and found it
on:
http://www.iomagic.com/Firmware/FirmwareDownload.html
The front panel matches the picture exactly. There is Windows software
to download to check the drive info and DOS or Windows software to flash
the drive (which requires using a floppy drive - not sure if this would
work in wine).
So the problem with the drive could be that it needs new firmware. Or it
could be something else. Not sure how this drive differs from the older
DVD drive that works.

Max is right, you have a DNS issue - you can fix this by manually
updating the contents of you /etc/resolv.conf file. You will have to
be root or able to use sudo to modify this file.
So the question is how do get the correct settings: If you have a
router, the you can get the settings from that. Just go to your
routers configuration web page (or whatever software allows you to
change router configuration), and find the primary and secondary DNS
addresses - should be in the wan config.
Add these to your /etc/resolv.conf file. Add "nameserver " without
quotes before each one.
Another method - If you have a windows pc attached to your
network/router/whatever and it is using DHCP, just type the following
at a dos prompt/command window:
ipconfig /all
Grab the lines (yours will be different):
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.100
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 205.171.3.65
205.171.2.65
>From the information above, /etc/resolv.conf would be:
nameserver 192.168.1.1
nameserver 205.171.3.65
nameserver 205.171.2.65
It is possible that all you need is the first entry, and your router
will resolve your URL's into IP's.
Last solution: If all else fails, set your server back to DHCP, reboot
or restart /etc/init.d/network - now copy /etc/resolv.conf to
something like /etc/resolv.dhcp. Verify that you can ping -c3
www.yahoo.com for instance first. Then go back and set the static IP
up, and copy /etc/resolv.dhcp to /tec/resolv.conf. (Must be root to
use the cp command in the /etc directory). Either reboot or run
/etc/init.d/network restart as root or sudo (if it is setup).
Good Luck!

Question: editing mpeg and avi-files.
by Stefan Kuhlemann
Hello mailinglist.
A few month back I bought an USB DVB TV receiver for my system. Since it
works with linux really very well, I have now about 25 recorded
mpeg/avi-movies on my harddisk.
The only trouble is the annoying tv-advertisement within these files.
Because of this I am looking for an video-editing-program, to cut out
those pesky ads.
Any hint, which program I should use for my fedora-box?
Thank you..

Too new readline on FC8
by Peter J. Stieber
Somehow I managed to load readline-5.2-9.fc8.x86_64 on my Fedora 8 box.
It seems to be newer than any version currently available from the
standard mirrors (readline-5.2-7.fc8). I only point to standard
mirrors. Maybe this newer version was temporarily made available, then
removed.
This is probably a stupid question, but how do I replace the *-9 version
with the -7 version using yum?
Is it...
yum install [some kind of force option] readline-5.2-7.fc8
Thanks,
Pete

X Server crashing
by Da Rock
Fortunately I have solved my gdm problem (2 weeks too late), but now I have a problem with my X, not my ex (pardon the humor, I'm in a funny mood :P).
I would like to solve this myself, but I have several windows open including firefox, and when I minimise firefox it dies and tries to restart but ends up being a blank screen- I can't even cross to a tty console. Funny thing is that I have a similar problem when I switch X consoles at times.
My setup is this (hence the strange looks you'd having reading the last sentence): I have the standard tty consoles, and 3 X consoles for users (I have several users using the machine, so this way they don't have to log out and can simply switch users by tapping a few keys. I set it up under FreeBSD and was very happy with the effects- Ubuntu couldn't handle it), and one X console now for remote login to other machines. All works quite happily, except now I have a problem with user switching via the ctl-alt-F* - If say I am logged in, and another user wishes to use the computer so keys are pressed, my screen is locked and they login on another console, when I come back my login may have lost it, and when I try to return to the other users login or another X console I just get black screen- I can't even get to a tty.
I also have some applets which when I change preferences won't save these, so I have to set them each time I login.
What I would like to know here is how I can get some logging, messages, debug, whatever so I can work out whats happening here. I looked under /varlog/ and checked out both gdm and xorg logs and didn't find anything useful. I then moved on to every other log but still nothing. Is this a setting I need to adjust so that this stuff is logged? Or is it automatic? Or is it just hiding?
Cheers
