Fedora 11 upgrade, sound solved
by Ted Roche
Everyone's piling on with problem reports; thought I'd add my experience.
I did an upgrade-in-place, running preupgrade, from an up-to-date
Fedora 10. Most of the install went smoothly, but sound was not
working once I restarted. I tried the old saw of "yum erase
pulseaudio" that did NOT fix the problem. I relented an reinstalled
pulseaudio. Poking around pulseaudio monitor, I could see that audio
was being produced, just not making out the speakers. A morning of
Googling and poking around finally yielded this page:
http://fedorasolved.org/Members/fenris02/pulseaudio-fixes-and-workarounds
My solution was in step #4: installing gst-mixer and finding the PCM
setting at zero. Pushed it to 100% and sound works.
Someone who understands how all the parts interact could do the Fedora
Community a great service by writing up a troubleshooting guide.

Weird sound issues after updating to F11
by Niels Weber
After updating from F10 to F11, I have some weird issues with sound.
The funny thing is that generally the sound works, only some specific
programs have problems. Those problems can best be described as loud
noise that happens in the middle of the played music of some programs.
Affected are for example:
Supertux
Supertuxcart
Warzone2100
UT2004
Not affected are:
Rhythmbox
MPlayer
Vultures Claw
World of Goo
Prey
So it is not only Closed Source that is affected but also Open Source
games that came with F11.
Is there anything I can do? I'm not sure how to bugzilla those issues,
so I haven't yet.
As an aside, I have not managed to get sound in Wolfenstein:Enemy
Territory to work in F10 or F11. Any ideas?

will we ever have radeon drivers that aren't crap?
by Robert P. J. Day
apologies for the unduly harsh tone but, seriously, will there ever
be radeon drivers available for fedora that aren't complete junk?
this has been going on for some time now, and nothing's changed.
currently, on my 1280x800 display gateway laptop, i need to run the
vesa driver and get only 1024x768 because, if i try to run the radeon
driver, i'll get my full resolution, and my session will last maybe
10-15 minutes before finally locking up, at which point the only
response i can get is moving the mouse around the screen verrrrrry
slowly but nothing else, requiring a power cycle. (the vesa driver
will, of course, work perfectly for days on end.)
it's been like this since early in the f11 test cycle, and it
depresses me to think i'll still be fighting with this when the first
cut of f12 comes out.
what's the story on video drivers these days? and why are they such
unmitigated trash?

In the Section "Monitor" of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file,
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Card0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 1
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 4
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 8
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 15
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 16
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 24
EndSubSection
EndSection
Change it to add a section
Modes "1920x1080"
like the following:
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Card0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 1
Modes "1920x1080"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 4
Modes "1920x1080"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 8
Modes "1920x1080"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 15
Modes "1920x1080"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 16
Modes "1920x1080"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 24
Modes "1920x1080"
EndSubSection
EndSection
Please try that out and report back with success or failure. Then if it works, you may add more values like
Modes "1929x1080" "1280x960" "1024x768" "800x600", etc

Low X11 resolution with samsung monitor
by Stuart McGraw
Hello all,
I have just installed Fedora 11 on my new computer with
Intel Q33 graphics and could use some help.
When I boot Fedora with my old Samsung 950p CRT
monitor plugged in, the X11 resolution is something
reasonably high (at least 1024x760 I think). But when
I boot it with my new Samsung 2333SW LCD monitor,
X runs at 800x600 resolution with no higher resolutions
available the Gnome "Display" applet..
Per some Google results I tried doing "Xorg -configure :1"
after booting with each monitor but the resulting xorg.conf.new
file are identical. However, when I use that file (which
has a basically empty Monitor section), I now get 1024x
768. But I still can't figure out how to get 1280x1024
or best, 1920x1080.
Any idea how I create a xorg.conf file that will display
at my lcd monitor's native 1920x1080 resolution or any-
thing better than 1024x768?

LMV2 boot from another Volume Group?
by Tony Nelson
I have two hard drives I want to boot from, each with its own LVM2
Volume Group. I can boot from the one on the same drive as Grub, but
not from the other one. Apparantly, only Logical Volumes from the boot
drive's Volume Group are detected before / is mounted (something about
"activation", perhaps?). Googling only shows how to detect Volume
Groups and activate Logical Volumes after / is mounted. I can't find
any kernel LVM parameters that would affect this (and I'd need the LVM
stuff built-in to the kernel, not as a module).
Can Linux use a Volume Group that isn't on Grub's boot volume?
Must I add a boot partition on the second disk and chainload to it?

More information regarding GRUB splash screen image characteristics:
Maximum size is 640x480 pixels. Maximum number of colors is 14.
That makes sense since the lowest common denominator (mode) for video
adapters is VGA.

Upcoming IRC Classroom Sessions - 2009-07-27
by Kevin Fenzi
Greetings.
This is a regular posting I am going to try and make every monday,
letting people know about the upcoming IRC classroom sessions that are

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Classroom
we currently have the following Classes scheduled:
2009-07-29 01:00 UTC A tour of the Xfce desktop -- Kevin Fenzi
2009-08-05 01:00 UTC An intro to rsync -- Jon Stanley
Last week I ran a Class on using preupgrade. You can find the
log/summary of that Class at:
http://meetbot.fedoraproject.org/fedora-classroom/2009-07-21/fedora-class...
We have several other classes in planning stages now, hopefully to be
announced soon.
Please see the above page for more information on signing up to teach a
class, providing feedback to the classroom mailing list or other
general information.
Hope to see you all there!

flash problems with Fedora 11 23-bit
by Hugh Caley
So, solved about half my problems with Flash by adding an old CMedia
audio card
> Multimedia audio controller: C-Media Electronics Inc CM8738 (rev 10)
and not using the built-in SiS audio controller:
> Multimedia audio controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] AC'97
> Sound Controller (rev a0)
Completely fixes my stuttering audio problem and now I can play videos
using the flash plugin, at least for a while.
Now, usually, an embedded youtube video will play just after I restart
the browser. The main problem is that, after a while, firefox will peg
my cpu even if no video is playing, and sometimes the videos will play
only (and poorly) while I'm wiggling the mouse on top of them.
I am using the proprietary driver for my nvidia 6200 card.
Any ideas of other things to try? I currently have "Desktop Effects"
(Compiz) turned on, but turning it off makes little difference. I'm
using Firefox 3.5, but 3.0 seems about the same in terms of Flash problems.
