Too new readline on FC8
by Peter J. Stieber
Somehow I managed to load readline-5.2-9.fc8.x86_64 on my Fedora 8 box.
It seems to be newer than any version currently available from the
standard mirrors (readline-5.2-7.fc8). I only point to standard
mirrors. Maybe this newer version was temporarily made available, then
removed.
This is probably a stupid question, but how do I replace the *-9 version
with the -7 version using yum?
Is it...
yum install [some kind of force option] readline-5.2-7.fc8
Thanks,
Pete

X Server crashing
by Da Rock
Fortunately I have solved my gdm problem (2 weeks too late), but now I have a problem with my X, not my ex (pardon the humor, I'm in a funny mood :P).
I would like to solve this myself, but I have several windows open including firefox, and when I minimise firefox it dies and tries to restart but ends up being a blank screen- I can't even cross to a tty console. Funny thing is that I have a similar problem when I switch X consoles at times.
My setup is this (hence the strange looks you'd having reading the last sentence): I have the standard tty consoles, and 3 X consoles for users (I have several users using the machine, so this way they don't have to log out and can simply switch users by tapping a few keys. I set it up under FreeBSD and was very happy with the effects- Ubuntu couldn't handle it), and one X console now for remote login to other machines. All works quite happily, except now I have a problem with user switching via the ctl-alt-F* - If say I am logged in, and another user wishes to use the computer so keys are pressed, my screen is locked and they login on another console, when I come back my login may have lost it, and when I try to return to the other users login or another X console I just get black screen- I can't even get to a tty.
I also have some applets which when I change preferences won't save these, so I have to set them each time I login.
What I would like to know here is how I can get some logging, messages, debug, whatever so I can work out whats happening here. I looked under /varlog/ and checked out both gdm and xorg logs and didn't find anything useful. I then moved on to every other log but still nothing. Is this a setting I need to adjust so that this stuff is logged? Or is it automatic? Or is it just hiding?
Cheers

Xdmxp login to remote machine via gdm
by Da Rock
Guys, I know that the current version of gdm on fedora has a serious lack of support for remote xdmcp login, but I need a workaround! I want to login from a crappy machine using XP to relieve a bottleneck of systems using VMWare and a fc8 appliance. (Upon repair under warranty this mc will be scrapped and loaded with FC8 native as all my other mc's- bloody windows!)
As far as I understand the new gdm 2.2.2.1 offers some relief. So is there a rpm for this or hasn't it been looked into yet? If not then, if I install from source how do I make an rpm?
Cheers

yum update dependancy error
by Kevin Kempter
Hi List;
I get the below error trying to run yum update. I suspect I need to remove
xine-lib-extras-nonfree and the re-add it myself after the update. Does this
sound like a proper plan?
Thanks in advance...

Fedora 8 and samba - am I missing something?
by Valent Turkovic
Hi,
I have some about samba client issues I found in Fedora 8. I'm not a
real admin so I'm probably doing something wrong, but here
is my experience.
I setup samba mount points in /etc/fstab and if I enable netfs service
to start in runlevel 3 that it fails becase network is up only when
you log in and gnome starts NetworkManager. There are ways of putting
scripts in NetworkDispatch (but selinux first needs to be disabled
because it prevents those scripts from running) folder so that when
NEtworkManager starts netfs service starts and mounts samba shares but
this fails on shutdown becasuse network goes down before samba shares
are unmounted.
This is a laptop and I need NetworkManager because of it's wireless
magic so turning it off is not an option.
Is there some way of using samba shares with NetworkManager that you know about?
Cheers,
Valent.

lvm re-install strategy
by François Patte
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
Bonsoir,
I have an fc6 install with LVM and want install f8.
I have 3 hdd: sda, sdb, sdc.
sda has 1 partition: sda1 LVM
sdb has 2 partitions: sdb1 ext3
sdb2 LVM
sdc has 1 partition: sdc1 LVM
sdc1 and sdb2 are in the same volume group.
System in living in sdb and sdc and sda is practically free.
The root partition / is on sdb1 and all other vital partitions (/usr,
swap, /var, /opt, /tmp and /home) are logical volumes on sdc1.
My idea is to perform the new install on sda: sda1 will be the root
partition /, and build a volume group sda2 for /usr, swap, /opt /tmp and
/var; /home will be left where it is.
Here begins my problem: I would like, after install retrieve (almost)
all files from fc6 install. For /home, there is no problem, I think
that, at install time, I will be be asked if I want to keep my /home
volume wherever it is. But for other volumes (/var where my dns config
is...) or /opt (where my texmf and some other out of standard are) I
don't know how to get them once the new system will be installed.
How could I access to these partitions for, now, they are mounted on
/dev/mapper/.... but these devices are created at boot time in the /dev
which is on sdb1 and, even if I mount /dev/sdb1 from the fresh install,
I will be unable to access them because the new system is mounted on
sda.....
I don't know how to proceed.... If someone could give me some lights, I
will be happy.
Another (related) question: is it possible, through grub, to have the 2
systems (f8 and fc6) working? I mean, not at the same time but possibly
choosen at boot time? what are the magic command to give before
installing the bootloader, during the installation of f8, in order to
get this possibility.
Thanks for any answer.

Having a valid point is no excuse for not presenting it in a respectful
manner. If you believe something needs to be fixed, please let us know
what it is.
We love constructive criticism! Really, we do. It's one of the very
_foundations_ of F/OSS development. Please let us know what you feel is
wrong, and how perhaps we could fix it. However, if you simply tell us
"this is wrong. you people suck" (which is effectively what your wording
in earlier mails is doing), then we can do nothing about it.
Instead, choose your wording in a less inflammatory way. For example:
"This foo-thing is wrong. Here's why: insert-reason-here. Perhaps if we
did bar-action it could be fixed."

Heh. =P

add and remove program
by arunbkn@aol.in
Dear All,
One of my fedora client is behind the squid proxy server. That client could not able to update the add and remove program. Can anyone help me what to configure at squid / firewall, so that client could update the softwares. Also tell me how secure it is to allow clients to update, is that going to create hole in the security wall.
thanks
Arun

Speaking one's mind, and doing so *politely*, are two different things.
Simply having a good disposition does not imply being docile or servile.

Oh, quite the contrary! I'm almost certain (at least, certainly hopeful)
that our community is mature enough that we would not tolerate such
belligerence, irregardless of who or what your targets may be.
Rudeness for any reason is still rude and uncalled-for.
You may very well be an extremely intelligent person; but so far you
have demonstrated only the opposite to us in your communication:
aggressive and childish wording, excessive slang/colloquialism usage,
and fallacious ad-hominem attacks. (Not to mention what seems to be a
lack of any effort to use your mailer's spell-check feature before
sending. :P)
