SATA - System Freezes
by Jorge Fábregas
Hello Everyone,
I'm running Fedora 8 and my system freezes (for about 20 to 40 seconds) a
couple of times a day. When it does I see this on /var/log/messages:
------------------------------- cut here -------------------------------------
kernel: ata3.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x2 frozen
kernel: ata3.00: cmd ca/00:50:67:85:03/00:00:00:00:00/e0 tag 0 dma 40960 out

kernel: ata3.00: status: { DRDY }
kernel: ata3: port is slow to respond, please be patient (Status 0xd0)

kernel: sd 2:0:0:0: [sdc] Write cache: enabled, read cache: enabled, doesn't

------------------------------- cut here -------------------------------------
/dev/sdc is my main drive. The only thing I can think of...is that this drive
is actually a PATA drive connected to the SATA controller on MoBo thru
a "SATA-TO-IDE Adapter" that I connect on the drive. Perhaps the converter is
faulty...or could this be a known issue with libata? Anyone had same
problem?
Thanks,
Jorge

Where are they hiding the source files now??
by Bill Case
Hi;
Where do I get the Fedora 9 SRPMs? I have an old URL and I can't seem
to find a clear link from the Wiki.

compiz-fusion-gnome?
by Tom Horsley
Just idle curiosity while waiting for yum...
Anyone know why installing the latest compiz-fusion-gnome update
is spending what seems like hours running gconftool-2?
(This is what comes of trying to copy every bad idea from Windows :-).

Also without something cpu intensive running the cpu temp may not mean anything, if you do get something cpu intensive to run, that may cause it to fall over fairly quickly. remote app -- local data
by Frank Cox
I need to run a program on a computer that I normally access through a tunneled
VNC desktop over SSH. I want to have that remote program save its data on my
local hard drive.
For example, if my remote program was Firefox, I would want anything that I
downloaded to be saved into my local directory, not into a directory on the
remote computer where Firefox is actually running.
Is there a way to achieve this? On a somewhat related note, is there a way to
tell VNC not to load a full desktop, but but just to run one single program?
ssh -X is too slow over this link.

ssh tunnel problems
by Rick Bilonick
I'm using Fedora 8 on a server behind a firewall (with incoming ssh
blocked) and my computer at home.
I did the following on the server:
> ssh -R 5000:localhost:22 me@home
which connected to my home computer after I entered the password. (I
could list files, etc.) I also set up /etc/ssh/sshd_config on the server
to keep the connection open.
At home I entered (using the password for user=server on the server):
> ssh server@localhost -p 5000
ssh: connect to host localhost port 5000: Connection refused
I've tried adding:
sshd : ALL : allow
portmap : ALL : allow
to /etc/hosts.allow but still get the same message. I have no idea why
I'm not able to connect to the server through the ssh connection. I can
ssh out from the home computer to other servers with port 22 not
blocked.

rsh issue/update (access denied)...
by bruce
hi...
i've got an "access denied" issue with rsh on one of my boxes (and before we
start, no "use ssh" comments.. rsh is what i'm dealing with for now!!)
i've got a few boxes in my network, and i can successfully rsh into them
with no issue. however, on one box, i can't access it using rsh, and i'm
running out of things to try... kind of curious.
i can login using rlogin.
i've modifed the /etc/pam.d/rsh,rlogin files, along with the /etc/securetty
file. i've also changed the /etc/xinetd.d/(rsh,rlogin)files. as far as i can
tell, nothing else has been changed...
the curious thing. as far as i can tell... the files on the system that
doesn't work, are the same as the files on the systems that are allowing rsh
to occur...
the err i'm getting in the /var/log/secure is:

i've been searching across the net for the last day or so, so i suspect that
the solution is staring at me and i'm missing it!
is there a way to debug this from the server side? is there a way to turn
off authentication.. Is there a way to turn off/disable securetty...
so... any thoughts/comments/things to check would be greatly appreciated....
thanks

CPU temp problem intel 440ZX after update of Fedora 9
by potat0
Hi there
Installed fedora 9. All was well. CPU temp sensor was giving an accurate reading, fan was working etc.
Updated the system and now the CPU temp is set to 50C with no deviation.
Tried booting with the original kernel with no change.
Ran sensors-detect and detected no sensors.
/proc/acpi is populated with the required data except for the fact the cpu temp is reported as 50C with no change ever. This motherboard and processor is supported by lm_sensors for some time now. ACPId is running.
Does anybody have any ideas as to which package i should downgrade to get things working again?
