Samba and Nautilus
by KC8LDO
I've notice that when trying to run Samba from a user account remotely I
don't get the expected login as root request dialog box pop-up. Other
services, that I've tried so far, that require root however do. This is on a
Fedora 10 system. For right now I just changed the menu entry to start the
app in a terminal window using the old su -c "app" trick as a work around.
On another unrelated item. On older versions of Fedora I was always able to
open a terminal window, su to root and then start Nautilus. Nautilus then
runs with root privileges allowing me to move files around and do some other
system tasks without having to screw around with command line utilities. Now
on Fedora 10 Nautilus starts and runs but does not inherit root privileges
when started as root. This is rather annoying behavior and unexpected based
on previous experiences with older versions of the distro.
Other items are several system tasks that pop up a window saying they are
not running from the local console and doing so is assumed to be an error
then clicking the widows clears it and then nothing. I'm running a headless
box, no keyboard - mouse - display. All my access is through VNC on my local
network or tunneled through ssh when I'm away from home. This behavior is
also very annoying too. Assuming you have to be at the console to do some
tasks using the GUI interface ignores people like me who run and administer
there system completely on a remote connection. I don't want to be forced to
use console access.
I would like to suggest that this behavior be changed on future versions. Or
at the very least the configuration can be easily tweaked to allow it after
installation.
Flame proof suit is now on.

F10 and F11 How to set the logon screen resolution ?
by Leslie S Satenstein
For root and users, each was able to set the preferred video resolution etc.
What controls the logon screen resolution? I use Gnome and chose a logon screen selection from the supplied list. The system only has 4 users plus root.
The screen is right shifted, by the amount of 2 fingers (5.5 cm, or 1 inch), for the logon presentation.

Re: size from df -kh vs size from fdisk -lf

After using fdisk or parted, one must do "partprobe" at the CLI to record
the changes. Both the OS and the Kernel need to know the changes.
Since your boot partition is involved, you may need a LiveCD for this.
Do "man partprobe" for more info.
HTH,
~af
-----------------------
but "I" didnt "consciously" use fdisk or parted on sda.
If it happened bc of my clutzy use of the liveinstall cd
then maybe I did, without knowing it.
Actually my present boot partition is sdb6, /boot a dir inside,
so present /boot not involved with my installcd mistakes on sda1.
I have systemrescue cd so i probably can use that.
I have never heard of partprobe
is it really necessary if reboot after using fdisk, parted, gparted
if reboot after?
I am unclear re man page
partprobe - inform the OS of partition table changes
partprobe [-d] [-s] [devices...]
partprobe is a program that informs the operating system kernel of
parti-
tion table changes, by requesting that the operating system re-read
the
partition table.
OPTIONS
-d Don’t update the kernel.
-s Show a summary of devices and their partitions.
what exactly does -d do?
-s do nothing except show summary ?
are you saying to run it
as partprobe /dev/sda1
or partprobe /dev/sda ?
will this operation shrink the size seen by fdisk to what is seen by df?
or what?
will it affect
sda2 swap
sda3 another linux partition
?
parted shows same thing, but additional "incompatible feature"
root@bootp ~]# parted /dev/sda
Using /dev/sda
(parted) unit mb print
Disk geometry for /dev/sda: 0MB - 36704MB
Disk label type: msdos
Number Start End Size Type File system Flags
1 0MB 22011MB 22011MB primary ext3 boot
2 22011MB 26017MB 4006MB primary linux-swap
3 26017MB 36701MB 10685MB primary ext3
(parted) check 1
Warning: Partition 1 is 22011MB, but the file system is 206MB.
Ignore/Cancel? ignore
Error: File system has an incompatible feature enabled.
does this last tell us anything useful?
perhaps better to just reformat sda1?
thanks for response

No sound on Fedora 10 XFCE
by Erick Martínez
Hello! can anybody bring me some help, pls? No problem with Gnome (sound is ok), but I'm trying to test Fedora 10 XFCE. The problem is that I can't make the sound work. My Thinkpad is mute!!! Pulseaudio is active in the autostarted scripts/applications section. When I open the Volume control, after half a second, a popup window appears over the volume window, and it says Connection failed: Connection terminated, then closes with no more hints. Can anybody help me? (sound chip is ESS ES1938 Solo 1). Thanks in advance!

xorg-x11-drv-nv.x86_64 / openoffice hang
by Gary Artim
Hi --
I have a system that is getting full and partial freezes running
fc10/nv (driver)/openoffice.
The bug sometimes freezes the X session, other times hangs openoffice
and some of the menuing in kde 4.
Anyone experiencing this? Below is both my lspci and the X output from
Openoffice. This started occuring in fc9
and has not improved with fc10.
Thanks for any advice!
