syslog daemon facilty
by Maurizio Marini
One of the first thing u note coming from debian, is that tailing for
daemon doesn't tail anything :)
I wonder why redhat never used /var/log/daemon.log ad syslog daemon
facility; this is not an issue of course, i add it, this is only an historical
question :)

An elementary question on LANs
by Timothy Murphy
What exactly sets up the correspondence between interfaces and LANs,
eg (in my case) eth1 <-> 192.168.2.0 ?
I don't see any file in /etc/sysconfig , say,
where this is specified.

Re: Gnome 3 ~ Windows 8?

> You mean something like the Sixth Sense technology?
And there I thought I was thought of as living in LaLaLand and imagining
impossible things, and the destruction of western society. Turns out,
someone's already built it. :D
Whenever trying to set up a computer (device), I'm convinced that someone
else has already tried what I want to do - it's just a matter of finding a
report of it... :) This proves it to the extreme.

Re: Gnome 3 ~ Windows 8?
by Roelof 'Ben' Kusters
While agreeing with your rant in many ways, I would like to strike a
slightly different note; it is the destruction of the status quo of
western society. Absolutely. But that is nothing but change. Change always
hurts - sometimes many, sometimes a few. But change is also always
necessary; without it there's no possibility for survival. And you can
rant at it, and yell and scream how bad it is, or try to steer it, and
come up with ways of change that would - on your humble opinion - be
beneficial. Change is gonna happen. And it's gonna destroy the status quo.
If you ask me, it's very urgent that that happens, because - next to a
whole new - perhaps Matrix like - approach to social interaction, it will
make room for other technologies too.
Just one question I want to really comment on:
> What about the privacy of those "clouds" ?
Privacy has been dead since the (in)famous 9/11. Anyone with any influence
anywhere in the world can know just about anything about you at the
moment. Particularly if you happen to have either a facebook-related or
Google-related account. And I know very few people who have neither.

Application names -
by Bob Goodwin
I checked to make certain the HP scanner would work with F-15.
It works as expected once xsane is installed. I looked in the
menu and couldn't find xsane, not that it matters, I have always
started it from the command line out of habit.
It took me a few seconds to try "Scanner Tool" which brings up
xsane. I would prefer to change such listings to the true
application names that I recognize, in this case xsane rather
than Scanner Tool. Is there a file I can fix that in?

Gnome 3 ~ Windows 8?
by Mike Chambers
Started a new thread for the user, as looks like stole another thread
and changed the subject. Anyway, here is the original post and can
comment on it from there if you like.
Don't flame ME, I care less bout the subject, just trying to help get
someone going in right direction.

Without intending a flamewar (after all, we have to move forward,
wherever that means), the linked article[1] is not interesting or unique
in its blatant criticism of the Windows 8 interface, but it is
interesting that the author sees the Windows 8 interface as a chance for
Linux to get the upper hand on the desktop:
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2386343,00.asp?obref=obinsite
Is he right and we're moving badly in the wrong direction (as in, an
interface with a more traditional GUI feel would be a big winner?) or is
competing with a similar look-and-feel as the default while providing
lots of traditional-feeling alternatives a winning attitude?
I haven't found any debate written anywhere public about a deliberate
decision to try to "out-Windows8 Windows8" as far as interface is
concerned, but it seems this is what Gnome 3 is aimed at.
Now that F15 has had a few weeks of heavy use, and people have either
adapted to the new interface or adopted a permanently frustrated
attitude toward it, I'm curious the general feeling. (Sorry, my English
is giving out -- I think this last sentence may be weird.)

Question about the boost package in Fedora
by Suvayu Ali
Hi,
I see that a few of the examples are missing from the boost package
available in the official Fedora repositories. Do I need to install
any package to get these? e.g. I could not find the first.cpp example
from program_options. The docs say they should be under
libs/program_options/example.
Any ideas?
PS: I also found the boost-doc package is missing the boost graphic
and the style sheets for the pages.

Software update has bugs
by Aaron Konstam
Under KDM I asked for software updates and got an option called Get and
Remove Software. I ran it and chose to add the Content group. I was
shown the three documents I could add. One on Python, one on Java and
one on Linux drivers. I chose to install the first and third. Processing
started until I was told another dependency must be installed. I said
continue and the system asked me for a passwd authorization. I entered
the only passwds that seemed possibly relevant and both were rejected
Ok, I started again . At the place where it asked me for a passwd
previously it stated that I had not entered an authorizing passwd and
quit. So I could not proceed further.
I tried to use Gnome to do the same thing. When I searched for Get or
Remove .. the only relevant application I was shown was KPackageKit.
When I ran that I was given the option to Get and Remove Software, which
I ran, entered the passwd which should work and it did.
Now I pressed my luck and ran another option called Software Update.
Which attempted it said to find updates but failed. The same option
under KVM also failed.
However, in Gnome under Software Tools the Software Update application
succeeds.
Have other people fond the same bug or am I going crazy again?

How do I point a mail client at Microsoft outlook?
by Michael Hennebry
For work, I have had to use Microsoft outlook for e-mail.
I'd like to be able to get at it through either
KMail or evolution on my home F13 machine.
I've tried to set up both without success.
That I've never used a mail client before probably doesn't help.
With KMail I'm stuck when I get to
Server Innformation
Incoming server:
Outgoing server:
Use local delivery
With evolution, I'm stuck when I get to the "Receiving Email" page.
For server, I'm completely stuck.
Which username?
My name on my box or the username part of my e-mail address?

I do get window that ask for password, and I enter password, then a second
window appears "Unable to authenticate to SMTP server.
Bad authentication response from server"
I am sending this email from the same computer using Kmail, however, I would
like to go back to Evolution if it can be fixed.
